OK, having seen the Departed recently, I have a question about it:
What was Colin Sullivan's role in the Departed?
Its' clear from the film that Leo Dicaprio was a clear good guy, and Jack Nicholson is the nominal bad guy, but how would you summise Matt Damons character?
Antagonist - he was trying to hunt down the most moral charcter, or anyway, the main charcter in the story and have him killed. He was in league with the main bad guy and had his sights on ambitious goals. He killed Jack (in self defense perhaps) and cold bloodedly murder the fellow mole. If it hadn't been for Sullivan, Costigan would have made it out alive.
Co-Protagonist - On the other hand he had far less participation in criminal acts than Costigan, it being limited to phonecalls with Costello (albeit to abuse his police powers). He was ultimately in the exact same situation as Costigan, but whereas Costigan was staring into the abyss, he was trying to get out of it - "when you're facing a loaded gun, what's the difference?". He did as many decitful things as Costgan, just to "better" people (the cops).
Victim - He ultimately could be seen as a Faustian charcter who did a deal (symbolised by the shopping bag) with Costello years ago and had it looming over all his plans (getting into law, starting a new life). And his evil acts (the death of Queenan, the death of Costigan) were all the result of his plans (having queenan followed, atttempting to bargain with-he didn't set off to kill-Costigan) BY the end he had given up all hope and let himself die
So what do you think?
