Doug Jones (Abe Sapien) as Silver Surfer?

I have not seen any announcements from Marvel about what the Silver Surfer is going to be like in the Fantastic Four sequel. The only announcement I have seen about the Silver Surfer is from Tim Story and all he talked about was the Surfer being a new CGI design which leads me to believe that it does not matter what he looks like or how big he is because the Surfer will be CGI.

I'm gonna go with the live-action-with-CG-tweak rumour I think. Doug Jones isn't someone who tends to do motion-capture - he's an actor, not a stunt man, and if he's going to do the role then I reckon it's live-action.

Have you seen what Tim Story told Moviehole in an interview?

Yes I have, and that was 2 weeks ago. This story has just broken, and I think CG is involved, certainly, but I will bet my bottom dollar that the character ain't completely CG. You don't hire someone of Jones' caliber to do motion-capture.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see, huh.

The only thing about that article is they state recent annoucements from Marvel stating that it is not entirely CGI but there have been no annoucements from Marvel about it at all that I have seen.

Sooooo ... maybe they know something we don't? As I've said - I guess we'll have to wait and see. The film starts shooting in a few weeks, so we won't have to wait for very long.

Personally I hope that they do what Bill Nighy did with Pirates is have Jones on the set in one of those grey suits interacting with the cast but then the CGI guys put there Surfer designs on over Jones performance.

His physical acting in Hellboy (voiced over by David-Hyde Pierce) involved a ton of prosthetics and make-up...What's the diff if it's motion-capture?
The performance is still there; that's what counts.

Hmmm ... I suppose it's the physical presence that make-up and prosthetics allow. I know in motion capture the actor is still on set interacting with the rest of the cast, but the hefty CG involved I find kinda disassociates the actor from the other cast members in the end. It just doesn't look that real, and it looks a little remote and non-involving for both cast and audience. Much as I liked Davey Jones and his crew of ne'er-do-wells, it lacked a certain immediacy. I much prefer prosthetics. CG just isn't the answer to everything, and I like having a real personality and character on screen rather than one once or twice removed by CG. And Doug Jones is THE actor in Hollywood who is called upon to act under heavy latex and still turn in a fantastic performance. Which is why I don't think Fox will waste his talent under motion capture - I sincerely think it'll be prosthetics with CG touch-ups, much like Abe. At least, that's if they have any sense, but when have studios been known for having that in any abundance.

And Again and Again it's all about his performance. Alan Tudyk and Bill Nighy are more well known and accomplished than Doug Jones they were hired to do motion capture whats the difference.

What kind of makeup could you possibly put on someone to make him look like Silver Surfer without it looking horribly cheesy? He's not even technically a physical being, he's made from a malleable substance.

I think thats actually a good question...and hopefully one that will be answered this weekend...

More well-known? Probably. More accomplished? I seriously doubt it. Silver Surfer is an amazingly physical and graceful being, and I think Doug Jones will do an excellent job - and yes, it's all about performance. Of course it is!! It's called acting.

I still think it will be live action with CG enhancement, rather than simple motion capture, but as I've said and as have others here, we'll just have to wait and see, won't we?

So, we find out today for sure...... what do people think? Is it him?

I think:

1. It will be him.
2. That will be GREAT news.
3. Big Sis may be someone who knows more than we do at this point (though she seems to be playing a bit coy), and I hope she sticks around.

Coy?????? Me??? :D!!!! I'll stick around, have no fear, if ya don't mind me galumphing about with my big boots on. I too, think it will be Doug. And I too think that will be great, GREAT news. And I STILL think it will be live action with a bit of CG thrown in, just on looking at Doug's past work. He's just not a motion-capture kinda guy. But I suppose all this conjecture don't do nothin' - we'll just have to wait and see.

We don't mind based on the color of the big boots. If they are green or yellow then you will have to leave..... now.

I totally "resemble" that statement.....

Doug Jones: "No Comment" on Silver Surfer
Source: Edward Douglas
July 20, 2006

At the San Diego Comic-Con panel for Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, Doug Jones was outright asked if he would be playing the role of Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfer, in next year's Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer. While he did give a "no comment" at first, he would confirm that he's not planning to don a green-screen suit or doing motion capture for any movie in the future. On the other hand, he was wearing a shiny silver shirt and said that he really liked that color and that he has a whole outfit of that color picked out and is just waiting for his "credit card to be approved." Hmmm....

This is not what I wanted to hear, but I'll wait and see what happens.

Looks like Big Sis was right about this. Congrats. This just makes me wonder what Story was talking about with this "new CGI design" that was supposed to be so incredible

That basically tells us his in. If he wasn't involved he would of said "No". He's in guys trust me, I'm pretty good at detecting that stuff.

Hmmm well it sounds like he's in. Sounds more like they'll throw him in a reference suit to act with the actors ala Gollum.
