Rise of the Silver Surfer DR. DOOM/Julian McMahon Discussion

Ultimate Doom is HORRENDOUS!

Doom needs no powers. DOOM'S KNOWLEDGE IS HIS POWER!!!

Yes, you are talking to one of the biggest Doom fans on the planet so I know how Doom talks....

Yes, I know that about you. Same for me, which is why the "we've gotta be happy with what we get" and the "movie-goers won't get it" arguments fall flat with me. I do not go to movies wondering if the people next to me are having a good time. I go for my enjoyment. (The audacity!)

I also will maintain to my dying day that audences would have embraced the Doom origin presented in Annual #2 in only 12 pages more fully than the Norman Osborne corporate clone with ABSOLUTELY nothing special about him except his money that we were presented with. People like stories about extraordinary individuals and "powers" were NEVER what made Doom extraordinary... really the entire FF as well.

I love the Kirby / Lee story in FF annual #2 but I think I will have to disagree with you about bringing the annual verbatim to film. I really think people would find it oddly ananchronistic to show the Romany in colorfully painted horse drawn wagons and wearing the clothes of an era long past. Like in FX's "The Riches", a family of Travelers, they would most likely be in an RV or an old Airstream, a ragtag caravan of vehicles. (at least that's what my cousins in Europe tell me.) Now I could by an origin that would more closely follow Brubaker's update in "Books of Doom"

And I too dislike the use of colloquialisms by Doom but I think it would be a mistake to make his dialogue too florid. It should be toned down a bit, like the character of V in "V for Vendetta"

anyone thought that the doom were seeing could be a doombot? cos it dosent show his eyes, its just got big red lenses?

Armor Dammit!

I'm sad to say it, LS, but I just looked at that old leaked pic of Doom in Shanghai again, and the arms don't look like that. They look like rubber with metal gauntlets and a metal chest plate. Having seen what Winston has done with the Iron Man armor, the above pic would've ben so much better than what I antricipate we will get.:csad: I'll be extremely happy if I'm wrong but I think that would have involved major reshooting since we already have seen a pic showing otherwise.

He's being enhanced with cgi I believe.. which was stated a few times.

From what I was told, CGI metal is being applied to his arms, legs and neckline. And I'm actually gonna go out on a limb and believe this source because I can see something of it myself in one of the latest TV spots. Also, if you look closely at the Doom costume photo, there are red dots on the arms, which will signal CGI engineers where to do "their thang".

What we're looking at in that Doom photo is a production photo reminiscent of this still from X3:

xmen22.jpg

Notice that the areas around his eyes are cut-outs, and the jointed costuming. Initially many fans flipped out over this. But in actuality, CGI was always the plan to glaze over the open areas, joints, etc., to give the character a clean, seamless look. And we didn't see that until X3 hit the theaters.

The same will hold true with Dr. Doom from what I understand. He will have full armor but the design of it would be too heavy and cumbersome for Julian to move around in (fighting) in real life. So CGI enhancements are in order. And again, I actually believe this "rumor" because it explains why FOX Marketing was so intent on us taking down those photos here at one time....they didn't want a repeat (and misinformed) backlash like they had with X3's leaked Colossus pic.

Yes, I believe that too. The only problem is that the very design of his "armor" is garbage. This chestplate: people are saying in another thread the "To me, my board" is a corny line. Hah, not as corny as this chestplate of absolute commonplace regalia. Sheeesh...

Not to mention the mask, one of the worst designs of a mask I've ever seen. It was created to strees that Doom is "evil", which, in itself, is quite stupid. I mean, if one writes the part as it must be, the classic mask is the best to go with.

Hah.....disagree....:o

Victor Von Doom is a monarch...a man of royal authority. A breastplate featuring classic royal emblems is totally appropos in my opinion.

You have no idea how happy I'd be if that was the case in lieu of seeing him in a rubber suit, BUT this opens up another gripe for me. If they're gonna have Doom in actual armor, I'd have to think it would've been less expensive to do the armor practically than cgi it in and save the money for things that actually NEED cg like Reed stretching! Unless of course they made the decision AFTER people complained about the leaked pic. And I zoomed in very deep on the pic I've got and saw no red dots but maybe we're talking about 2 different pics? Anyway, I'm with you, I WANNA SEE DOOM-MADE ARMOR!

btw, did you check out the behind-the-scenes stuff on the ff1 extended cut? They have Jules in a full body silver muscle suit! Why oh why didn't they show the arms and legs instead of having him wear dress pants and shoes and long-sleeved coat??!!!:csad: :cmad:

IMO, putting him into the armour ya'll want would give him next to nothing as far as movement.....(I know they are doing it with Ironman) but I still think this is different......on a surfboard trying to move with the armour ya'll want.....and it LOOK GOOD.....I think they are correct in going with the CGI.

And if they made the decision after people complained why did he have the red dots on during the filming....

I agree the armour would limit some movement

A: Doom is going to be less like the Norman Osborn-esque billionaire and more like the Dr. Doom we all know and love -- with a scientific mind that rivals Reed's. While you can't just ignore how the character was set up in the first film, I think we're getting much closer here to the Doom in the comics. Personally, I would love to see him stride into the U.N. in full armor as ruler of Latveria in a future film.

Does this mean hes not the ruler of Latveria in this film?

That means Doom lives at least.

Some of him with the Surfer, talking to Sue and being hit by Ben, I think?

Hey, that's the question I sent in but they didn't use my name...:cmad:

GS, did you ask the one about him calling Reed "Richards"??

I am glad to see he said he did not use the lame romantic triangle part. It was mentioned in the novelization so that goes to show we shouldn't believe everything in there will be in the movie.

Yeah, actually two of my questions got answered, the other being the one about the rivalry b/w Richards and Doom. Payne's answer to saying "Richards" name was interesting...he says he wouldn't say it unless he had a psychotic break...could that still mean we have him say it, even once, maybe at the very end? What do you think?

I agree here,it doesn't matter how the armour is applied as long as it's there,i mean yeah they could have had a practical suit for ground shots,i'd have liked that but for the surfing shots it needs to be CGI as i am sure all Iron Man's flying sequences will be.
