Dracula | Blumhouse

Dracula: Toby Stephens
Jonathan Harker: Henry Golding
Mina Harker: Jodie Comer
Van Helsing: Kenneth Branagh
Renfield: Stephen Graham
John Seward: OT Fagbenle
Quincey Morris: Travis Fimmel
Lucy Westenra: Hannah John-Kamen

They definitely need an actor who’ll stand out and do something a little unconventional.

The three most famous Dracula’s are Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee and Gary Oldman and they are all very different from one another. No bland Dracula please.

Also, they may just do an Invisible Man and have it from the victim’s POV and hardly ever see Dracula until the very end.

I did really enjoy Claes Bang in the role (BBC's Dracula), despite the absolutely horrible third episode.

Hunky Dracula: Matthias Schoenaerts

creepy, sickly Udo Kier style Dracula: August Diehl

Ohhh I like the Schoenaerts suggestion.

I also like the idea of Mads but I feel like he gets suggested for every villain.

Yeah, I'd like to see Mads as a heroic character more often. It's more interesting, IMO.

The fact most kids today know him better as the proprietor of Hotel Transylvania with the voice of Adam Sandler, I think they need a complete reinvention of the character. Maybe look closer to Nosferatu.

If it's in America, set it in New Orleans, most likely. Or perhaps Charleston, South Carolina. Those southern mansions, spanish moss forests and coastal rains could be crafted to a very unique neo-gothic aesthetic. And, of course, there's always the possibility that, if this is set in America, Dracula might be American too. I'm picturing him as once a slave plantation master in that scenario.

Thoughts for a cast:

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Dracula

Janelle Monae as Mina Murray

Dev Patel as Jonathon Harker

It's gonna be interesting to see how they'll update the mythos. The Invisible Man had a much easier transition into modern day.

I dig this cast! Very out of the box choices and setting it in the south could be good, though they'd have to take care to differentiate it from the Ann Rice stories and True Blood.

I could see them reimagine Vlad as a modern war criminal, like something similar to the Bosnian conflict. Then he could go into hiding and insinuate himself into a wealthy family, three sisters for example...

with a father who loves names with three syllables.

I just don’t want it to be another goth translation. I’m sick of the guy who wears his shirt half unbuttoned and sexually awakens women.

Dracula was goth before the TV show, too.

I mean, to be fair, women have always loved Dracula. Bela Lugosi got tons of fan letters from women.
I actually borrowed Dracula novel from a female friend. :D

About the director. I saw only two films of her - Jennifer's Body and Aeon Flux. Both were bloody awful. So I don't know what to think. Does she have anything better worth checking out?

Totally. I love the guy, but I dig the idea of him as Van Helsing even more than as Dracula.

If they’re going for the more overtly creepy Dracula, I could see Lars Mikkelsen pulling it off.

But, wow, for a traditional handsome take on the character...Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has lodged himself in my brain. That’s a really interesting choice.

Mads or Nikolaj would be cool. Nothing against Gary Oldman, especially since his was a more human/sympathetic take, but there's something to be said for an imposing Dracula. And since a modern Dracula presumably won't be wearing a cape, I'd go with someone who has that sense of presence without one. That way he'll feel like Dracula even without the traditional context.

I love a good Dracula adaptation as much as the next guy, so I'm excited to see how Blumhouse will approach it.

However, we've already seen a million different variations and adaptations of Dracula. One of the reasons why the new Invisible Man was so successful was not only because it was fresh and inventive, but also because the Invisible Man is not nearly as prolific a character as Dracula and Frankenstein. It was more ripe to bring a fresh and exciting interpretation to the masses. I don't think anyone was rolling their eyes and saying "Not another Invisible Man movie!" So while a new Dracula will be definitely cool, I'd kind of prefer to see Blumhouse take a crack at another less--frequently-adapted and less-recently-adapted movie monster. A prime choice would be (as I've now said a million times before) a modernized, horror/thriller adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. ;)

Man it really is too bad that they screwed up Dracula: Untold so much because I did enjoy Luke Evans's take on Dracula even though they made him more of a superhero in that movie. Mads, Nikolaj and Schoenaerts are great suggestions though. Each of those guys could balance the romantic, sexy side of Dracula with the darker, scarier side of Dracula really well IMO, but I have a feeling they might go with an unknown for the role.
