He seemed to forgot about the selling of fellow brothers and sisters. Also his mention of it being a holocaust. While completely valid, I honestly don't remember him complaining about the actual holocaust being portrayed in a very similar manner in Tarantino's last film.

Also Tyler Perry is a Tyler Perry.

That Holocaust comment is typical Spike Lee. Underplays other tragedy for African American tragedy. It's best not to compare the two.

Yeah, you are completely right on all accounts.

Still, you'd think Spike would be in a good mood right now. The Knicks are actually good. But he apparently can't help himself.

Spike Lee should review the film and bring up reasonable concerns and critique. By just releasing a short and predictable statement that adds nothing to the conversation he only makes himself an "angry black man" caricature and target for defensive whites to personally attack.

He'd have to see it first.

“I have a definite problem with Quentin Tarantino’s excessive use of the n-word. And let the record state that I never said that he cannot use that word -- I’ve used that word in many of my films -- but I think something is wrong with him."

:whatever:

Spike can be such a cry baby. He seems like the kind of guy that thinks only white people can be racist.

As always he's just looking for attention...and no, that time in history with slavery going on should not be considered a holocaust. Ridiculous comparison.

I don't get it. Does Spike Lee and other people who have come up with this subject think that back in the day they were going around to slaves and saying, "Well, hello, good sir! How is your day?!" NO! They were racist as all hell back then. They probably said it way more than this movie in a thirty minute period.

Yeah, it's a degrading term. But it was reality! They need to stop acting like Pandora's box hasn't already been opened. This cat has been out of the bag for a long time.

Just watched it. Great Western, great film.

Spike who?

Just kidding, but who cares about what he has to say about a film he hasn't even seen?

I don't think his issue with this movie is so much the use of the word, but the tone. I think Spike's issue with QT's use of the N-work mostly applies to his past films.

Just realized James Remar played Butch in the film. He was really good.
Also great to see Bruce Dern in a Western again.

He's always had an issue with Tarantino, mostly because he feels he's exploiting the whole black cinema thing somehow.

Cant wait for more people to have seen the film, so this thread becomes more about Django Unchained and less about Spike Lee.

Why is it so ridiculous?

Are you saying hundreds of years of slavery was less tragic?

Don't get me wrong, it was definitely tragic and incredibly ****ed up, I just think the holocaust was much worse.

*slowly walks out of thread*

What about all those nameless men, women, and children who were buried alive whenever the winners overtook and razed a fortress from the losers throughout the entirety of Eastern and Western military History? It was all too common and frequent.

spike lee can make whatever comment he wants to make on the film.

I'll still enjoy the film and enjoy spike lee.

To me, tragedy is tragedy. I hate these anti-dick measuring contests. This " terrible thing that happened to a race is worse than this terrible thing that happened to a race". They're both awful and arguing which one is worse is useless.

Come on Spike, take a chill pill mate, I don't know what Quentin has done to offend you but it's Christmas pal, just sit back and enjoy the film, everyone else seems to love it.

The Holocaust was more compact and over a short number of years, many people died, but it was not "much worse" than slavery.

Slavery robbed the dignity of entire generations of people, demolished their self-esteem, and treated human lives as worthless. No doubt, given the hundred of years it was practiced, more people died as a result of slavery than in the Holocaust.

Both slavery and the Holocaust were horrible atrocities based on destructive ideologies. I understand if Spike Lee feels that this movie is a mockery of the real pain that was endured in those times.

However I think Tarantino is a great filmmaker and I doubt his intent is to disrespect Spike Lee's ancestors. Tarantino's movies seem to center around revenge as of late featuring brutal poetice justice doled out to those who are brutal.

Treacherous assassins, psychopaths, Nazi soldiers, and slavemasters all get justice dispensed to them in extrememly violent ways and the catharsis associated with that combined with intense dialogue and offbeat humor is part of what makes Tarantino so great at what he does.

I remember reading something about Quentin being unsure and apprehensive as to how IB would be received in Germany. The results were Germans loved it because it gave them the opportunity have fun with a very dark part of their history. I wonder if DU might have a similar reaction States side. I don't think Tarantino has ever disrespected cultures, he's certainly never done anything with intentional malice.

The strange thing about Spike Lee is that he's actually a very smart guy, but his experiences growing up in the Civil Rghts era and in the post Civil Rights era has made him sensitive to issues regarding how African Americans are portrayed.

I like Spike Lee, but there are many moments that he puts his foot in his mouth though.
