Superman Returns Does Superman Returns actually have any fans of it on this board?

I agree, that their shouldn't have been a shard in his side, not sure what the point of that is when he was already fighting the Kryptonite in NK. I also think that Superman doesn't have a specific set of symptoms when dealing with Kryptonite that is common across the board.

I agree with sf2 that the Kryptonite in the makeup of the island is a diluted/mutated form so not a spowerful as "pure" K, thus it has some weakening effect but not as much as pure K.....with that in mind, remember that Lex had a large piece of "pure" Kryptonite in his coat pocket which would weaken Superman so that he can be beat by him and his henchmen. So you have a combination of pure kryptonite being withing feet of him and the whole island being permeated by weakened, but a great amount, of Kryptonite.
nah. i dont buy that either.
even before he was stabbed he was useless. and this supposed diluted K was powerful enough to burn his hands like acid while he was crawling. looked like pretty effective K to me.
then when lois pulls it out there is still a shard in him. how, if he still had PURE K in him, did he manage to even fly up to the outer atmosphere to get a sun charge. the film decieved us into thinking it was all gone. it was like a re imagining of the 1st films K scene. where ms tessmacher takes the Kchain off him and only when she throws it down the drain, did he get his powers back.
only when lois threw the Kshard out of the plane did he get up and fly out. BUT. what about the PURE k shard still in him.????
there is no defending this.

anyway u look at it. it was a MASSIVE KRYPTONITE ISLAND with the stuff growing all around him. pure green. yeah it was mixed in the earth but that doesnt mean it wasnt pure K growing. and even if u can accept that its diluted K. the MASSIVE amounts of green K growing around him as well as the pure K shard inside him makes this scene just ridiculous.

I think, and pray, that they kill Jason in SR2... till then I'll watch the Donner cut of Superman 2 over and over again...

Jason won't die. Then superman would have to become lonely and emo again. Who wants to see that?

kryptonite doesn't work like it did in stm for some reason so it's a real mystery to me what kind of k this was or whatever. And I know superman's not the smartest in this movie version of him but to walk straight up to the ONE person in the entire universe who he KNOWS has sprung kryptonite on him before, just took me right out of the movie. I was shaking my head at that. Why not bend over while smacking your butt and saying "come and get it!" @_@

And donner's cut should rule, yes.

He was useless...because Lex had a large piece of K in his coat pocket, just feet away from him, as well as the diluted K of the island. Were his hands supposed to be burned, because I took as they were scraped by his fall (the diluted K made him vulnerable to scrapes)...if it was burns, then yes, that was from the diluted K of the island. I said it was diluted, not harmless. He was weakened by the the K being diluted, if it had been an island of pure K he would mosy likely have died from that amount of exposure.

Superman was away from the very large amount of diluted K. So only the small amount of pure K was effecting him at this time. He was able to regain a portion of his strength and abilities by the large amount being gone...so that he was able to fly up into the atmosphere. There he got a major rejuvenating shot of solar power, recharged his batteries, and was able to remove the island.

He went down below where the diluted K/crystal was growing....and after cutting it with his heat vision picked up the bottom that was still Earth material. As he flew it up, the dilutedK crystal finally started to grow down enough to start coming out of the bottom. By this time, he was high enough up that he was able to throw it out into space using the last reserves of his strength. That is why he passes out, damage from original pure K knife, pure K shard still in him, and being in close contact with big quanity of diluted K, causes him to go into a coma. After the K shard is removed at the hospital, his body is able to repair itself.

That is a very good explanation Sir, i never though about it like that. I always thought the shard in his back was a stupid part to put in, but it was very small, therefore may not have weakened him as much.

cmon. seriously, thats seems to me to be scraping for answers to an illogical and contradictory scene.
so a chunk of K in lexs pocket is enough to make his useless as well as teh supposed diluted K. but a shard of Pure K actually IN him wont affect him as much. please......
where if at all does it even say that this island K is diluted. looked pretty pure to me.
his hand injuries were not from a scrape on the ground. the K was literally burning his skin.......thats how much it affects him.
if that reasoning does it for u then fair enough.
i see it as clutching at straws though.
but each to their own.

Sorry you think so. I actually think that "logicaly" it works. The theory changed my perspective of that scene. But if it doesn't work for you...then it doesn't work for you. No big deal.

As I and others have said. The effectiveness of Kryptonite varies by writer and genre it is presented in. There is no definative quantifying amount of K to amount of pain/loss of strength chart to go by. So it is pretty much subjective to the person viewing it.

nogster said:

I thought I had made it clear...This is my theory. sf2 questioned the amount of power in the island's K, and I proposed the theory of the diluted K. This comes from - Lex hollowed out a large chunk of pure Kryptonite and inserted one of the FOS crystals in it. When this combo was shot into the water, the crystal began to grow around the K. It had been established that the crystal was a form of alien/Kryptonian technology that grew in water...but Kryptonite has only been shown to be pieces of irradiated chunks of the planet Krypton that doesn't transform into anything else when in contact with Earth minerals. Thus, while the crystal worked with the Earth's minerals to transform itself into the island of New Krypton, the actual chunk of "pure K" can only be broken up, crushed, or in other words "diluted" and thinly spread across the whole of the island.

While this is possible...it has never been shown before that contact with Kryptonite burns his skin like acid. I am going by the precident of previous movies, TV shows, and comics that has it weaken him, but not burn him.

You see it as clutching at straws...I see it as scientific questioning and discussion....that's the great thing about everyone being able to have and express their own opinions...it gets more food for thought out there.

I agree..well thought out C.Lee

The only question now is...

WHAT WILL KRYPTONITE DO TO SUPERMAN IN THE NEXT MOVIE?

Will it:

a. Make him pregnant

b. Give him MORE power.

c. Nothing at all.

Stay tuned for another bat-tastic adventure in the wacky world of superheros, kids.

I look at the K-situation like this. I hate peas. If I have even one pea on my plate it's gonna effect me and my entire meal just cause it's there. The pea won't kill me, but it certainly does have a negative effect. Now, put that little pea in my mouth and I'm gonna throw-up, but put 100 peas in my mouth and while making me smell 1,000 other peas I'm gonna lose all my strength and pass-out.

In summary, Kryptonite is a lot like peas.

There's no telling how it will be used next....there is no definative answer on the potency of any specific amount of the green K....and the various different colors that effect him in weird different ways fall in and out of favor in the Superman mythos of the comics.

maybe... superman has developed his immunity to resist the kyrptonite effect after healing from the stab?

No i doubt that could ever happen to be honest, Kryptonite has and will always be Supes' weakness, but it has been portrayed so differently over the years that there is no definitive effect it has on Supes.

I'd say extreme to total powerloss each time he encounters green Kryptonite is a definitive effect.

I think the K will def. play a role in the sequel. I've been able to watch the movie again several times, and Jason looks to be empowered by the K; remember the piano scene happens not long after Lex brandishes a large piece of K in front of him and Lois.

I admit I don't like everything about Superman Returns, but this is FAR from a bad movie. I seriously think a lot of people who hate would like it if they saw it at least one more time. I wasn't as big a fan, but I watched it again and really saw Singer's emotional appeal and the beauty in the cinema.

I like it more and more each time I see it. The cyclical use of Brando at the beginning ("You will travel far, my little Kal-el"...) to Supe's repetition of those classic lines at the end underscore the feeling in this movie. There is real tension between Lois and Supes. You know, I didn't like Bosworth very much -- but her performance here is by no means terrible. I believe her acting -- in fact, had she been more intimate, that would actually have felt wrong.

So, anyway, yeah, can't wait for the sequel! I have a feeling Jason might play a larger role, esp. if that K island somehow comes back into play.

Genius, man. Peas suck. They're green, and lo and behold, so is Kryptonite. Convenient? I think not.:)

Well, that's one of the possible explanation.

I totally agree with this post, i am on my 4th viewing now and everytime i have watched the movie i have enjoyed it more. It has a lot of emotion and quality moments that make the movie a really good repeat experience.

This is far from a bad movie, and it ****s all over X3 IMO, and for me is the best movie of '06. I think people really need to give it another watch, and then if they still dont like it, fair enough, but i think some people will turn from haters to people who enjoy the movie. I've been saying for 3 years that people need to re-watch Hulk, and when the sequel was announced a lot did, and are now fans of the movie when originally they hated it.
