So McCaskill did an interview with NYT about the end of her political career. She raises a few good points, but spends most of the time complaining about "young people" and bemoaning her party becoming more Progressive. Which shows, much like a certain failed presidential candidate, she still doesn't get it. Her and Donnelly spent their whole election running away from their party. Tester and Manchin owned their positions and stood firm on their record. Which two got reelected?

Darn those youngsters who want to revitalize their party and country, wanting to make a difference!

NPR - Democrats Unveil Changes To House Rules On Debt Ceiling, Ethics

Two notable changes in the Democrats' package are aimed at avoiding certain confrontations that became commonplace during the Republican majority from 2011 through the GOP's 2018 midterm rout.

Democrats will revive the "Gephardt Rule," introduced in the late 1970s by Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., that automatically raises the debt ceiling — the nation's borrowing limit — once the House passes a budget.

I liked that too. No... we're not negotiating this. You aren't getting money for the wall - period.

And it'll all boil down to a "both sides are equally bad" situation again, where it doesn't really matter cause each side is gonna run to their camps. Usually it's the dems to feel the shame first though. And that's probably a good thing honestly. This is a sideshow.. a glorified game of chicken... and while I'm entertained and all... we can't forego payments like this for very long til it becomes cruel. It sucks that Dems will probably have to blink first, but that's just a small side effect to having empathy for others. I don't hold it against them.

Unlike the first time, the pressure is on the GOP. There is a good reason why McConnell is trying to hide inside his shell.

GOP had 2 years where they controlled all 3 branches and didn't vote for the wall. The wall is only used for political posturing, and Trump thought he could use it as a weapon to paint Democrats as weak on border security. 5 billion won't even paid for a fraction of the wall and both parties knew it, so Democrats need to hold their ground and not allowed Trump to bully them for the money.

The weird thing too is that we're facing all this.... pretty much over a semantic problem. If Trump came out and said, "Look.. I don't care if it's fencing. We've just gotta get this thing secure, physically if possible as much as we can." Democrats and everyone would respond to that. But it's this absurdity about a wall. Folks such as myself are thinking that it sounds impractical. Like... I don't know how an unmanned wall stops illegal immigration, so I just don't see a point. Fencing can be just as good, and some places a wall is impractical...

I'd think the key things would be:

- To have those drones seems highly valuable. Especially if they have the ability to go infrared at night.
- More border patrol staff and resources for border patrol staff, bottom line.
- Hold Americans more accountable for illegally hiring illegal immigrants. They won't come if they can't work here.
- Streamline the immigration process so that folks who have legitimate grounds to immigrate can do so efficiently and quickly.

Like... a wall isn't even there in my top 10 priorities. It just seems expensive and superfluous to me. If we build one, we'll need to man it. That's a whole new expense of guards 24/7 walking a huge stretch of land. And is that what we want to be, seriously? All Trump has to do is say okay to more border protection money, minus the wall.. and he's got it. No problem.

More personnel and funding can be enacted and then cancelled 2 years later or 6 months later. The increase can even be cancelled in the period after it's passed and before it's implemented so that nothing at all changes. Regardless the Democrats in Congress would be willing to at least initially pass some increased funding, maybe even then keep it in place, but probably not a large amount of funds, a major increase in funding, certainly $5 billion, would probably be considered wasteful if it went to BP personnel instead.

- Hold Americans more accountable for illegally hiring illegal immigrants. They won't come if they can't work here.

I agree that would be the most effective reform we could do.

Depends. Give a guy you met at Home Depot 50 bucks to help you pack a U-haul for a couple of hours? Go for it. An actual business using illegals to cut costs and maximize profits? **** no.
