Discussion: The REPUBLICAN Party - - - Part 18

Whatever happens, it'll determine Paul Ryan's political future. If he cannot get his Party in check, get the Freedom Caucus morons on board, and get this bill reconciled and passed, he should resign in shame, just like David Cameron did following Brexit. I don't expect him to, because Ryan doesn't have an ounce of the integrity of David Cameron. Instead he will pass the buck and dodge and spin. But the simple fact is this: Republicans have spent the better part of the past decade promising to repeal and replace Obamacare. They currently control every branch of our federal government. This should've been done in January. If Ryan cannot keep his caucus in check well enough to pass a healthcare bill, then he is impotent as a leader and got beat by the fringe nutjobs that make up the Freedom Caucus. Virtually the entirety of House Republicans will lose confidence in him. He will be a lame duck until he either steps aside or is voted out of his leadership role.

Mind you, that is exactly what I want to see happen. So with my luck it probably won't. :funny:

Even in the Senate this seems like a very difficult thing to pass. It cuts Medicaid, if over a longer time, so the moderates of expansion states are possibly out. And it keeps enough of the Obamacare subsidies that that throws Paul and his Teaper crazies out.

And if this goes back to the House, which passed it with a 2 vote margin, even with new members, the Freedom Caucus will riot again.

Of course, we will see what changes in 13 hours.

Anyone still believing the GOP is the religious party, the patriotic party, or the party of family values is more head scratching to me than expecting Donald Trump of all people to wipe out corruption.

Jesus H Christ, apparently you can't get Medicaid benefits if you are pregnant.

Disagree, Paul Ryan did his job and got it out of the house now it's up to McConnell to get this done. If Ryan can't get something moving on tax reform then it's a different story.

Except of course, with the changes in the Senate, it kicks it back to the House. And given the outright... meanness of the bill, Ryan is going to have a much tougher time selling this compared to the one he passed by one vote, even with a stronger majority.

We aren't there yet, but yes if that happens and he can't get the House to pass it then it is on him. We are getting way ahead of ourselves right now though.

Yes, because a week is way too far in the future to start planning for.

Looks like the bill is going to pass. Most of those that oppose it are going to fall in line anyway. Getting it past the senate won't be easy though.

Most don't, everyone knows them as the soulless monsters they really are. Their brainwashed base is persistent though.

That's why they control majorities in both the House and the Senate...seems like most agree with their platforms.

To be fair, a lot of that is gerrymandering and voter suppression. Democrats win more votes.

Maybe one day they'll get their **** together.

Democrats over play the gerrymandering, Republican House candidates won the popular vote in both 2014 and 2016. They ignore the gerrymandered districts that favor Democratic seats and the fact that Democrats tend to isolate themselves as they tend to live in large cities.

Umm, that is the point of gerrymandering.

I think you misunderstand what I am saying. I'm not saying Republicans just won more seats than Democrats I am saying if you total up all the votes for Republican Representatives and all the votes for Democrat Representatives, more people voted for Republicans.

But in fairness, that is, in part, due to gerrymandering. In many districts it is, simply put, pointless to vote. So democrats stay home.

And Sen Heller (R-NV) comes out pretty strong against the bill. Looks like McConnell is going to have to choose between between him and the Tea Partiers.

Why is it so hard for Republicans to not **** over sick and poor people?

Seriously. Trump keeps going on about how he's not going to cut medicare or kick people off their healthcare, etc. Just let Obamacare live.

They are creating the problem. Bush Sr. raised taxes.

And they never let him forget it. Every time, they talk about it like it's the greatest blunder in Presidential history.

It's odd to think nowadays that that was actually something that could cost a president a re-election.

I think it would with Trump too. He could do every morally despicable thing on the planet. As soon as he raises taxes on the rich folk, he's toast. Sure, his Cult 45 base will stand by him, but Republican congressmen would riot.

Well listen to this ****. A guy I work with, that I've known for 7 years, is an immigrant from Guatemala. Has had a steady job for 10+ years, but only makes $11 an hour. Has a clean criminal record. His wife is an immigrant as well. She works in fast food making a little above minimum wage. Last year they had a baby boy who is deaf. The baby's medical bills are through the roof. The other day they were informed that their baby boy is losing his Medicaid, because they both have jobs. They tried to tell the person that their baby was deaf and the guy said, "That's not our problem. That's your problem."

America, the most wealthy and wasteful country in the world, refuses to help a deaf baby. It's ****ing sickening and disgraceful.

But the same people who support kicking millions off healthcare including children, are the first ones to tell you this is a Christian nation.

Whoever he talked to sounds like a moron. I would talk to someone else. He should at least be able to get his kid covered with CHIP. Tell him to look into that. https://www.medicaid.gov/chip/index.html.
The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) serves uninsured children up to age 19 in families with incomes too high to qualify them for Medicaid. States have broad discretion in setting their income eligibility standards, and eligibility varies across states.
If not he's probably eligible for a heavily subsidized plan in the market place.
