There's no word in the English language that could aptly describe it. Respect is merely a facet of 'fear' in the divine sense. There is also an element of actual fear - as in fear to do wrong.KingOfDreams said:I get it, though I've never equated the word "fear" with "respect." Still, that's not a very positive term to use especially if it truly means respect. Well, maybe to some it does but there are many Christians who use fear (as in fear) of God to manipulate others.

Spider-Bite said:Think about it for once second. There is absolute overwhelming scientific evidence which contradicts the bible.
Spider-Bite said:If God is real, and somebody just so happens to believe the wrong story based on the available information they had in front of them at the time, does that mean that they deserve to be TORTURED for an ETERNITY? If God does this, does that make him a heartless God who tortures and brutalizes his own people, much the same way Saddam did? Torturing anybody who doesn't believe what he wants them to believe about him?
Spider-Bite said:Doesn't this spell weak argument as well? Threats of hell only weaken the credibility of the religion. If the Bible actually had a strong argument supported by facts and evidence then it wouldn't need to scare you into believing it.
Besides the Old Testament says some really horrible things. It says that slavery is okay, and that it's okay to beat your slave as long as "IT" can walk again in 3 days. It's says people should be executed for living a homo sexual lifestyle, NOT BELIEVING(totally Osama Bin Laden's policy) working on Sunday, any child that swears at their parents, and many other things. Killing people is wrong, and the Old Testament actually says it's okay to kill somebody simply for believing the wrong religion. It's completely discriminating against other lifestyles and cultures.

TheSumOfGod said:The "God" of the Bible, IMO, is nothing more than a fictional mythological character, so NO, I'm not afraid of a fairy tale. His insane and violent followers, however, I find to be quite disturbing.![]()
The Question said:Parts of the bible. Other parts are actually supported by a good deal of scientific evidence.
Yes. But why assume that this is the way of things?
Actually, there was a somewhat valid reason for the anti-gay aspects of the odl testament. When that was written, people were living in small nomadic tribes. For the survival of the tribe, it was best if the most children were born as possible. Homosexuality hinders that. Not saying it was nice, but to a degree, it was necesairy. Really, it was different times back them. Things worked differently. The tribes were poor. They couldn't afford to pay workers. So they had slaves. It's just how things worked back then. Things are quite different now.
They all have a justifoable set of virtues. Thow shal not kill, thow shall not steal, that's good stuff. It's just that it was not written by one person. It was written by hundreds of people over several centuries. And they all added their own opinions.
