Rise of the Silver Surfer DR. DOOM/Julian McMahon Discussion

When Doom had his first encounter with the surfer, he reminded me alot of Darth Sidious.

Am I the only one that doesn't care about Doom's voice?
I don't see why everyone doesn't like Julian McMahon's voice. It's not that bad.

It's not BAD per se... it just doesn't have that iconic sound which it should. It's a normal human voice coming out of a big evil costume. Doom should have a Darth-Vader voice in that it should stick in your mind. But at the very least I think it should sound filtered through a helmet or something to make it or menacing.

A slight accent and that sense of an older medieval king should come through in his words. Instead, I hear Julian McMahon doing the same slightly-terse strain on his voice as in the first one. It's less than itself to me, and takes away from the classic feel.

Doom's dialogue should be written (and spoken) in ALL CAPS!
as in:

"CURSE THAT MEDDLING, NO-ACCOUNT RICHARDS! DOOM WILL HAVE HIS REVENGE!"

or perhaps

"BORIS - ACTIVATE THE DOOMBOTS!"

or even

"DOOM WILL BUY A VOWEL, PAT!"

I don't think he should have been over-the-top, just menacing in his voice. Simon Templeman (a great VA from the Blood Omen series) did his voice perfectly in the animated series.

Yes he did. His Doom voice was perfect, and part of why that Season 2 of the Animated Series Doom is the best interpretation of the character outside of the comics.

Too right!

That said, I think "Let's all go for a spin" was an average line which was delivered well. And the line "Tag... you're it!" was a rubbish line but the ferocity and hatred of the delivery made it work, so I'll give McMahon credit where credit is due.

First it was 'Susan, let's not fight"

now it's "let's go for a spin!"

Aye yie yie, those sure are some memorable lines that even make Doc Ock's 'peel the flesh' and all of Nicholson's Jokers lines look like washed up crap.

It's not Julian's fault, it's the writers.

I really hope Payne's treatment of Doom isn't a reflection of the quality of the Simpsons movie. I want the jokes in that movie to actually be funny.

FOX wont let him use an accent. I remember he planned on using one in the first movie but the execs hated it...

Yes. He's from Latveria so he kinda has like a European accent. See the Animated series to get an idea of how Doom sounds.

Julian's Austrailian though.

what part of europe would that be?

[edit] just checked where its located on wikipedia. so he would have a mix of a romanian accent with croation and serbian mixed in i guess..

I really haven't seen much of an accent mentioned in the comics except for that one time when Doom used the Ovoid Mindsway with a bystander at the last second to avoid getting blown into dust when Terrax and the Silver Surfer had their fight in FF#260. The man's name was Norman McArthur and his wife complained that he came home from the supermarket talking like Arnold Swartzenengger. I always thought that would sound silly myself.

I prefer some of the novels that came out around 4 or 5 years ago written by Pierce Askgren or Danny Fingeroth teaming up Spider-Man with the Hulk, than Iron Man and finally the Fantastic Four. Doom was most prominent in the last book where he harnessed the power of the Negative Zone (which would make a great comeback in an FF movie). The novel describes his voice as somewhat cultured, as befitting someone educated at Oxford, with only a very slight accent ... which Julian did sneak into one scene in the first film or they just didn't reshoot. I would surmise that Doom would sound no different than say Rutger Hauer. Someone who speaks the King's English fluently but with a slight but unplaceable accent. Many Europeans are fluent in multiple languages and with young Victor having been educated abroad, I think a heavy accent would be incorrect. Plus, Doom being Doom, he would task himself to learn any languange fluently. In the comics, he even learned to speak Atlantean and was able to decypher Russian cryptology in addition to his native Romany language.

Doom had a better voice in the Corman version and that's a fact. ****, he even had a better costume in that version!

I don't think McMahon is a bad actor. I really don't. He just doesn't embody Doom in any way, shape, or fashion in these movies. I think maybe he could, but the material just doesn't allow him to.

The simple fact that Doom has these pithy one-liners in the movie shows how wrong it is.
