Chem 101:

Water is one of the only substances that EXPANDS when it freezes. This is why ice floats in water. All of this ice we are talking about melting is already in the ocean. Just frozen. when melted it will take up the same amount of space as the water it displaces.

QFT! Just do the old ice cubes in a glass of water example they teach you in elementary school. The water doesn't raise, it actually is a bit lower.

I'm so sick of all this envirnmental @rap. Could the earth just hurry up and explode or whatever already? No ice age or any other result could be worse than having to listen to hippies whine constantly.

this is why nobody takes slim seriously. it's that uncanny willingness to ignore fact and repeat the b.s. that all the lying right-wing pundits tell him to reinforce his ****ed-up ideology.

I guess I'm taken seriously enough for you to make a comment on how "seriously" people take me. :hehe:

Don't be talk'n dat science!

Right, I forgot. People don't want solid science, they want a cause.

Yeah. All the environmental scientists in the world seem to have forgotten this basic fact of chemistry/physics. :whatever:

I'll give a cookie to whoever can point out the huge, glaring flaw in Zoken's argument. Hint: "All of this ice," he's talking about isn't the same, "All that ice," that the environmental scientists are talking about.

[Not sarcastic]I anxiously await my education [/not sarcastic]

this would be right if the ice wasn't resting on a landmass. which it happens to be.

Antartica?

My understanding is that the bulk of the ice caps were actually in the ocean.

I think we're gonna mess up earth, (more then we already have) but it'll fix itself with an ice age and if we lived through the last one... we'll live through this one. Just look at it like a really long winter or better yet look at it like Hoth.

"In East Antarctica, the ice sheet rests on a major land mass"

also

"It is a common misconception that the melting of floating ice shelves will not raise sea levels. Because ice shelves are made of fresh water, they will be less dense, i.e, have greater volume than sea water even when melted."

1) that makes no sense.

2) you're ignoring the pwnage you just received at the hands of everyone's favorite dirty li'l mexican.

Right, I forgot. People don't want solid science, they want a cause.

aren't you ignoring "solid science" yourself?
not with the "melting ice" thing, but with climate change in general?
that's a tad Ironic.

Climate Change isn't a solid science, so I'm not. There are still too many VALID conflicting reports.

I maintain that I agree things need to be changed, but not because of Climate change.

And for a completely unrelated reason *Gives Mr. Sparkle a BIG warm hug*

haha! ok, but seriously, look into it.
it's not 100% proven what role man plays in it, but Climate change is pretty accepted science.
I have NO agenda, nothing to gain, this isn't a cause for me, it's been a common sense issue for me since junior high, when people were afraid of CfC's.

By the way, what ever happened to the Ozone Hole thingy? Did that just seal itself up, or did it just not sell that many newspapers?

we basically took what action we could. so it's not mainstream news anymore. last i heard it'll still grow for decades before finally starting to shrink.

Ooo, Fish-Bulb is ticklish... :hehe:

Now I get what you're saying about Climate Change. THAT I'll agree on 100%.

By the way, what ever happened to the Ozone Hole thingy? Did that just seal itself up, or did it just not sell that many newspapers?

actually, the situation was SO serious that participants in a summit somewhere ( I don't remember ) agreed to cut their output of CFC's in more than half by 1999. that was in the 80's.
it got so serious that in a later summit, they agreed to cease production of CFC's by 2000 ( I don't know if they did or not, but it was greatly reduced)
the Ozone is expected to return to the level it had in 1980 by 2068.
so it's actually quite serious and the increase in cases of skin cancer is widely attributed to it.
at first , like climate change, people called it " insane " and " unscientific".

we basically took what action we could. so it's not mainstream news anymore. last i heard it'll still grow for decades before finally starting to shrink.
There's a new, unpublicized problem, too: pollution is actually leading to the creation of new ozone at very low altitudes. Considering the fact that ozone is pretty much toxic, this is bad news. :csad:

That part is true, Climate Change is Happening. It was cooler this morning, but by noon, it was like warm. I hope that it doesn't keep getting warmer all day. I thought that it was going to get really warm yesterday, but then Global Cooling kicked in and it got cooler by about 20 degrees. We narrowly missed that one!
