Chloe Zhao/Universal developing ‘Dracula’ as a Sci-Fi Western

@KRYPTON INC. that fight lasts longer than what an unplanned scene between Holmes and Dracula would do. :p

Besides, I was thinking more Rey Mysterio vs Big Show (WWE). Granted, it's all fake, but if you put the theme into the real world, one connecting punch from Big Show (or a man of his size and ability) would easily KO someone like Mysterio, but he'd first have to make that connection.

Over time, a guy like Mysterio could wear down the big man to the point that a connecting punch/kick might just do the trick (or it may be the case that no amount of force Mysterio imposes is enough, and that Big Show would simply get tired and go to sleep).

This is why the public domain is so important. You can do literally whatever you want with the guy! Cyborg-Dracula? Do it! Pirate-Dracula? Make a franchise!
Also now public domain; Zorro already by nature a Pirate/Western, then add Dracula...

You get a supernatural sword, forged with alchemy...

And some very courteous conversation while flying around blood lusting and face slashing.

Dracula is THE character for me and it breaks my heart that Bram Stoker's Dracula (which I loved) is essentially the closest thing we've ever got to a true adaptation. I mean they got it when not focusing on the weird romance angle such as how evil this man is and the fellowship between Mina, Harker, Van Helsing, Seward, Holmwood and Quincey.

What studios don't get is that Dracula isn't meant to be the central hero of a story. He's to his own story what Thanos is to the MCU or what the Emperor is to Star Wars; the despicable villain that just needs to be stopped at all costs before they reap their destruction on the world.

That story has not been told for Dracula on the live screen yet and that's why it actually disgusts me to see this news. THIS is their big idea after the failure of Dracula Untold - another outsider story but in a "futuristic sci fi western."

I mean what. The. ****.

The Louis Jourdan version from 1977 is probably the most accurate I know of, although it does combine Arthur and Quincy into a single character.

2021 Oscar History-Maker Chloé Zhao Talks 'The Eternals' & 'Dracula' - Variety

What can you tell me about your Dracula project for Universal that has been described as a “futuristic sci-fi Western”?

I love that you have the question mark at the end — a “sci-fi Western”?

Those things don’t necessarily go together!

No, I like that. It’s just like looking at Jessica Bruder’s book, and to really see behind the pages, to discover the meanings behind each page and the essence of it. I’m a huge fan of the book. And I wanted to see what essence I can find [in “Dracula”], and then be able to reimagine this really beloved character I love so much.

“Beloved character”? Interesting.

I like complicated characters.

So you love the book “Dracula”?

That was a very important book for me. Immortality is something that I started exploring on “Eternals,” but is something I want to question and understand.
