Comics Different Spider-Man Comics

Don't listen to this guy (WOLVERINE25TH).

99% of the rest of the Spider-Man fan population believes Ultimate >>>>>>>> 616 Spidey books.

616 is the main Spider-Man universe that you know of...
Take these extreme statements with a grain of salt.

Just because there has been some misteps with certain stories in the past couple of years, overall, the main Spider-Man titles (referred to as the 616 universe, as opposed to the Ultimate universe) have GREAT stories, starting with the ones written by Spidey's creator Stan (the Man) Lee!

Ultimate Spider-Man (USM) is great too... But it is in it's own little world. I had read most of the list I gave you above BEFORE I tackled USM.

If you do want to start reading USM, get the HARDBACK Volumes. That is THE cheapest way to collect several years worth of comics. Look for used books in good condition... http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b...te+Spider-Man+hardcover&Go.x=15&Go.y=12&Go=Go

Sure, Ultimate is great if ya love a Spider-Man who gets unmasked every issue, can't beat bad guys without help and stories that take way more issues than they should to tell.

asp27... what prompted you to start reading Spider-Man comics? Just curious. :)

I have bought "Coming Home" i thought it was excellent.

What is the Marvel Knights Spider-man about?

Marvel Knights Spider-man was a slightly more mature Spider-man title. Just read Millar's run from issue 1-12. There's a hardcover out for it now. Pick it up, trust me.

Through out the 12 issues, Spider-man fights a ton of his villains in some beautifully drawn battles. It's just one big time fun ride. It's the perfect story for any new comer to hop on board.

Wait wait wait....I know you didn't just use "unmasking" as a reason why 616 is better than Ultimate....lol

In case you missed it, in the 616 Spider-man just unmasked for EVERYONE.

He's a high school kid with super powers. He's not a black belt. In fact, he was an unathletic nerd. Why the hell would he be an ass whipping machine right away?

Not to say he hasn't beaten MANY bad guys himself because he has.

And what are you talking about? 616 has been doing 7 issue blockbuster-gunna-rock-Peter's-life-forever arcs for the last two years or so. Civil War - The Other - House of M.

Man, just take a look at the front page of this forum to see how "happy" Spider-Man fans are with 616 right now. "How we going to retcon this mess?" , "I am enraged!", "Why do people still buy Amazing?"....lol

I really don't want to spoil some of the twists, turns and surprizes in this...

(AND HOPE OTHER POSTERS HERE WILL DO THE SAME! )

In a nutshell...
When Spider-Man finally sends the Goblin to jail, an unknown enemy who KNOWS that Peter Parker is Spider-Man kidnaps Aunt May. Peter is totally freaked and sends MJ away to avoid this unknown danger. After an embarrassing trip to the Avengers -- he's deparate for help, but doesn't trust anyone with his secret ID -- Spidey visits the Owl who tells him that Electro and the Vulture kidnapped her. He goes after them with a vengence, but he eventually finds out that he should trust no one...

I really can't tell you anymore without spoiling some cool twists... and the suspense is half the fun.... it's a real page turner. :spidey:

You can do both. That's how I did it. I just don't know how can you start reading Spider-Man comics, and really GET the character without reading these iconic stories... unless you're just a half-ass fan.

I agree.

It does suck not to start from the beginning. Which is why USM beats 616 Spidey in my eyes. Since it is one book and has been collected in TPB form since issue 1 (in color!) and it is more modernized it is much easier to get into.

616 Spidey on the other hand, you have to read 40+ years of countless different books (Web of, Sensational, Spectacular...) on top of the fact that those stories and art are "dated" to say the least.

Now, once you've caught up on the first 20-25 years, you discover that the character that perhaps you've liked for all those issues has been flushed down the toilet.

He is a clone. He isn't a clone. Peter and MJ have a kid - that is kidnapped and never heard of or referenced again. His first love was a ****e with his worst enemy and had two kids somehow without telling him. Peter dies and is resurrected with new powers like stingers and oh btw, he is just one of a long line of "Spider-gods" or something and now the whole world knows who he is
....Great. No thanks. Sort of defeats the purpose of reading the first 20-25 years in the first place...

I hardly know what to say to that... You really don't get it... I feel sorry for you. :(

Reading those classic stories from the 60s and 70s -- even in B&W, even with the corny, dated language and clothes (which is actually a facinating window into history) -- was some of the most fun I've had with Spider-Man comics.

But you, for whatever reason (too young, too A.D.D., too cool...) can't appreciate them, so you EXAGGERATE...

You don't HAVE to read "countless different books" to get a good feel for the character, but you DO have to read more than Ultimate Spider-Man!

You also don't have to read every issue of every major event... I'll confess, I have not read the entire clone saga... nor am I anxious to... But I did research it and know what happened. http://www.samruby.com/History/clonesagatimeline.htm

Ask questions, do some research and read what you like... :)

I see MattXG's point about the 616 Universe. It does defeat the purpose to try to read forty years worth of history only to get to the JMS years and see that all of it, from his origin to Gwen Stacy, was not the real story. But you should read it anyways. It's defintely worth it, and one day all of this BS is going to get retconned.
By the way, MattXG also OWNED with the unmasking comment.

Look, I don't mean to piss on 616. However, the proof is in the pudding.

I deeply respect what it was back in its prime but for someone hoping into comics looking to read "Spider-Man", I can't point them to the 616 because for several years....he hasn't been "Spider-Man".

Spider-Man is a pop culture icon. A current mythology. There's a certain frame of storyline people expect to find when they start reading...and Spidey in a crazy suit after just dying and being reborn and being a Spider-God and having some stupid useless new powers...isn't it.:down

Especially, when there is modern retelling of the storry going on right now that is blazing its own interesting path on the old "good stuff". Its night and day I'd say. If you've been collecting for 30+ years, I don't blame you for going down with the ship. However, if tomorrow is Day 1 for you, I'm not selling you a ticket to the Titanic.:)

Okay thank you for all your suggestions.

I will try some ultimate spiderman as well as the amazing spider-man

No, Matt, I've been followin' and Ultimate is as much crap as 616 is now. It hasn't been good since halfway through it's run 'cause

BENDIS

So you hate the book because you have a vendetta against Bendis. Not because it is bad....alright...I guess there is no point in going on with this argument...

Well actually what he's saying is he feels the books stink and he also feels one of the main reasons it stinks is because he believes Bendis can't write superheros....

.....I'm not at all sure how you came up with "vendetta" and "not really bad"
