Do I need a Gamecube controller to play GC games on the Wii?

What else would you use? I mean, the four GC controller ports are right on top of the system.

I didn't know that, Mr. Smarty Pants :o
I thought the classic controller was going to be compatible with GC games

It's definitely a possibility, but remember that the classic controller communicates wirelessly with the Wii via the Wiimote, so it makes it all the more doubtful. Until further news is announced, it's better and safer to assume that classic controller compatibility with the GC games isn't possible.

But you know, the controller issue between the Wii, Virtual Console, and GameCube backwards compatibility hasn't been clearly addressed. A lot of fans are under the impression that the Wiimote itself can be turned on its side and used for NES games and that the GC controller will be compatible with all VC games. And then there's the classic controller, which has been speculated to work with both GC and VC. So the whole issue is a mystery.

Yes you will need a Gamecube controller to play Gamecube games on the Wii.

Also, some games made for the Wii such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and multiplatform games will be using the Gamecube controller.

Brawl is still up in the air, but I haven't heard of any other game utilizing the GC controller...

They HAVE to use the GC controller for brawl. It would be insanely difficult with the wiimote. Too few buttons and the motion sensing would be disastrous.

I can see a lot of multiplatform games ending using the Gamecube controller because they don't want to take the time and effort to make the version unique. Lower production costs.
