Discussion: Labor, Unions, and Workers' Rights

Would they be allowed to join a union? I could honestly see them having "special" status due to the fact that they are minors.

What a bunch of complete, utter, and total BullS***.

Under the business-backed bill, employers wouldn't be civilly liable if kids are injured or killed.

That tells you everything you need to know about it right there.

All about the money. Workers are just cogs in the machine and easily replaced.

The Washington Post - The mystery of the disappearing vacation day
Did you know that Americans are about half as likely to be taking vacation in any given week as they were 40 years ago? Neither did we! When we spotted this alarming trend in an obscure government time series, our eyebrows shot up so far our ears popped.
As a happy side effect of this process, we have data to calculate a much-less-heralded measure: the vacation rate. And we regret to inform you that rate has fallen steadily, from 3.3 percent of the workforce in a given week in 1980 to 1.7 percent today. Yikes.

All the rich executives and CEOs are counting on the belief that they themselves won't be replaced by computers.

The end goal of the capitalists is the elimination of labor (they do not want to pay for anything outside of themselves ever - not labor, not taxes, nothing) in the hope that it will make them richer while not affecting them personally.

Gizmodo - IBM CEO Says It's a 'Good Thing' if AI Takes Your Job
In an interview about the future of AI, CEO Arvind Krishna says replacing white collar jobs is a win for the economy.

Not a win for the lower class. :(

Mark Lawrence, author: "Downplaying AI (both the benefits & the dangers) based on its performance RIGHT NOW, is like watching your living room curtains burn, & saying 'that's all you've got?' & ignoring how fast it's grown from the match flame a minute ago & quite how flammable your house is."

If he were any more out of touch he would be somewhere near Pluto.

Remember when Hilary wanted this guy to be Secretary of Labor? Fun times.

Never thought I'd agree with this guy, but, I think

"that the efforts of unionization in America are absolutely a manifestation of a much bigger problem"

Go figure....:funny:

A little insight into what sort of fun labour agreements expiring around the same time can cause, this is what we have going on in Finland right now:

Industrial and retail strikes looming in February

Strikes in Finnish ports and road transport to continue after workers turn down CBA

Threatened public transport strikes may cause headaches in Finland

Talks fail, Finland's bus driver strike starts on Wednesday

The stevedores strike has effectively shut down all exports and imports. The reason why they are not getting much sympathy is because their average salary is already more than 4000 euros a month, well above the middle income salary and they want an increase that is not in line with other recent CBAs.
