Playstation Insomniac's Wolverine

Wolverine is one of my 3 favorite characters ever, basically in all of fiction, but this looks like too much cheap graphic blood gore to me. There is so much splatter here it's to the point of being cartoony. It should have real impact and you should feel the weight to it viscerally, rather than what appears to be the studio trying to make it "fun" or over-the-top desensitizing.

Insomniac has really fallen off the last 5 years and I am still hoping this game can do justice to the character. I realize there is so much that can be done still, I'm just going off my impressions based off the studios history and style. Certain characters like Spider-Man are the perfect for Insomniac, it just fits the DNA of the studio to this point. Wolverine not so much. Keeping it in the Sony family, I think the studio that could have done Wolvie the most justice is Santa Monica.

Yeah, I thought the trailer was a bit over the top with the blood and all. And I don't immediatelly associate Logan to all that gratuitous blood. But since I'm not into the character in solo adventures, seeing him mostly as an X-Man, I thought that was just a misconception of mine.

Interesting your opinion as a fan of the character.

There is certainly some gory imagery in the comics, but the translation from the page to different mediums is not always direct. I'm sure a lot of Wolverine fans will love this, but this fan is not really vibing with it atm. Again, too stylized and gratuitous a translation for me. Perhaps there are settings in the game to tone it down so these "moments" feel more impactful as something to build up to, perhaps during a Berserker state, etc.

Just a waiting game to see what the combat is actually like. The combat is one reason why I am waiting longer for Spider-man 2.

I do think the slicing and dicing is a bit excessive when it's just normal human morons and soldiers. Like, unless he's really lost it, one stab or slice is going to do the trick.

Yeah, if you are fighting super-powered monsters or enemies, you need to go all out.

I don't really care about how bloody or the gory the game is. The game being a Wolverine game though is the thing that is making me not excited. I'm way more interested which X-Men and villains are going to show up, but playing as the Wolverine is just not in my top of the list.

The game looks awesome anyway. Making him taller isn't a choice I agree with but it's certainly not a dealbreaker.
Based on recent responses after my post, the consensus in the thread doesn’t even seem to be that the game looks “awesome”.

We had the chance to have a mainstream version of Wolverine with a comic accurate height and Insomniac decided not to honor that.

I spend money on brand new games very sparingly ever since they’ve become $70 and I got better things to spend my money on so for me, it absolutely is a deal breaker.

I think because it's somewhat modeled after God of War they felt they had to dial up the melee combat and hacking and slashing and blood and gore to go with it. Plus, I think since the X-Men: Origins Wolverine is having a bit of a fan resurgence they want to draw in people who liked that game, which was fairly bloody and gory for its time as well.

Gore isn't for everyone but the graphics at least look great.

Unfortunately as far as tall Wolverine, that was probably a choice derived from how popular Hugh Jackman's Wolverine has become. Not what I personally would have gone with but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

But hey, if the reviews for this are stellar you can always wait for a price drop.

I know he's not super short in this, but he doesn't seem particularly tall. It's tough to tell but he looks shorter than the Reavers.

I get that Wolverine is canonically 5'3", but even comic book artists struggle to properly reflect his accurate height. He's always been drawn much taller.

to the bolded, yeah for sure. I have a huge backlog of video games to go and to be honest if I do ever decide to play this, I might not even get to it by the time we have a Ps6 😂

but yeah, if by "awesome" you meant just the graphics, then yeah. it looks about as good as what you'd expect from a Ps5 game. I just don't appreciate their choice to cater towards what's been depicted in live action for Wolverine.

like, imagine if Stephen Graham was cast as Wolverine way back in the 2000s. this disconnect/change in the perception of his height might have never happened. and I think Graham would've made a great Wolverine, too.

he looks average height, and average height is still taller than his comic book height.

it's one thing for comic book artists to struggle to reflect his accurate height properly, since they at least back in the day had to hand draw everything.

but it's another thing for Insomniac, a video game's studio full of experts & professional developers to not reflect it. if they wanted to, they definitely could have. this was a creative choice, one that I don't respect. hell even X-Men '97 got it right.

look I should preface this again by saying I know that this is a me thing. the only reason we're talking about this now is because I posted my opinion, and I get that it's just me. but it's also my choice to consider this a deal breaker and not waste my money on it

I hear you about the height, but while I'm hacking and slashing with Digital Wolverine, I'm probably not going to get too worried about it.

The game looks fantastic, but more than anything, I'm excited to have a brand-new story-heavy game starring several X-Men characters. I love that Mystique is involved.

I have no issue with the violence, either. Logan has metal claws... He should do serious damage.

He seems clearly meant to be a bit shorter here, he isn't tiny but I can tell they've pointedly made him shorter than most of his enemies.

It's hard for me to tell how tall game Wolverine is. Considering Liam McIntyre is over six feet, I wonder if they simply didn't worry about it and wanted to keep the game model accurate to McIntyre's height.
