Director of "Moon" says enough with the 20 something leading actors

I think he means instances like Shia in Eagle Eye, or Daniel Radcliffe's next movie where he is playing a lawyer.

There was nothing about Shia's character in Eagle Eye that made him seem too young though, I mean they especially removed any romantic element between him and Monaghan for the reason that they ended up with a lead younger then the script. I don't know what the Radcliffe movie is but is he meant to be a seasoned lawyer or a jr?

The deal is Radcliffs hardly old enough to be out of undergrad much less Law school lol

You know what I don't get?

The fact that most people can't make solid statements and stand behind them anymore. Today it seems like everyone is so concerned with being PC and not making anyone angry that they'll never make a 100% claim one way or the other.

Jones does...but he's getting taken over the coals for it?

It just seems like no one is willing to be passionately for or passionately against most things...now there always has to be a middle ground so you don't stir up any sort of controversy.

And even worse when they do...a lot of the time they'll back pedal and take it back just for the sake of appearances.

Grow a spine and state what you believe. If it's what you think, it's what you think. If it makes you unpopular...so be it, you're being true to your feelings on the matter.

Not only do I agree with what he says...but I respect his right to say it. Good for him for actually stating how he feels about it.

And this should in no way inflict upon his ability to make films or have films made, are you kidding?

I agree with this. There is nothing that makes me disrespect a person quicker than a person that backs down. It is just pathetic. Even if what they say is insane.

That is one thing I will always respect Bush for. As much as I hate the guy. He never faultered in his intentions. Gotta at least respect that.

I think in essence he wants more Sam Rockwells and Daniel Craigs and less CW stars.

And fewer Disney Channel stars who not only play the lead, but sing half the songs on the soundtrack.

i am totally lost here lol tatum and maybe efron are the only 2 that come to mind and efron has played age appropriate characters and showed more talent than tatum lol

I agree in a sense, but I think because both fanboys and Hollywood look at every movie as a potential franchise, they want their leading characters to be young so they can maintain continuity in later flicks.
In Hollywood's mentality I suppose it makes sense to cast younger especially if your building a franchise and about the comments on Brandon Routh looking too young for Superman in a way Christopher Reeve was in his mid-20's when playing Superman but he bulked up a lot where it seems that Routh didn't do so much and let the padding in the suit make up for it.

But when it comes to a franchise say James Bond I much prefer a leading man in his late 30's early 40's since the character is more believable that way, we don't need Zak Efron as James Bond Jr.

Memo to all 20 year old actors.

If you ever wind up auditioning for Duncan Jones , skip the facial care , walk alot in the sun , drink and smoke heavily. Then you're going to look like someone who has lived :oldrazz:

Seriously. Back in my native country 20 year old look older then the 20 year old here in holland. I dunno how much actors take care of themselves these days but i do think it's far more then what in the 60's or 70's.

Ryan Renyolds is 34 and has a babyface because he takes care waaaaay to much about hes skin.its like he has an airbrushed skin 24 hours a day.

where are any wrinkles around the eyes? not 60 year old wrinkles. normal skin that you have at 30 yr?

Earlier today Duncan Jones tweeted this on his twitter account (Manmademoon if you're interested)

Thoughts? I happen to agree with him. Sure there are exceptions like Harry Potter or Spider-man but when it comes to leading men, especially superheroes, I tend to prefer them a bit older. I mean RDJ was 43 years old when he starred as Iron Man!

Truthfully, this is part of the reason why I could never buy Brandon Routh as Superman or Matt Smith as The Doctor in "Doctor Who". It's interesting that recently Jon Hamm (and some fanboys) said that he is too old to play a superhero at age 39.

So what are your thoughts? Do your prefer older leading actors and actresses or younger? Be honest. Perhaps you really don't care?

I think that some lead character should be portrayed by older, more experienced people. But only in roles that prove an older person can carry the story better. For example James Bond was never supposed to be an young man. He was written to have experience as a naval officer. Plus younger men military can't learn so many different languages and customs so well. That's why 007 is supposed to be a man in his late 30's to early 40's.

I thought it was a pretty clear swipe at the Disney/Twilight brigade and personally I agree with him to an extent... Part of the reason we have so many good actors in that near 30 to 45 age range is because these guys were driven enough to earn their stripes with such strong desire to be taken seriously in their industry.

It would have been all to easy for the likes of Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp to just ride the teenybopper swoon-bandwagon, but they sought out more challenging roles and opportunities to grow from quality directors and are now MUCH better for it.

I love more so how no actor gets any respect until they've hit their 30's. Leonardo Dicaprio was once laughed at by people until he hit his thirties & started making these artsy fartsy, I want an academy award movies. Now you'd be hard pressed to find anyone not calling him the next Daniel Day Lewis. No one respects young actors or young people in general & then are surprised when they receive none back, almost as though they feel it's owed to them simply because their older. You give to get, plain & simple, no one is above the other. if you think you are then your an old fool. Most older people I know, either in their 40's/50's/60's & beyond show no respect for people my age & hate on almost everything they see, & it's pathetic. I can't continue on because this very subject hits very close to home for me & it makes me angry beyond words. I'm out.

Im really surprised people are agreeing with this

1. Most of the big leading men are over 35/THere are not that many big leading men under 30
2. Most are the stars under 30 are in roles for those who are...under 30. That Daniel Radcliffe playing a lawyer
3. Its kind of weird hes saying that considering that he has a "baby faced" under 20 actor leading his next movie
4. Age doesnt matter. RDJ, Jake Gyllenhall, Tom Cruise, Ed Norton, Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling all got nominated for OScars when they were under 30. Ledger was nominated for 2

Side note: Captain America was written for a young man, he was written as a young guy in the comics and in the script. he wasnt going to be played by Mark Valley or Jon Hamm. Get over it

I don't think age should matter. Just as long as the actor can act. I'm sure there are a lot of terrible 40 something actors too.

I don't think I've never heard someone criticise someone else for taking too much care of their body. LOLWUT? I don't think he looks any different than anyone else at his age.

And in response to the original topic of this thread - the bottom line is that the actor is good. If so, age shouldn't matter unless the role specifically calls for someone in a certain age range.

the only actor that i can think of who has aged gracifully and can play characters still in their 30s would be Johnny Depp.

This guy's kind of an idiot. Stick to being behind the camera Duncan. At least have more than one critically acclaimed movie before trying to be eccentric.

I don't he's being an 'idiot' because I agree partially to it, but he's not in the position to say much since The Source Code has Jake as the lead.

It's like Matthew Vaughn saying that comic book movie is saturating the market and people will get turned off, YET he's making X-Men First Class as we speak.

Agreed, but I find a contradicting comment like his idiotic.
