Comedy Detective Pikachu Sequel | Warner Bros.

Yeah I agree. Perhaps they’re just going to change tracks eg: not focusing on detective pikachu but staying in universe with the planned red and blue movie instead. So kind of a reboot but not really

It was maybe a decade or two too late.
The special effects wouldn't have done the film justice 20yrs ago though, so it would've likely failed back then through a different result.

Is there any news on this? I remember reading about them some time ago.

As much as I enjoyed Detective Pikachu, I do think a story following an original character similar to the games should be where the films (or a live action tv series) should go, with each film (or season) focusing on a new/different region; similar to the anime, just more adult, and more focused. A tv series could easily open up the world for spinoffs too with different characters or stories.

I sometimes wonder whether the Pokemon Company are a little stuck in their ways similar to Games Workshop; there's no reason these two shouldn't have a string of big budget films out by now.

A live-action 1998 Pikachu would've been glorious!

I figured it would be hard as they would have to find a reason to get Reynolds back into pikachus body and then Reynolds is quite busy not to mention his paycheck.

Oh well I liked the movie and there was some great potential. Who knows if the Red/Blue movie happens maybe Justice Smith gets to drop in to investigate Team Rocket.

I was surprised that there were no plans for a sequel because I could have sworn it made twice as much globally than it actually did but it tapped out at $433 million, which is unfortunately on the low end for a massive franchise like Pokémon. It was also released in one of the most crowded blockbuster months in recent memory and Endgame still had a stranglehold on the box office.

Early 2000s CGI wouldn't have done justice to this film. Also, Nintendo would have been more hesitant back then due to the Super Mario Bros film still being fresh in their minds.

They could have pulled off a live action Pokemon in the early to mid '00s. Some of the CGI back then was so good that it still holds up today (Gollum and Davy Jones come to mind).

Movies based on games just seem to be Hollywood's Achilles heel.

The funny thing is with the right team, a Nintendo film franchise similar to the MCU that includes Mario, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, etc. that culminates in a Smash Bros. crossover? That's a billion dollar franchise they've got on their hands. Only thing is that some of them would be better off animated than others. We don't need to see another live action Mario, but Zelda and Metroid in live action would make more sense.

I think that’s slowly starting to turn around though. Like I could see lots of people not seeing detective pikachu because video game movies are often dodgy but due to cgi advancements they’re starting to build on something.

it’s also hard to get decent actors to agree to do a video game movie since no one wants to end up on the c list when it flops

Well this is a welcome surprise

DETECTIVE PIKACHU Still In "Active Development" Despite Seemingly Having No Creative Team Attached

That's not exactly a good sign though.

Also, the story in the first film was basically completed so how the heck would they turn Ryan Reynold's character back into a Pikachu in a way that wouldn't feel extremely contrived? I can't think of any good way to do it.

I literally squealed in excitement at this only to see it's still not officially announced.

At least they’re interested. Last I heard it was dead as a dodo

...again, how the heck are they gonna turn Ryan Reynolds back into a Pikachu in a way that doesn't feel extremely contrived in a "here we go again" sort of way?

Really wish we'd just gotten a full-on adaptation of Pokémon but they don't want to do that for god knows what reason.

Huh, so it actually is moving forward.

I feel like the short answer is they'll just embrace "extremely contrived" with a literal wink and nod to the camera an a "here we go again"

Oh yay this is great news! I’m glad it’s not dead in the water

Acknowledging a flaw doesn't stop it from being a flaw, but whatever I guess lol

Maybe they'll jump on the multiverse train and have Arceus bring forth a Reynolds Pikachu variant. :o

Maybe this time it will just be Ryan Reynolds' character with a Pikachu helping him.
