For me, it did not. It was essentially a remake of Star Wars, a New Hope.

Crash land on a desert planet, hide the plans in a droid, then blow up the death star for the third time. You'd think by now the Empire / New Order would have wised up a bit on how to protect their biggest asset.

Kylo Ren was no Darth Vader. In fact, he was the weakest sith I ever saw. Han Solo was great, and Rey was good, but I felt Han's death was too predictable and did not mean as much as Ben's or Darth Vaders.

The Supreme Leader Snoke was a disappointment.

Yeah-- I liked it but expected more.

Can there be a, "It exceeded expectations" without it being the best Star Wars ever option?

It did meet my expectations, but I went in with low expectations, so don't know if that helps.

I think everyone had differing expectations. Ultimately the only thing that matters is if you liked it or not. I liked it but I had mixed feelings leaving the theater. But I did like it more than RotJ, so it sits at #3 overall in my book.

It exceeded them, but I wouldn't call it the best Star Wars film. Sadly, seeing as you've made that the only option for exceeding, I've had to pick it.

As far as I'm concerned, the majority of issues people point out are explained in the film or self explanatory, or will blatantly be explained over time. My own issues with the film get eased the more I see it, and the more I notice and are simply from my own lack of observation during a showing.

I'm incredibly happy with the film, really enjoying repeat viewings and looking forward to seeing it again this week.

As for the "similarities" people mention - Phantom Menace was exactly the same, and we could apply the same complaints to most film series with either a sequel, or later sequel. I'm not giving it a pass because it's Star Wars, I'm giving it a pass because people seem to believe, or give me the impression they believe, that this is the first time this has happened. And like someone else said, the similarities are minor at best.

So I guess this thing you posted about in several threads without explaining why turned out not to be so risky after all.

3 ) Too much screen time for Finn. He's already the poster boy for the trailers. Very risky.

It seems like the early marketing for merchandise is on Finn. Not Luke, or Han.

Seriously, I fear this movie won't give us enough screen time to Max Von Sydow or Andy Serkis, and give us too much to new character like Finn who is dominating the marketing in the stores.

Because that was, you know...weird.

I had pretty high expectations and it met them!! :)

Finn's introduction was spoiled by the previews. He was all right. Rey was a bit better, but I found her force powers to be too strong for a person who never knew she had them.

How did Poe survive the crash by the way?

The Snoke character was a joke.

Carrie Fisher can't act anymore and she's not easy on the eyes.

Luke was but a cameo for the movie.

She's 59 years old. She isn't getting into the damn bikini again. Considering the life she had, she looks fine. And she wasn't given a lot this movie, but she was still Leia.

1) That wasn't his introduction, it was during the battle when he refused to shoot the villagers. From the trailer there were people theorizing that he might have stole a storm trooper's uniform like Luke and Han did in the originals. It wasn't confirmed he was an actual storm trooper until later on.

2) He said in the movie he woke up with no Finn and no ship. He wasn't in the burning ship so he obviously ejected out the same way Finn did, just further away. Why is that such an issue? Do you think he teleported?

3) We technically haven't even seen the real Snoke, it was just a hologram. What's the difference between him and the Emperor from Empire Strikes Back? He's a behind the scenes villain, which has been very common in Star Wars movies.

4) That's why she had minimal screen time and minimal dialogue. She wasn't a major role because they didn't want her to be.

5) Nobody said he was going to play a major role, that's why he wasn't in any of the marketing besides one voice over in the second trailer that didn't even make the cut.

Any other weak arguments?

It blew past my expectations but I also don't understand how people could have such high expectations in the first place when the prequels where so crapy. I was afraid the movie was just going to be episode 1 all over again. A movie with a lot of hype that ends up sucking will bad. Instead I got my second favorite star wars movie yet! First time I saw the movie I thought it was just new hope 2.0 and I didn't like the villain but after seeing it a second time I think the movie while similar to new hope is much different and is its own movie and has got to be watched twice. The movie is so much better a second time.

Almost met expectations. Could've been better, but as it stands, I liked it.

You still haven’t explained what was so “risky” about having Finn on the merchandise?

And we already have “what didn’t you like about the movie” thread, so no need for another.
