Discussion: All Things Union

To be fair, even if GM wasn't unionized, I think that Saturn would still be shut down. It never really took off as a brand.

The White House vs. Boeing: A Tennessee Tale

Unions are for unions. Period. Don't let them feed you bull about how they are for the workers. They're for the workers only if those workers belong to a union. Otherwise, why would they oppose people in right-to-work states getting jobs? And free choice? Right. They only want operations in states where union membership is mandatory.

Yep. That about sums it up. Oh, and Nissan workers at the Smyrna, TN, plant have declined to unionize three times since the plant opened. I wonder why? :awesome:

I have no words...

I have no words...

What is most despicable about it to me is that they are trying to use government to kill their competition. Rather than try to sell Boeing (and any other company) on the idea that a union plant is better than a non-union plant--rather than actually having to deal with competition--they're trying to use government to shut down the potential for any opposition.

I mean, if unions are that great for business, what are they afraid of? Rhetorical question, I know . . . :o

The government should only be in the business of laying a legal foundation that allows for a competitive environment, not stifling it on behalf of special interests. And that's what unions are: special interests.

I'm waiting on how some around here are going to spin this one......

Captain "dat Chartz iz not show deficit" ? :woot:

Probably the same way you guys on the Right spin bad stories about Right Wingers.

what I never understood is why at certain places (like Stop and Shop here in CT) if you want to work there, you HAVE to join the union...why do you HAVE to?

Because CT is not a right-to-work state. They have compulsory unions. So, if the employees at S&S are unionized, all employees working there in the same type position must be part of the union.

It's ridiculous. One of the justifications I heard about the teacher's/public employees unions in Wisconsin during that whole ruckus was that public employees have a right to unionize under a constitutional "freedom of assembly." Since when, however, is forced union membership "freedom?" Doesn't freedom of assembly by its very nature include the freedom to not assemble?

EDIT: And if anyone disagrees, answer this:

Doesn't freedom of religion by its very nature include the freedom to not practice a religion? What's the difference?

Bills Try to Curb Reach of Unions

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...6.html?mod=WSJ_hp_MIDDLENexttoWhatsNewsSecond

Right-to-work measures were proposed in 18 states this year . . . The laws generally are backed by business groups and Republicans, opposed by Democrats and denounced by labor.

Just so everyone knows, in a right-to-work state, an employee is allowed to choose whether he or she wants to join a union and/or pay union dues. In other states, the employee is required to join a union and pay union dues whether (s)he wants to or not.

Evidently, the political left (congressmen/senators/union bosses) only supports you having freedom of choice as long as it doesn't threaten their power base . . .

Amazing response.

That along with THIS shows how conservative leadership will lead this country and clearly illustrates how honest and genuine their principals and values are.

"Well done" sir... Well done. :cwink:

How exactly is it a victory?
Depends on the perspective. If you're on the side of workers, obviously this is a bad day for Wisconsin. But if you support the law that was passed and see it as a way for Wisconsin to get away from the chokehold of unions, it is a victory.

The TSA are now unionized. That means that things can only get better.

COUGH

That's how everything works. When I get a bacterial infection, I get treated for every possible disease known to man. It would make too much sense to find the exact cause of the problem and then treat it.

According to the AP, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has signed his state's anti-union bill into law.

I just read the retirement portion of it....and it looks to me like it is a retirement calculated very similar to mine....I don't see a problem with it...
