Diamond List for June 20, 2007

If it's Kang(or anyone else for that matter), how I could see it going down is that Annihilus comes back in the end of the story and takes him down, and re-establishes himself. Then he officially becomes Nova's arch-enemy in his on-going series. I at least want that last part to happen, since Nova does need to have that one arch-enemy.

Countdown #45
Shadowpact #14
Incredible Hulk #107
Iron Man #19 (two issues of IM this month? Awesome)
Moon Knight #11
Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four #3

I think the smart thing to do is not have Annihilus show up again at all in this event. It's too soon.

I wouldn't argue with that. At the very least have him show up down the road in the Nova series. That would certainly suffice.

HMmmm....Slow Week.

I agree that it is too soon for Annihilus to be the big bad of CONQUEST. Him emerging some time down the road in NOVA when the book has to stand on it's own without a crossover tie-in, that could work. Especially as Nova has very few enemies and those he does have, he's way stronger than now, like Diamondhead.

As for Kang, he's a major Avengers threat but aside for a great turn in the first arc of YA hasn't done a lot. Guess that comes from being offed and then Iron Lad having to "become" him. I get the feeling they are keeping Kang on the shelf for the second volume of YA, although Marvel has recently realized just how unlikely a Heinberg return is in resulting published issues, so they are weighing options.

Kang needs a redesign, the trick is to have it be in a way that evolves it without going overboard. Thanos' redesign in ANNIHILATION is a good example of one done well.

Of course, then you have Kang's time travelling, seperate alter ego's Immortus and Rama-Tut, and then it gets confusing.

No it doesnt.

I never cared for it. Time travelling alone is a genre, which I have said elsewhere, that is usually very confusing. In the case of villains, one wonders how they ever lose. The premise for Kang was that he fights the Avengers in the past for "sport", but he loses so it comes off sometimes as having some sort of masochist fetish. Then you have two other identities. Kang is the one from the far future, Immortus from the far FAR future, and Rama Tut from the future in the past. And they all can interact and have opposing plans. It can get wiggy for me. But time travelling is sort of a personal peeve. I know others love it.

I'm all for a workable Kang coming back, though.

Kang's time line is pretty simple if you read Avengers Forever. First he was Rama Tut, then the FF kicked his ass and he went back to the future, along the way he met Doom, and got an idea to remake himself more in the image of his possible ancestor. When he got back, he missed his time by a couple of centuries, and found himself in a world where humanity had been defeated by an alien race and was nothing more than a scattered, unorganized people. So, he became Kang, and saved humanity, then pushed forward and conquered a thousand, thousand worlds. After that, he got kinda complacent. Decided to test his metal against the age of heroes, and so began his many battles with the Avengers. Kang may be a bad guy, but he is an honorable one. He wont take advantage of his time travel advantage. (As seen in the Kang Dynasty. Best Kang Story ever written. Read it if you never have.) Immortus and Kang are not technically the same person. Kang does not become Immortus. Immortus is a splinter of Kang. At the end of Avengers Forever, the Time Masters tried to age Kang into Immortus, but Kang, through shear force of will, split himself off from Immortus. So Immortus is more of an, aspect of Kangs personality really. Not Kang, so to speak. The Crimson whats his face was an alternate universe version of Kang. He was a Squadron Villain. His son, Marcus had taken over the mantel of Crimson Centurion for a time. But that's no more. At this point, Kang's just kinda looking for an aire. Somebody to carry on his legacy, which possibly lead him to mess with time that last time creating Iron Lad. Who better to carry on your legacy than....you? Heh. It's not that hard, of course I love time travel stories. Never had a hard time understanding them.

Scarlet Centurian was that guy's name, yet another decendant from Kang/Richards/Doom/Maybe whatever.

So, Immortus is like some sliver of Kang that fell off. I always actually thought HIS design was even worse. But the problem with cosmics or time travellers is you can't tell them how lame they look because they can always say something like, "In five thousand years this instills terror" or "My colors clashed before there was color!" for cosmic types.

I still don't like Time Travelling types; Hiro from HEROES right now is the only one, and even he is starting to get on my nerves. There is no excuse about why they lose except for incompetance or some sort of baloney moral code that explains why they always lose. There's no worse motivation than boredom. Dr. Doom has a Time Machine, why hasn't he killed Richards or taken over the world by now? It comes off to me as some plot device to explain where villains get tech or to have horribly tragic origins, but at the same time really gets confusing, especially when you have time-travel creating alternate realities and whatnot.

Surely Kang should have known that plucking an earlier version of himself would screw up the timestream, right?

I could see Kang working as a force from the shadows putting together events in the past to aid himself in the future or something or other. I dunno. Kang is a villain with a lot of great history and stories and battles, but I don't feel he is very accessable and his design needs some tweaks. I dunno what or how, but it has to be possible, and I used some of the Annihilation redesigns as examples (Thanos). Kang definately is a contendor and it would be nice to see him act as one for an actual reason besides boredom or wanting an heir. Like when he wanted to save Ravonna (that was her name, right) but ended up sacrificing her for power and then regretting it, stuff like that. And sure any redesign will not look as bad as the 90's era shoulderpad armor from the 1999 AVENGERS UNITED THEY STAND cartoon. Ugh.

If ANNIHILATION could make Annihilus a heavyweight I could see CONQUEST doing the same for Kang, if they wish to acknowledge that Heinberg is never coming back and either crapping or getting off the pot with him. Kang could be a near unstoppable bad-arse. He's a warrior from various time periods, then maybe his outfit/armor could better incorporate this. Like I imagine when someone sees Kang they should instantly get the feeling he has overcome everything from BC era hardcore warriors to aliens & robots in the future and be mistified, not chuckle at his green silk robe. I don't know. Despite what it may seem like stubborn loathing for time travellers I do believe Kang's a good villain, and acknowledge time travel as part of the many genres that add to the superhero stuff that make it cool.

X-MEN ENDANGERED SPECIES ONE SHOT: The X-Line has officially been replaced by the Avengers line and it is suffering for it by an utter lack of direction.
Well, this is obviously meant to supply direction. I don't imagine anyone at the X-office thinks the current status quo is sustainable (if they do, they're morons, although that wouldn't entirely surprise me either).
