Superman Returns Does Superman Returns actually have any fans of it on this board?

Before he even left the atmosphere there were like 4 big Krystals of Kryptonite growing out of the bottom of the Island in front of his face. And a scene later they show that the Kryptonite has even almost reached his hands before giving the final push.

There was so many Kryptonite in close proximity, he should have lost his strength immidiately and plummeted back to earth with the entire Island.

Thats what i thought the first time i watched the movie. But in subsequent viewings i realised that the rock underneath the kryptonite that goes in his face doesnt fall away until he is virtually in space. I know because i watched out for that part the 2nd and 3rd times i saw it.

perhaps those are mutated kryptonites... not so powerful... you know... like FOS built out of ice but those ain't really ice.
If anyone else has brought this idea up, I don't remember it. It is a good question though.

The "pure" Kryptonite crystal...mutates the minerals of the Earth to create NK....and thus the amount and effectiveness of the "mutated" Kryptonite can be questioned. Even though people saw a fair amount of green material on the Island...it is diluted Kryptonite...not as powerful as even the small "pure" shard that is left in his body when stabbed.

So...even though a great deal of Kryptonite is "thought" to be seen by us the viewer....it is in reality possibly only green tinted rock with minute amounts of mutated Kryptonite in it...thus not as powerful and making it not so hard to toss the island into space.

Well, they were powerful enough that Superman was unable to defend himself against 3 normal men. Yet he manages to lift the Island into space with a little shard of real Kryptonite stuck in his side.
I agree with sf2 that the Kryptonite in the makeup of the island is a diluted/mutated form so not a spowerful as "pure" K, thus it has some weakening effect but not as much as pure K.....with that in mind, remember that Lex had a large piece of "pure" Kryptonite in his coat pocket which would weaken Superman so that he can be beat by him and his henchmen. So you have a combination of pure kryptonite being withing feet of him and the whole island being permeated by weakened, but a great amount, of Kryptonite.

Makes perfect sense. I like that theory.

Until sf2 brought it up...I hadn't really thought about it myself (just passed it off as not well written part of the film)...but now I have a plausable explanation for the scene that clears that part up for me.

i passed it off as Superman being supercharged by the sun.

but the diluted kryptonite aspect does make a whole lot of sense.

Well you two seem to have established a nice little theory.

Except he had a piece of "pure" Kryptonite inside his body. How do you explain that?

It depends on what incarnation you are refering too, Chris Reeve's Superman had a big ball of Kryptonite hanging from his neck and he was paddling water pretty good.

I don't like that their was a shard in his side, wasn't really needed, it was enough that he was lifting NK riddled with watered down Kryptonite in my opinion. They should have just cut the shard.

Easy just specificly choose to get up and go to the bathroom durring the useless hospital scene and viola no piece was stuck in him.

If you did happen to see that scene perhaps hypnosis to make you remember being in the bathroom at that time during the movie and that you missed nothing in the movie....

Now to find a way to white wash the snooping superman scene from my mind....:super:

I agree.its like being shot,it doesnt matter how strong your will is,once it takes its toll on your body thats it.

It weakened him. As far as I know...no one (actually connected to the Superman Comics or movies) ever said that that even a tiny amount would kill him (or kill him in a relatively short time)...they say it weakens him, lessens his powers, makes him more vulnerable to outside things (such as being shot or stabbed and having things actually penetrate his body)...so, he was stabbed, a piece was left in his body, he was weakened and almost drowned, then most of it was removed, he was still weak, got a resurgence of power from the sun, exerted himself to lift the island, and then finally succumbed to the influence of the "shard" left inside of him.

Umm sorry that just doesn't work for me glad it does for you but that is one heck of a weak excuse.
In almost every superman ever written or made into TV or movie he is made weak and helpless by Kryptonite yet in SR we are supposed to just throw that out the window???? Even in the face of facts from the movie where he was so weak to even defend himself mere minutes earlier....

Thanks I will stick with hypnosis and white washing the plot hole parts of the movie from my brain.... since the more I think about the movie the more of them I can find seems its chocked full of plot holes and inconsistencies....

As you say...whatever works for you.

I know that it has always been stated that Kryptonite "Can" kill Superman....but the amount and the time of exposure has always varied. This has been a source of frustration to me in all my years of reading and watching Superman...and because of it's history of inconsistencies it lowers my appreciation for certain productions but hasn't as of yet ruined them.

What Movie isn't ? Superman Returns is not the only Movie out there today that is chocked full of plot holes and inconsistencies

well the same thing happened in Superman: the Movie...he was wearing a huge chunk of kryptonite that prevented him from even getting out of the pool, yet 1 minute later he's smashing through the roof of Lex's underground place......WITHOUT any recharging from the sun...

Thus my saying that the history of Kryptonites' effectiveness has varied with all mediums it is used in.

You shoot him..you know the bullet will bounce off.
You hit him with a crowbar....you know it will bend.
You hold a piece of Kryptonite in front of him....will he fall down, stagger, zap it with heat vision, go into a coma....what?

I....I...feel free,i am reading these arguments and i no longer feel the need to interject,i know what i liked and didn;t like and what i perceived to work and not work and i now am content to not debate the point....:gl:

Umm LMAO the Kryptonite was NOT stuck in him in STM nor was he stabbed with it in the back.
Many versions show once the Kryptonite is away from him he regains his strength almost instantly.

It has way more than most especially for a supposedly criticaly acclaimed movie....you know those movies that are supposed to be well done and not full of plot holes and inconsistencies....

There are many versions that don't show this as well. I am sure you read the comics then, so I don't have to explain the different variations of effects Kryptonite has on Superman.

I've always believed that kryptonite should have a complete crippling effect on Superman. Being that its his only weakness, I think that he should be damn near indefensable when around it. And I'm sorry, weakened kryptonite or not, him lifting the continent into space with a shard in his back and kryptonite right in his face, I just didn't buy it. Kryptonite might as well give him a cold.
