After Running On Economic Populism, Republicans Want To Destroy The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Senate Republicans are gearing up for an assault on one of the trademark populist achievements of the Obama administration, vowing to take on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The agency, the brainchild of Elizabeth Warren, back when she was a law professor, was enacted as part of the 2010 Wall Street reform bill. Since then, it has returned nearly $12 billion to 27 million consumers who’d been victims of one predatory scam or another. More than 1 million consumer complaints have been filed with the agency.

Targeting the CFPB would seem to be a strange move under President-elect Donald Trump, a populist who won the White House on the back of deep economic anxiety, promising to break the hold the rich and powerful have on Washington.

Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), formerly chairman of the Banking Committee, told HuffPost he wanted to see the agency eliminated. “My top priority is either to bring the consumer agency under appropriations” ― which would give Congress the power to shrink its budget, or bar it from spending money on certain activities ― “or abolish it. But we’ll see what we can do,” he said. “I think it’s been a nightmare, to a lot of businesses, small business. Unbridled power, arrogance.”

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that congressional Republicans were teaming up with pro-business groups to take on the agency. A source close to Trump’s transition team said that Randy Neugebauer, a strident opponent of the CFPB, was being floated as the new head of the agency, if the administration removes its current chief, Richard Cordray.

That may be easier to do now that an appeals court has ruled that the current structure of the agency is unconstitutional, because it doesn’t let the president remove its director at will. If the Supreme Court doesn’t disturb the ruling, Trump would be able to easily fire Cordray.

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), a member of GOP leadership who survived a close re-election contest, said he looked forward to taking on the agency, but didn’t specify precisely how. “Let’s see what the options are,” he said. “The current CFPB is a ridiculous organization set up without control, without oversight, and with one person to be able to do things that one person should not be able to do.”

The agency will not be without its defenders. Warren is now a senator from Massachusetts and a leader of the opposition to Trump. Told that Shelby had hopes to abolish the agency, Warren told HuffPost simply: “No.”

Asked if she thought Shelby could achieve that goal, she said again: “No.”

So this Pat McCrory's a real c***, huh?

Well at least one person who should have lost their job seems to have lost it.

I don't blame him for asking for a recount, but claiming their is voter fraud is pure BS

Well there was. Just remember in Republican's minds, black people voting = voter fraud.

Rick Santorum tells accomplished college educated Dreamer To Leave The U.S. on live TV

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) can’t speak to whether President-elect Donald Trump plans to deport undocumented immigrants en masse beginning next year, but he has made one thing clear: People who came to the U.S. illegally as children, also known as Dreamers, should just leave the U.S. if they’re worried about their immigration status.

Elizabeth Vilchis, a mechanical engineer who said she came to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 7 years old, asked Santorum about Trump’s immigration plans on Tuesday night during a town hall event with CNN’s Van Jones.

“I stand to lose all the work that I’ve done if the new administration decides to end DACA,” she said, referring to the federal program that offers undocumented immigrants work authorization and deferred action from deportation.

“I will lose my career and will potentially be labeled for deportation” if Trump follows through on his promises to get tough on immigration, she said.

She asked Santorum how he would advise her to plan for her future.

He began his reply by talking about his father, who left Mussolini’s Italy to come to the U.S. when he was 7 years old ― even though, Santorum said, “he wasn’t allowed to come because of the immigration laws at the time.”

Then he began to address Vilchis specifically.

“What most people in America feel is that you’ve been given a tremendous benefit by being here in this country,” Santorum said, adding that he imagined she wouldn’t “have had the opportunities to accomplish what you have” in her country of origin.

“My final point is that you have the ability to go to any other country right now and apply those wares, and be successful, and reapply to come back to America,” Santorum added. “Go and make the world a better place.”

CNN contributor Ana Navarro butted in.

“First of all, this is your country,” she said. “No matter what he says, no matter what anybody else says, this is your country.”

“That’s not what the law says,” Santorum replied. “As much as I’m sympathetic to you, you should recognize the gift that America has given you and that you can give to the world.”

If I had a say in the matter, Id much rather a failed politician be depoeted than a college educated Dreamer.

Too bad the US didnt deport his father, then we wouldnt have to listen to the **** that pours from that hole in Rick's face.

I'd love to deport all those against immigrants. "You're not following what it means to be an American." Look at the Statue of Liberty and look at the constitution, chances are very high that those preaching this can be nailed on multiple counts. If they don't like what this country stands for - all men (humans) are created equal and give us your people - they should be the ones who leave if they don't like what our Country stands for. Too many people have died in the fight to preserve and progress this country for Trump to swipe it away.

People seem to forget how horrible Rick Santorum is. I mean that whole party is terrible, but he was considered extreme even by most moderates just a few years ago.

Even though I know where you are coming from....

BUT, exactly what law are they breaking? And this is not to be argumentative in the least, it is just a question.

Also, are we as a government following our Immigration Laws as they are written in the Constitution? I will answer that for you..... No, we are not....

So, though I am one who is actually for Amnesty, I understand the fact that when saying one group is not following the Constitution, be ready to find out that that is pretty much the case on both sides. :csad:

Secretary of state candidate Dana Rohrabacher thinks Russia’s human rights violations are “baloney”

When she brought up that Rohrabacher was referred to by Politico in November as “Putin’s favorite congressman” and mentioned that Russia is guilty of human rights abuses comparable to those committed in China (which Rohrabacher had just denounced), the congressman patronizingly dismissed her claim.

“Oh, baloney!” Rohrabacher exclaimed. “Where do you come from?”

“I come from the former Soviet Union, that’s where I came from,” Golodryga replied. “I came here as a political refugee.”

Rohrabacher responded by commenting, “Oh, well, then that’s good, then the audience knows you’re biased.”

:wow:

More reactionary than laws themselves and being as wide as they are. Immigrants can come in as long as they hold "merit" - sad thing is many people will fall for it without realizing how much the corrupt can bend that to their will. I'm sure most of can agree on who we'd like to deport if anyone has to go - xenaphobic bigots praising Trump for white nationalism as well as the twitter tyrant himself with his cabinet of deplorables. That was the main point I was trying to drive towards.

Ohio Politician Who Lobbied for ‘Heartbeat Bill’ Has ‘Never Thought About’ Why a Woman Would Want an Abortion

Buchy is a longtime proponent of restricting women’s access to abortion — in 2012, he told Al Jazeera that his ultimate goal is to ban abortion completely in the state of Ohio. Then, the reporter asked him an interesting question: “What do you think makes a woman want to have an abortion?”

He pauses. Then he says, “Well, there’s probably a lot of reas— I’m not a woman.” He laughs. “I’m thinking now if I’m a woman why would I want to get … Some of it has to do with economics. A lot of it has to do with economics. I don’t know. It’s a question I’ve never even thought about.”

It really is pathetic that it's "Either we win or we'll throw a massive f***ing tantrum and prevent you from getting anything done at all costs". And that's looking past the voter suppression, their views on gays, women's reproductive health, gun violence, etc. and the fact that these a**holes have the nerve to put on an air of moral superiority while they elevate a man who brags about sexual assault to the office of President.

The bill has passed the House 70 - 36. Now it goes to the Senate. The Republicans are a hairs breadth away from stealing power they couldnt win honestly.

Cooper is promising to sue in the event that these bills pass and are signed, noting that "they will see me in court". It's such a blatant and unprofessional power play by ******** GOP politicians.

I wonder, if Trump did something really illegal, would the GOP try to impeach him or would they just shrug their shoulders?

It's disgusting to see Republicans, the party of Reagan, roll over for Russia because their guy won. If Clinton or any Dem had been accused of this, with the sheer amount of evidence attached, the GOP would burn the entire country to the ground. Hell, as it is their burning the place to the ground just to stay in power. At this point Republicans are, to borrow a phrase from Sorkin, the American Taliban.
