I assume most people aren’t happy with the choice, but I’m curious how many people like the idea.

And if you like the idea, please tell us why and do your best to sell me on the idea.

… I could use some cheering up.👀

Did I screw this up? I tried to make a poll, but I’m not seeing the options.

Im honestly not sure what the plan is here with bringing RDJ back to play a completely different character, i have to assume he is playing the doom from whatever earth the MCU fantastic Four are from and he just happens to look like earth 616 Stark, especially since the Russos said he was Victor Von Doom and not Tony Stark, so that takes the Stark Variant idea off the table, idk, i am as puzzled by this casting as most people are, especially since RDJ has been the face of the MCU from 2008-2018, and many fans i have seen since endgame miss as Tony, if this is some round about way to bring Stark back these seems an odd and overly complicated way to do it, which i dont believe there will ever be an Iron Man in the MCU again, so idk, hard to get excited when there are talented actors out there that could easily be a good Doom, bringing back your biggest star to play a new role seems desperate? IDK

I honestly thought when this first announced, I would be in the minority of disliking this... but there were quite a few people that seem to share my sentiments that this casting is just weird. I have no doubts RDJ can play a good Doom, but why? He just wrapped up the most iconic story in the MCU and IS Iron Man. Now if he's legitimately playing Victor Von Doom, why? Is he going to wear the mask all the time? I doubt it, so it just seems like it will be distracting. If he's playing a variant of Doom, okay... but Doom is a big enough character that didn't need RDJ to carry it. It needed a good actor for sure, but come on... RDJ? Let someone else give this a chance. No sir, I don't like it.

That said, just like with anything I'm interested in, I'm still going to give it a fair chance. But it does NOT excite me in the least bit.

No.

It's just a calculated move to win back the general audience. For the first time, Marvel is backed into a corner and they're desperate. We've seen several studios backed into a corner and desperate. Sony with their Spider-Man properties and WB with their DC properties. They rushed things and it backfired tremendously.

IF (big if) they completely separate the characters - with RDJ behind the mask with a voice and mannerisms that are completely unrecognizable. Then use CGI not only to de-age him but change his face in any college scenes.

But my fear is Marvel thinks it will be clever to tie the two characters together without realizing how wrong that is.😬

I think you will see a significant amount of fans who won't like this move. But this wasn't done for us. They cast RDJ as a cheap way to try and win back the casuals who stopped watching. That's all this is. This isn't about getting the best actor for the role. There are other actors who can play Doom great. It's stunt casting. Feige doesn't care if this cheapens Doctor Doom or giving us a villain we can watch the next 10 years. This is about getting that next Avengers movie to 2 billion and saving his job.

but then what is the purpose of bringing back this actor if the audience is not even meant to see his likeness within the portrayal?

RDJ’s ego and Marvel’s desire to put his name on the marquee? 🤷‍♂️

I’m not saying they actually intend to do it right, but there is a route to do it right if there’s any sanity remaining at Marvel.

I’ve been ready for MCU Marvel to carve out a new identity ever since 2019. Deadpool & Wolverine really felt like the first step in moving past the Downey stuff with the Fox properties now being invited into the fold

We couldn’t even get a full weekend without this snarky little weasel popping his head back into the fold

Iron Doom probably will be scarred and will wear the mask. At least until he becomes God Iron Doom and he fixes his face and we have to just stare at RDJ's mug the whole time. But I think if anyone is expecting Marvel to not lean into Iron Man similarities, you're delusional. They didn't cast Iron Man here by accident. Marvel actively wants people to think about Tony Stark. This isn't happening otherwise.

not that you are wrong, but just to be clear I was asking rhetorically :)

and here we all were thinking that Sony was being confusing with all of those reused Marvel actors in the Venom 3 trailer :funny:

Praying to disheveled wizard & moonlighting magician Alan Moore to place a hex upon Brian Michael Bendis, the one usually responsible for inspiring these erroneous creative choices

You can call this stunt many things - cynical, creatively bankrupt, pandering. But it ain't cheap. Downey was making $50M and up for his last few films and I doubt he gave Feige a friends and family discount for his next contract.

I am also not sure Feige is a) on the firing line or b) desperate to keep his job. He is the most successful producer in film history and I am pretty sure his family won't be starving if he and the Mouse part ways.

I am hoping this is a Groot, Rocket Raccoon or Mandalorian situation where RDJ will cash his massive paycheck without his face appearing onscreen. We shall see.

Come on Zarex, you know what I meant by cheap. You know I didn't mean the literal definition of it being by monetary value. You know I meant it artistically, spiritually, etc

This is coming off as hostile. I don't mean it that way. I meant this more in a Come on Bro friends kind of way. Just wanted to clarify real quick

Iron Doom is canon and he's not a bad character.

Also RDJ won't be playing Doom forever. This is just to hype up the Avengers movies which they desperately needed.

Not a problem. I saw the word "cheap" being used and thought it would be mildly amusing if I intentionally misinterpreted.
Ah well, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

I should have read the joke into it, but.. this casting has me hot! Lol, I aint gonna lie.

nah, I'm not. I saw clips of the reveal; of course everyone will cheer, the man is a legend in this community. no way he would get booed. but this announcement really does feel like they've run out of ideas and are becoming desperate.
Run out of ideas?

It's from the comics.

I trust the Russos.

They knocked Thanos out the park even with a silly time travel subplot.
