Discussion: The REPUBLICAN Party - - - - Part 19

For a long time, I thought that the problem was our Republican representatives... but I begrudgingly had to change my mind. The actual problem is stupid Republican voters... uninformed racists, brainwashed by Fox News.

It's a sad thing to admit, but after Trump, I just don't know what else to think.

The thing that really gets me is I'm all for spending our tax dollars responsibly. I'd love for pork to be cut as well as making sure our government and it's programs are funded well past my death.

The problem is, not in my lifetime has any Republican President done anything remotely close to that even though it is always a pillar of their campaign. Instead, they always tout slashing any kind of assistance or programs that don't fly with their donors eg climate change etc.

The GOP base falls for it over and over again like clockwork.

I approve this message.

And Paul Ryan is retiring.

I think that is beyond telling at how bad the GOP is thinking this election is going to go.

Good riddance to Paul Ryan. He got his tax cuts passed and wanted to pass his "entitlement reform" but sees how the wind is blowing.

I wanted him to run for re-election, just to see his face this November when he loses it to a Democrat.

What is odd, is that they are claiming he had a strong lead in the polls. So, either the primary would have been much tougher, or something else is coming down the pipe.

He got his tax cuts. That's all he cares about.

He didn't want to be the Speaker of the House, presiding over the 2018 blue wave, which could tar his reputation. And he still wants to run for president again, so best to quit now, before you have a big loss on your hands.

But according to Trump that big loss was the 2012 election. :o

Look... I dislike Ryan for all sorts of reasons, but...

Well we like to characterize people we disagree with in the worst way. Not saying he doesn't deserve my antipathy but few in the world are truly beyond any and all morals or reason. I think Ryan is wrong policy wise and that he's got huge moral blind spots. All that said, are we missing the possibility, just the possibility that yeah, this about a possible Blue Wave and that factors in but what if... Just what if... This frees up Ryan to actually act as a check on Trump?

He is now free from having to worry about the Trump die hards, both in his home district and generally. What does he have to lose now? 8 months can be an eternity in politics. Maybe there is a deep seated patriotism in him that realizes that his career and speakership are worth less than the damage Trump can do? I know it sounds naive, and yeah he should have been more critical and stood up more to Trump than he did but as they say, he could have had a "come to Jesus" moment.

Ryan's moves in the next few months will be telling. Until the election he is still in a powerful and influential position, lame duck or not.

Assuming he retains his Speaker position.

Assuming he retains his Speaker position.

I don't think there is a big threat to that on the horizon. Not impossible but I think it wouldn't help the GOP to have a fight for leadership in the house before a big election. There is a good chance that would lead to more infighting and with a midterm around the corner both sides would be bruised from an internal struggle right before facing their actual nominal opponents in the Democratic Party.

Again though it's not out of the realm of possibility, true, and as I stated politically a lot can happen in 8 months. I just can't see a benefit to the GOP in having that leadership fight before the big game as it were.

So long Ryan, and good riddance. The seat should be easier for the dems to pick up with a better known candidate, but it'll still be an uphill battle.

Entire party probably ****ting their pants right now from the blank subpoenas.

One can only hope they're terrified.

I mean, Nunes is running around looking even guiltier than Trump.

An important note, that may end up being important in the Cohen case. He apparently had access to the RNC's books.

I don't know what you want us to infer from this.

Paul Ryan is 48 years old. He has many years ahead of him in which he can "work" as a lobbyist or consultant for the same patrons who have paid for his campaigns. He owes these people his life. He will not do anything without their approval. They do not want Trump weakened. And he might want to get back into politics one day once his trust fund kids are old enough to live their own lives of luxury as wealthy, privileged brats.

He's not going to turn noble and do the right thing. Paul Ryan has no idea of what the right thing could even be.
