Saw this last Tuesday. Still can't figure out if I liked it or not. There were a lot of good attributes, but the script really needed a polish with the stucture, and I wasn't terribly keen on the editing. Acting was top notch, and JGL did a phenomenal job of imbuing a lot of sincerity in the movie. The nightclubs, nature of addiction, family dynamic, dialog - it was all dead on accurate. The porn stuff was maddeningly uncomfortable to watch, though. It really straddles that line between being honest and too much. Though joe does make a valiant effort to allow the audience inside Jon's mind and examine the obsession he has with the fantasy of porn and how it destroys his ability to connect with the women around him.
Of those women, I was surprised how much of a ***** Scarlett was in the movie. It's not really shown in the trailers, and in some ways it lessens the impact of Jon's arc, since she really doesn't deserve him. I will say I thought Brie Larson was going to go wasted without a single line in the movie. In every scene, including every week during mass, her only purpose in the movie is to sit there texting on her phone. It actually speaks to her as an actress that she started to steal attention in her scenes without doing or saying anything. It pays off with a wonderfully touching scene at Jon's parents' house toward the end.
Plenty to like , and the movie's not necessarily bad, but there was so much not to like (for me) that I'm having a hard time praising the movie as much as I'd like. If JGL continues to write and direct, I'll be interested to see his evolution. Ultimately, this was a solid, if very flawed, debut effort.
