The Dark Knight Rises Art design & cinematography - The Look of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

TDK was a style intentionally it was suppose to symbolize Batman and how the city was temporarily being cleaned up. If you look at the end of TDK the look changes when Dent and Bats face off, in the world of Bat's destroyed.

I hope each of them have their own unique style. I like the way they are doing that.

i want a red hue!

batman begins = orange/gold (dusk) - key word=begins
the dark knight = blue (night) - key word=(k)night (that's probably a long shot)
the dark knight rises = red (dawn) - key word=rises

it only makes sense for it to continue the trend. after all, as harvey dent said, "the dawn is coming"

I'd love some rain, fog, or snow.

Art design wise, TDK was far too style-less for me. All of the flare of Begins was gone and it was just a replication of Chicago as opposed to Gotham being a city of it's own. The next one will probably have a different style, hopefully back to a similar direction of BB.

See I never thought that. It was clean, but far from featureless. I loved the lighting in TDK more so. But that's me. I think both has great looks just different.

I want to see a car chase scene take place in the rain. Similar to Inception... but picture it with a Batmobile! Epic.

Can someone give me an example of a movie with a red hue?

That sounds painful on the eyes. :o

The BTAS intro had a red hue at night and the flashback scene in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker where The Joker gets shot by Timm Drake had a red hue outside in the sky at night. The whole Batman: Vengeance video game had a red hue throughout the night in the sky.

So I think The Dark Knight Rises should be sepia tone with fog during the day and red tone with snow during the night.

Yeah, well... that's animation. I can't really see a Batman live action movie with a red sky, unless it's something stylized like Sin City or 300.

The red hue and snow stuff are pretty out there. Considering this is a live action film that will be shot in Chicago in the summer, I'm fairly certain we'll see neither.

Except if they shoot in a closed set whenever they need snow.

I want lots of rain and a red tint and the film should end at dawn as the son rises.

Tons of pink, chilled blue & green neon lighting...all throughout- even where it makes absolutely no sense to.

(Maybe some ice puns, too)

No, I kid. I think a very orangey/bleak and a feeling of autumn to start out. Let it feel like Batman's being chased through his own personal hell.

Then as he comes upon whatever villains adding to his already afflicted chase being carried out by GCPD, we get winter/whitewash. Have lots of dark darks/contrasting with the bright purity of the surroundings. Have Batman do some AWE INSPIRING all-frosty fight scenes with a villian like Deadshot or Catwoman.

Then, as others have suggested, with his 'rising', allow for the metaphor of Spring to mirror what's going on with his redemption in the eyes of the citizens of Gotham. We get blossoming of hope, as well as sunshine and a bright dawn/warm orange or yellow glow to the cinematic scope.

Personally, I have yet to see a red hue that I liked in a film--even more so when it comes to t.v. shows--so I hope Nolan goes for a look that combines both BB and TDK. Basically where BB felt in your face and TDK's scale felt more epic in scope, it would be nice to have a more intimate feel, but at the same time feel very broad.

Snow for the win. Screw fog, Snow prevails.

I love Batman Returns if anything because of the snow/Christmas setting, but I doubt Nolan will do that for The Dark Knight Rises. Per Nolan's comments, we'll probably see something more along the lines of The Dark Knight in terms of the basic aesthetic, but naturally a little different.

That would be pretty much the only way there would snow, given the shooting schedule in Chicago. That is unless the story goes to another snowy locale like the Himalayas in Begins.

Many reports have said that Nolan is red-green colorblind and if it's true then you can count red out. Nolan isn't going to predominately make the film in a color that he cannot even see. In fact, Nolan has never made a movie with many red tones at all.

I never knew this until I saw your post and looked it up. That's kinda amazing, given how incredible his films look.

I'm still not getting how you do a red tone and make it look natural and not like the film is taking place in a photography dark room.

It's just not as natural as blue or golden hues. They occur more frequently in nature. The sky sometimes looks red at sunset, that's about it.

Yeah as long as there's no red throughout then Nolan can correctly do color-correction, choosing color palettes, etc.

Good thing Nolan is only producing the new Superman movie then... ;)
