What an arbitrary reason to not buy it. It's got Beast and aliens!
For me, at least, especially for a $4 debut issue, that isn't enough. Again, if this was a $3 comic launch I might be more partisan, but for $4, I have to either have invested interest or have cared about the creative team, and I don't.
Why would Lockheed be the star? Agent Brand is the star.
Beta Ray Bill will probably be in it too.
That's the other reason; I don't like Agent Brand at all. She's essentially "Maria Hill only in space" and is a bit of a cipher. Whedon almost redeemed her at the end of his 25 issue run of AXM with pithy dialogue...but he does that with everything; it's his trademark. You've seen characters like Brand a million times and there is really no way to make her work, since without her cliche niche, there's no reason for her to exist. She really has no personality beyond being an alien and dating Beast, which aren't personality traits, they're plot points.
Lockheed is stupid, and I actually never cared for Beta Ray Bill, which I know is kind of like a crime online. I have nothing against him or anything; he isn't like Brand or Lockheed to me. I just don't like him enough to go out of my way to read about him. It's a cruel world when
and Lockheed gets to live. I'm the opposite of
Spoons, though; I might like him if he talked. Lockheed would then have a chance for an actual personality, instead of just being Kitty's squeak toy.
I'll get a taste of Gillen on THOR when he picks up from JMS, least for an arc. But I don't plan on getting SWORD unless some reviews are just utterly incredible. I don't see the point in yet another X-spin-off at a time when those struggle, trying to make hay out of a story that has been over for almost a year. The time to write about the aftermath of SECRET INVASION was about six months ago, not now. Frankly, Marvel's events have usually overexposed characters and I probably don't want to see a Skrull again for a good decade, much as after SIEGE I will be tired of Osborn (if I am not already) and his Avengers (especially Sentry). Iron Man came VERY CLOSE to that level during CIVIL WAR/INITIATIVE.
I mean the idea of Gyrich taking so long to crack down on aliens after SECRET INVASION is ancient history stretches the credibility of the premise. I like Beast, but not enough to burn $4 at random.
