Discussion: WikiLeaks

Well, for starters, Wikileaks last round of leaks revealed information about the torture of Iraqi detainees by the Iraqi police.

Anything that shines a light on torture, is a step in the right direction.

Also, myself, if I were an American, I'd be less concerned about tarnishing America's image, than about America behaving in a way that is consistent with her stated values.

As an american, I am MORE concerned about the potential danger this puts our armed forces in...than any 'tarnishing' of our nation's image.

Not once have the government proven that anyone has gotten hurt by information release by WL. They thought that would happen after the Iraqi War Logs and especially the helicopter murders, but no.

... just sayin'

Yeah, but for the most part, Woodward and Bernstein had class :o

This Wikileaks guy though....he deserves an ass kicking. He just comes off as a massive *****er IMO.

He sort of looks like the ****** love child of Canadian comic Colin Mochrie.

Bah. I am a strong proponent of freedom of the press and most likely everything WikiLeaks publishes it has the legal right to do so (I'm sure the lawyers at the Justice Department are going to have a long year combing through this stuff, just to be sure)...but this is no ongoing "Pentagon Papers" as they like to pretend.

The Pentagon Papers were printed to expose decades of deceit by the government to pull the US into what would become the Vietnam War.

While there are some horrific things found on occasion in WikiLeaks, most of it is vast amounts of information that does nothing but attempts to damage the US's international credibility and undermine her interests.

They've said as much. This isn't about telling a story the American people, or the world, needs to hear. It is nothing but a petulant series of leaks trying to weaken the United States because Julian Assange is an anarchist and wants to hurt the biggest government's interests.

The way this is being handled and released is petulant and disturbing. Yes, he may reveal by accident that Iraqi suspects were tortured by the Iraqi government, but mostly he is revealing sources in warzones (and potentially putting their lives in danger), hurting trade deals and negotiations between governments and trying to hurt the US's national standing after its status has gone way-up post-Bush.

And I find Assange the equivalent of a 14-year-old boy listening to metal really loudly shouting, "**** YOU DAD!!!" And I'm mostly just disappointed that this passes for courageous journalism for some in the 21st century and even more concerned how this may undermine our ability to build a stronger economy, as there are no torture memos in this release.

They are careless and putting alot of lives in danger. And besides, all of this information is CLASSIFIED information that they are leaking. That alone makes it criminal.

He is the political Perez Hilton. :(

I might not necessarily agree with the actions taken by wikileaks, but they do perform a very valuable function when it comes to exposing corruption in countries like China. Before the Afghan/Iraq war diary exposure, a huge part of their operations were based on exposing various dirt on the Chinese government.

Not that the US = China.

qft.

I'm baffled that so many confidential information can be leaked to a website. Can the government find the source of the leak and prosecute him/her to the fullest extent of the law?

Am I the only one who thinks that WikiLeaks does more harm than good?

Definitely agree.....

The Private who leaked a lot in the beginning of all of this should be thrown in the brig for good....

All those funding WikiLeaks should be OUTED, and the creepy owner of Wikileaks should be tried for Espionage.....

Yes...and they should.

Clearly they can get this founder on some childporn charges or something...look at the guy.

The leakers should be persecuted, the publisher should not.

I tend to agree, though I think the publisher is scum and while he has a moral and ethical obligation not to print this kind of stuff, he does not have a legal obligation, nor should he as that is a slippery slope.

He may be scum, I don't know enough about him, but persecuting publishers is a slippery slope on the way towards China.

I think this WikiLeaks guy should be put in jail. He's doing America so much harm right now.

That's not even remotely close to being like China. China jails publishers for talking about bringing democracy and freedom. This WikiLeaks *****e is exposing state secrets and potentially putting our military personnel overseas in harms way.

*note the words 'slippery slope towards'.

I'll start worrying when they start putting morons like Glenn Beck in jail.

co-signed. Shame on the New York Times and any other "paper of record" that thinks publishing the cables is anything more than the equivalent of a tabloid trying to sell more papers with a bawdy headline.

- leak only us' secrets: terrorist
- leak everyone else's secrets: not terrorist

He would be a terrorist by any definition if he publicly leaked any country's classified documents in a time in which they were actively engaged in combat.

Look, if he publicly leaked classified Israeli or Russian documents, they'd consider him a terrorist too. And chances are, he'd be at room temperature, long before now.

Incidentally if he is an 'anarchist', he looks like the kind of guy who might last 2.3 seconds into such a regime.

What did she do as Governor of Alaska that was incompetent while she held the office? Or the mayor of Wasilla? Or as a small business owner?

I'm not trying to be argumentative I just think we throw these things around without really having a strong reasoning behind them. They just seem to be the words to throw around.... even though we may not know what exactly it is we are talking about when asked to give examples.

As of right now, she doesn't hold any office, and is therefore simply giving her opinion. We may not agree with the opinion, but I'm not sure if that says she is competent or not...just says she holds a different opinion.
