Which do you prefer? Personally I liked the BB's gotham. Very dirty and "Blade Runner" like.

theyre pretty much the same scat thing without showing the narrows, thats it! That and no Wayne tower, Arkham, Wayne Manor and the monorail.

I've only seen TDK once, but I'll say Begins. Like you, I loved the Blade Runner feel; the environments seemed more tactile... I also felt, in places, it seemed a bit grander - the Wayne Enterprises offices for instances. TDK looked brilliant as well, but I think Begins ultimately wins out.

The main difference I felt, aside from obvious settings, was the lighting.

The new film features three distinct tones: one is slightly blue-green; another is neutral, almost black-and-white; and the third is a rust-like tinge that references Batman Begins. “Early on, I suggested to Wally that because the film is called The Dark Knight and is about, metaphorically, extremely dark subjects, it would be interesting to play against that for much of the film and make things as bright as possible, even as the material gets darker,” says Nolan.

The only time I ever really felt the 'Begins rust' was in the chase scene with Joker and they were under the freeways and the Tumbler was destroyed.

Exactly

You guys know the scene where the camera zooms into the new wayne tower? Theres a Batman Begins monorail in the background. Next time you see the movie look for it.

Other then that, they are the same Gotham to me. The movie doesnt show the old Wayne tower (more than one office is realistic) and the narrows. But it does mention Arkham and Wayne manor (which is being rebuilt).

Sure there wasnt as much rust in the Dark Knight..but they did have it in some scenes, including a lot of the scenes of Batman at night..which to be honest made up a large portion of Batman Begins. Remember the ending scene of Batman Begins as well as the shots of Bruce in Asia..those weren't so rusty either..

To be honest, sure maybe Nolan took a different approach to Gotham in The Dark Knight, but he didn't quash continuity or change the city in major way. I like to think that The Dark Knight shows different parts of the city..

what about the fact that batman and harvey dent had cleaned up much of the city in six months, wouldnt that have an effect on the way that gotham looks?

i loved the blue tint to some scenes in the dark knight, especially the hong kong scene although it's not gotham. i always compare the yellowish/orange color of BB's posters to the blue of TDK posters. i love the blue.

They're pretty similar to me. In fact I thought The Dark Knight was "prettier" during the day and uglier at night than Begins. Like the batpod chase, two face scene at the end, shots of gordon and Batman trying to save rachel and dent, also the night scene where batman gets the finger prints. This film just had a bigger variaty of colors, like blue and green, but it still had the Begins dark brown. I guess I'll go with the TDK Gotham right now, but they're basically the same. Gotham being a realistic city like nyc and chicago rocks though, can relate to it more, and TDK's color schemes really helps

Although I know a lot of people here prefer The Dark Knight as a movie, I think Batman Begins has a far better atmosphere when it comes to the city, and the two different versions are shown in a far different manner this time around.

All the dark grittiness of BB is basically gone. The orange tinge, the dark sets rendered off bright lights. The whole city feels like Gotham in BB - just like in Batman 89, the city isn't just a regular American city - it's Gotham. It's dark and brooding. One can feel just how dangerous the streets are, and is perfect for the likes of Batman to stalk.

The TDK Gotham is no different to any other city. I'm not sure if that was the point (Gotham has been cleaned up now..), but it's very bright, very modern, and it just didn't feel as unique as BB (or B89 for that matter). In this movie, the characters were the ones that made me feel like Gotham was a dangerous place, and the city played no part in that. I guess in a way, it made the likes of The Joker more terrifying, because Gotham looks so peaceful on the outside, but once we get in further it's a terribly dangerous place.

I do prefer the BB Gotham though.

for those who wanted the monorail in TDK--this will have to suffice!! :woot:

I'd never seen this poster. Has anyone seen this anywhere?

Well, er...Batman Begins' Gotham was an original interpretation. TDK was simply a flawless continuation. I loved the narrows however, so I will go with Batman Begins.

It's a tough call because they're not dissimilar. The only real differences seem to be the missing monorails (which is no big deal as far as I'm concerned). It's true, we didn't see the narrows. But I never considered that it didn't exist...just it didn't pertain to this story.

Having said that. Man...it is tough to say. Because TDK really does give us the sense of a real city...more than any Batman film. And that's something I love. Batman Begins did too, but not quite like this.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing the Narrows make a come-back in the next film.

The good thing is that BB's Gotham does not contradict TDK's Gotham. We were just shown different locations in each movie. Makes the whole city seem even richer.

I like them both the same, i wish their was an option for both.

Hopefully we can get it with the dark knight video game...something like gta 4.

Lighting wise I'd say this Gotham is much more glossy and artificial. It looks like a more realistic American city, but it is a facade of a city on the edge of collapse and a "glass house," if you will. The only time they went back to the lighting schemes of Gotham in BB was during the mid-way climax with the chase through the streets right up to a shodown between Batman and Joker with the original Wayne Tower in the background, when Batman completely pwns Scarecrow and the drug dealers at the beginning and when Joker kills the Chetchen and Lau, as that scene was the return of Gotham's collapse before Batman's introduction in BB.

Otherwise it went for a more realistic glossy look that became very tarnished and artifical looking as it wouldn't last. The end scenes are of course in complete darkness as well. I do appreciate there was an awful lot of daylight shots used, though.

P.S. As for the city itself, it looks the same (i.e. Chicago) except the claustrophobic/Blade Runner-esque Narrows is nowhere to be seen.
