Dragon Quest Heroes

Boss Battles Are Where Dragon Quest Heroes Shines. November 10, 2015 . 6:00pm

Just about every boss in Dragon Quest Heroes has an engaging hook, and I was constantly looking forward to the next one.

[

When it comes to the action genre, the Warriors games are usually more well-known for catharsis than deep mechanics. To an extent, that’s true with Dragon Quest Heroes too. But in my time playing the game, some battles surprised me as being genuinely clever. Those moments were mostly during the boss battles, and that’s where Dragon Quest Heroes really stand out to me.

One of the first bosses you take on is a giant trying to destroy a city you’re in. This guy is huge, blue, and has a giant club that does tons of damage. You also can’t just hit him like a normal boss; his weak spot is up on his head. If you try to take him on at ground level, you’ll do little damage and become open to a club in the face. The worst part is, he’s not particularly interested in you: he’s slowly lumbering his way towards something you need to protect on the opposite side of town.

The giant impressed me because of the scale and tension involved in his fight more than anything. He’s one of the first bosses, so he’s fairly easy to figure out: you need to hit him with ranged spells or do enough damage to his legs to make him stagger. If he falls down, his head is open season. The real threat comes from executing on that strategy before he reaches the other side of town and causes you to fail the mission. It was a close call for me: he was only a few steps away when I finally brought him down.

Some bosses do make things more complicated, however. Later on, you have to face a tag-team duo of a large bird and even larger troll. The troll is reminiscent of the giant boss, give or take a few feet shorter. He’s slow and it’s easy to dodge his attacks, and if it was just him then the battle would be trivial. However, if you go for the troll first you’ll quickly find out that it’s a bad idea: the bird will continually heal the troll faster than you’re able to do damage.

The battle then becomes about taking out the bird as fast as you can. But it’s not as simple as just whacking it to death. The bird flies all around the stage and likes to cover itself up in a magical barrier, making it temporarily invincible. Just jumping and swiping at it really isn’t the best approach. Instead, there’s arrow shooting machines littered throughout the area that you can commandeer to shoot the dastardly bird in the face.

Of course, there’s another layer to the fight, too. If you can aim at the bird in peace then the fight will go smoothly, but while shooting you’re completely vulnerable to everything around you. There are dozens of smaller enemies around to help out the troll, and if you get surrounded then you’ll get into real trouble.

I ended up having to do a lot of balancing between thinning the minor enemies and shooting the bird. Constantly having to maintain sections of the battlefield feels very much like a Warriors game, and having that aspect balanced with looking for openings to shoot the bird boss felt genuinely exciting. Finally depleting the annoying bird’s health bar and getting to go one-on-one with the troll was a real accomplishment that caused me to celebrate before the battle was even over. I probably celebrated a little too early, as I ended up getting lazy on my dodges and got my character killed. Thankfully, I had quite a few revival items in stock.

Just about every boss in Dragon Quest Heroes has a similarly engaging hook, and I was constantly looking forward to the next one. Their uniqueness actually goes a long way in making the game feel like a genuine RPG, too, hailing back to bosses requiring specific strategies or set ups to overcome. I was inspired to keep playing even after the millionth “protect X from the enemies” mission just because I knew a cool boss was right around the corner to make things interesting, and that’s really one of the best possible compliments I can give.

Steam Will See Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe And The Blight Below. November 12, 2015 . 10:30am

Valve’s Steam client is currently advertising a Windows PC port of Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below.

Square Enix has begun advertising a Windows PC port of Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below. Developed by Omega Force, it is an action game where players follow an original character aided by familiar faces from the Dragon Quest universe as they attempt to subdue monsters enraged by an unusual mist and save the world.

The Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below advertisement appears when the Steam client is run on a PC. In my case, it was the third of seven Update News items to appear. It says that it is possible to pre-purchase immediately, but the product page is not immediately available. As such, a price point and release date are also currently unknown.

This marks the continuation of a Square Enix trend, as the company also ported the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and Final Fantasy Type-0 HD to Windows PCs.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree’s Woe and the Blight Below
is immediately available for the PlayStation 4.

Dragon Quest Heroes II details town, fields

Published 12 hours ago. 52 comments.

Make use of Zebion's various facilities.

Square Enix has released new Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy’s End details and screenshots, introducing the game’s castle town of Zebion and vast fields.
If you missed it, most of this information was covered in last week’s Niconico broadcast.
Get the information below.
■ Towns and Fields
Dragon Quest Heroes II is an action RPG where players control various unique characters and fight through a great war. You’ll prepare for your adventure in town, which acts as your base,

travel through various fields and dungeons while heading towards your destination, and defeat the formidable enemies that await you to progress the story.

(1) Prepare in Town
DQH2_02-29-16_001.jpg

Talk with the people in town, gather information, and determine your next objective. Utilize a variety of facilities, including equipment and organizational establishments,
to prepare for the fields and dungeons.

(2) Explore Fields and Dungeons

DQH2_02-29-16_002.jpg

Explore the fields and dungeons while heading towards your destination. Collecting items and defeating monsters to stack up experience points are also important.

(3) Defeat Formidable Enemies

DQH2_02-29-16_003.jpg

Formidable enemies sometimes await at your destination. Defeat the enemy and complete your objective to progress the story.

■ The Facilities of Zebion

The suzerain state of Zebion, which rules all seven countries of Dragon Quest Heroes II, is the base of your adventure. Take advantage of its various facilities before heading out into the fields and dungeons. These include the church, weapon shop, armor-selling orb shop, accessory-strengthening alchemy pot, and other familiar facilities, as well as a special facilities where curious characters appear.

DQH2_02-29-16_004.jpg

You can organize your party at Luida’s Bar. You’ll gain new companions as you progress through the story,
whom you can switch in and out of your party to control and fight alongside.

DQH2_02-29-16_005.jpg

Rikka’s Inn acts as the multiplayer reception desk. What kind of companions will you meet, and what kind of battles await?

DQH2_02-29-16_006.jpg

■ Vast Fields

Outsdie of town are feature-rich fields ranging from grasslands to deserts and so on that players can freely travel between. Monsters loiter these fields, which will become the stage of fierce battles.

You’ll also find treasure chests and items, as well as dungeon entrances, so be sure to search every nook and corner of the map.
The area around Orenka is filled with lushly green grasslands.

The monsters that appear here are less dangerous compared to others you’ll face, including slimes and slime knights.

DQH2_02-29-16_007.jpg

The area around Gywall,

the protagonists’ home country, is a desert. It’s a hot and dry environment, but a number of monsters inhabit it.

DQH2_02-29-16_008.jpg

With Waystones, which will unlock as you advance the story,
you’ll be able to instantly move between locations.

DQH2_02-29-16_009.jpg

By examining shining spots,
you can obtain a variety of items. Sometimes, treasure chests and pots will also be placed.http://gematsu.com/tag/screenshots

DQH2_02-29-16_010.jpg

In addition to your surrounding terrain,
the map also lets you check your location, monster locations, and your next objective.

Formidable enemies and traps await players in the dungeon.

Dragon Quest Heroes II details class changes, ability acquisition, multiplayer, and more

Published 12 hours ago. 37 comments.

Change classes to create your own hero.

Square Enix has released new Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy’s End details and screenshots, introducing the game’s class changes, how to acquire new abilities, multiplayer, and more.
Get the information below.
■ Gain XP, level up, and acquire various skills!

The protagonists will gain experience as they battle and defeat enemies, and parameters such as their offensive and defensive power will increase. Additionally, you’ll acquire “Skill Points” when you level up, which can be used to learn a variety of skills.

DQH2_03-09-16_001.jpg

There are a number of formidable foes, such as the Red Balzack (Onikonbou). Use all your power to defeat them!

DQH2_03-09-16_002.jpg

Gain XP and level up! In addition to increasing your parameters, you’ll also acquire Skill Points.

DQH2_03-09-16_003.jpg

You can set the magic and skills you earn in the Skill Menu. These consist not only of powerful attacks, but also recovery and support skills.

DQH2_03-09-16_004.jpg

Attack enemies with the Zap magic attack! By mastering skills, you can go into battle against formidable enemies better prepared.

■ Build up tension!

By attacking the enemy, or receiving attacks from the enemy, your Tension will build up. The Tension gauge is represented on the left side of the character’s portrait. When it’s full, you can enter High Tension mode to power up your character and unleash a special attack.

DQH2_03-09-16_005.jpg

When you enter High Tension, your body will glow in a pink aura.

DQH2_03-09-16_006.jpg

Razel’s special attack, “Giga Break,” basks his sword in the power of thunder and wipes out surrounding enemies.

DQH2_03-09-16_007.jpg

Teresia’s special attack, “Giga Slash,” fires lightning from her sword and clean sweeps surrounding enemies.

■ Use weapons to increase your Proficiency and awaken new powers!

By damaging the enemy, the “Proficiency” of your equipped weapon class will increase. When Proficiency increases, different from the Skill Points you acquire, you can learn the magic, skills, and special effects available when a weapon of that class is equipped.

DQH2_03-09-16_008.jpg

In the castle town of Zebion, you’ll find an instructor who can check your Proficiency. If your weapon’s Proficiency is high enough, you can learn new magic, skills, and effects.

DQH2_03-09-16_009.jpg

Here we see Razel has learned the dual swords weapon skill “Freeze Blade.” In the same way as magic and skills learned through Skill Points, Freeze Blade can be set for use during battle in the Skill Menu.

■ Change classes to create your own hero!

The protagonists, different from the other heroes, have a special ability. They can both change their class and the types of weapons they use. Each class has attribute values and learnable skills, as well as different weapons that can be equipped and significant differences in how they fight. You can be a powerful, sword-wielding Warrior; or you can be a Priest who heals their allies; create your own kind of hero.

DQH2_03-09-16_010.jpg

Razel and Teresia start with the “Warrior” class and can be equipped with dual swords, single-handed swords, and hatchets.

DQH2_03-09-16_011.jpg

The class change office can be found in the castle town of Zebion. Since the level and Skill Points for each class is separate, you’ll need to raise XP again for each new class.

DQH2_03-09-16_012.jpg

The Priest class can be equipped with sticks, spears, and staffs.
■ Assemble with friends in multiplayer!
Dragon Quest Heroes II crosses the platform boundary when it comes to multiplayer. PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita users can all play online together. Additionally, because the game supports cross-save, you share save data across all three platforms. Play PlayStation 4 multiplayer on the big screen at home, and then take it on the go with PS Vita.
Players can take on story battles with a friend via “Cooperative Play,” as well as challenge formidable enemies in the “Space-Time Labyrinth” dungeon with up to four people.

DQH2_03-09-16_013.jpg

You can start your adventure in the Space-Time Labyrinth by talking to Rikka at the Rikka’s Inn multiplayer reception desk.

DQH2_03-09-16_014.jpg

Gather your friends nearby and online to take on the labyrinth. What kind of formidable enemies await in its depths?

DQH2_03-09-16_015.jpg

Not only will formidable enemies appear, but so will a number of metal slimes.

■ Torneko (voiced by Chafurin) from Dragon Quest IV

DQH2_04-13-16_001a.jpg

An arms merchant who knows every weapon across all times and places. He dreams of being successful in life and running the best weapons shop in the world, and leaves his family to go on a journey.

If he’s pursuing a legendary weapon, even in an endlessly deep dungeon, and even in a strange new world, he is a man of action that will fearlessly jump in.

If It’s for Legendary Weapons, He’ll Go as Far as Another World!

Torneko wanders the world seeking legendary weapons. Even in this game, he wanders into another world in the middle of a weapon hunting journey. You would expect that he joins the protagonists in order to find a way back to his original world, but with his arrival in Zebion, he also works hard in search of rare goods. While he is worried about the family he left behind back home, he is excited about the adventure that awaits him in a different world, as he through and through loves adventure.

DQH2_04-13-16_001.jpg

Although troubled and in an unknown world, Torneko is still excited by the anticipation of adventure.

DQH2_04-13-16_002.jpg

Adventure always comes with accidents. Torneko has become accustomed to being thrown in jail.

Torneko Carries Handy Tools in His Bag

Torneko fights using the handy tools he’s collected, showing his true worth as a weapons dealer. By making use of the tools at his disposal, Torneko is an all-purpose fighter able to easily handle melee attacks, long distance attacks, and recovery.

DQH2_04-13-16_003.jpg

Torneko’s “Iron Ball of Destruction” throws down a huge iron ball ahead of him.

DQH2_04-13-16_004.jpg

With his “Recovery Stone,” Torneko can greatly recover all of his allies’ HP.

DQH2_04-13-16_005.jpg

Using his “Crossbow,” Torneko can fire consecutive arrows at air-based enemies.

DQH2_04-13-16_006.jpg

Torneko’s special move is “Arakure Yobi,” which sees soldiers appear out of nowhere to take revenge on the enemy.
