    The rules:
This is one of four threads containing matches.
The threads will be in use for 10 days. Days 1-4 are strictly setup time for owners to plead their cases, tell us their team’s strategies, breakdown the match ups, and do whatever else they can/want to do to try and convince you that their team would pull out a victory. Please, let the owners do this on their own with no help from you, the fan. Owners can debate only when their opponenet has finished posting their writeup.

On Day 5 I will post and tell everyone that voting may begin. Only after doing so will voting start. Any votes cast before I open voting will not count.

Look over the matchups and read the owners strategies and take into consideration how in-character each character is. Afterwards, use your best judgment to decide who you think has the best chance to win the match up. (Note: The length of a writeup is up to the owner. Do not punish owners just for having a shorter writeup.)

To vote, post the team names you think will prevail in each match. Remember, to vote for each match up or your vote will not count! The teams with the highest vote total at the end of the 7th day will get a W while the other will get an L. (Equal votes will result in a tie.)

    WEEK 5 LINE-UP INFO

    Quasar (Wendell Vaughn) – (MU):
    Continuity: 616
Powers and skills: Possesses the Quantum Bands which allow him to control all forms of energy and generate constructs of any shape he concentrates on including force fields, giant weapons, and a suit of protective armor (his quantum armor). He can also fly and can use the bands to teleport by creating portals into the quantum zone, the source of the quantum bands power. His Quantum Bands also guard his mind against psychic control. While in possession of the Quantum Bands Quasar can fly at faster then light speed. Has had basic espionage training through S.H.I.E.L.D. and has had extensive hand-to-hand combat training through both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America.
    Resources: None.

Thor (Thor Odinson/Donald Blake) – (MU):
    Continuity: 616
Powers and skills: Thor's principal weapon is the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, one of the most formidable weapons known to man or god. Among the hammer's various enchantments are its indestructibility and the ability to summon all the elements of storm (wind, rain, thunder, and lightning). His hammer can be thrown both as a means of flight, and as a weapon that always returns to its wielder's hand. Thor's superhuman strength is matched with an immunity to all human diseases, superhuman speed, agility, and simulated flight when he hurls his enchanted hammer Mjolnir.
    Resources: None.

Steel (John Henry Irons) – (DM):
    Continuity: Post-Infinite Crisis New Earth
Powers and skills: Steel is an extraordinary inventor and engineer, and wears a suit of powered armor which grants him flight, super strength and endurance. A large hammer is also a key weapon in the suit's arsenal. His most current "smart hammer" hits harder the farther it is thrown, is capable of independent flight, and has an onboard computer guidance and analysis system capable of detecting a target's stress points.
    Resources: JLA files.

    Baron Helmut Zemo – (MR):
    Continuity: 616
Powers and skills: He is a gifted scientist. Though not an inventive genius, he is a capable engineer and a talented problem-solver, highly adept at understanding, modifying, and manipulating existing technologies. He is a fine marksman with handguns and an expert swordsman. He sometimes wears circuitry in his hood guarding against psychic assault, and occasionally uses weapons or traps incorporating his father's Adhesive X, which forms an unbreakable bond with any substance unless it is subjected to a special solvent.
    Resources: Personal files.

Karate Kid (Val Armorr) – (DR):
Continuity: Post-Infinite Crisis New Earth/Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths
Powers and skills: Karate Kid is the master of every form of martial arts to have been developed up to the 30th Century. He possesses the ability to sense the weakest spot in an object and his skill in hand-to-hand combat is seemingly superhuman, allowing him to simulate super-strength blows. He can severely damage extremely hard and strong materials — metals, stone, etc. — with a single blow. Karate Kid is also skilled with melee weapons, though he dislikes using them and rarely needs to use them.
Karate Kid's training included mental discipline which makes him more resistant to mind control.
    Resources: None.

TEAM ALPHA WOLF SQUADRON VS. THE LAST CHANCERS
    WEEK 5 LINE-UP PREPERATION

The members of Team Alpha Wolf Squadron are teleported into the courtyard of Stryker’s Island. Quasar and the Karate Kid are already familiar with the competition, and fill in Thor, Zemo and Steel. Thor would not react terribly well to having to team with Zemo, but Quasar would be able to convince Thor that a temporary alliance is necessary. Steel, similarly accepting his situation, recognizes the location, having contributed to its security, and is able to lead the team to its central control station.

Then, images of the team’s opponents, alongside descriptions, appear via Quasar’s Quantum Bands. The only opponent the team would be unfamiliar with is Husk, but enough can be distilled from the description of his powers. On the other hand, the opposing team will know nothing of Baron Zemo and the Karate Kid and little of the others except Thor.

With almost a full day left, the team split up and prepare. Steel and Zemo work on the prison’s systems, prepping them to use against the opposing team. This should be no trouble, considering its Steel’s own technology. Thor and Karate Kid spar while Quasar inspects the prison, getting a sense of the location. There’s not much else to do beyond that, so it’s just waiting till the day is up.

TEAM ALPHA WOLF SQUADRON VS. THE LAST CHANCERS
    WEEK 5 LINE-UP THE FIGHT

The moment the battle starts, the Last Chancers break up. Both the Hulk and the General are arrogant enough to think they can fight this battle on their own. Ghost Rider, Wolverine and Husk would be very hesitant in following either of these two figures, so beyond a quick ‘who fights who’ strategizing, there’s not a lot of teamwork going on in that team. Team Alpha Wolf Squadron is decidedly more structured, but split up to effectively counter the Last Chancers. They are kept in contact by communicators created by Steel.

The first two characters that need to be dealt with are the Hulk and the General, easily the most dangerous members of the opposing team. Thor slams into the Hulk immediately and they battle on the courtyard. Similarly, Quasar moves for the General, coming at him with full force and blasting him out of the prison into the waters surrounding it.

Although the Hulk and the General might well be the most important fights, we turn our eyes first to another battle. The Karate Kid will be fighting Wolverine and Husk, who are likely to stick together. Husk is still rather inexperienced and clings to Wolverine, someone she holds in high regard. So, yes, it’s Val taking on the two of them, while Zemo and Steel focus on the others.

Karate Kid vs. Wolverine and Husk
Wolverine and Husk are running through the halls, making their way to the control room. Quite suddenly, the Karate Kid appears before them. Wolverine brings out the claws. Husk peels away her skin, revealing a steel skin. Karate Kid readies his stance as Wolverine tells Husk to stay back while he engages the opponent. Husk reluctantly agrees as Wolverine charges forward, claws first.

To Wolverine’s surprise, his claws do not connect. Val parries the assault, grabbing one of Wolverine’s outstretched hands and using the momentum to fling him away against a wall. Naturally, Husk now engages Karate Kid herself. An untrained fighter, Husk leaves herself open to attack as Karate Kid focuses and strikes at the nerve endings in Husk’s right arm, which still exist beneath her steel skin. She grips her arm in pain. She’s lucky though, as Karate Kid has shown the ability to break steel beams with a single blow.

Wolverine snarls and charges for the Karate Kid again, but in a quick Judo manoeuvre, Val falls to the ground, lifting his feet to Wolverine’s abdomen and throws him into the air, into a wall again. Meanwhile, Husk peels away her skin, her right arm still useless, revealing a new rubbery form, which grants her a form of super speed. She charges for Karate Kid, who reacts instantly, avoiding her and delivering a devastating blow to her neck. She is sent flying into Wolverine, who has just gotten up again.

Wolverine is quite angry by now, remarking that “we’re being played,” as he stands up and sheathes his claws. He tells Husk to go find the others and help them while he takes care of “Daniel-san.” Husk reluctantly agrees, using her super speed to leave the battle. It’s just the Karate Kid vs. Wolverine now and both assume their stances.

Husk races onto the courtyard, where her teammate Ghost Rider battles Steel. She deduces from the large hole in one of the courtyard walls that the Hulk and Thor have taken their battle into the prison and the sounds of their battle can be heard across the prison. She can also hear the General yelling a variety of profanities. Figuring it’s best to keep out of those two fights, Husk about to aid Ghost Rider in his battle when a bullet ricochets from her rubbery skin. She turns to find Baron Zemo, readying his sword.

    Baron Zemo vs. Husk
Husk charges at Baron Zemo, who has now holstered his gun and outstretches his sword. The blade bounces off the rubber harmlessly when the two connect and Husk brings Zemo down to the ground. She smiles, thinking she’s taken her opponent down. What she can’t see is that, under the mask, Zemo is smiling as well. Reaching into his belt, Zemo grabs a small container and quickly smashes it into Husk’s face. The effect is instant as her face freezes.

During prep-time, Zemo used the prison’s resources to make a flashfreeze capsule similar to what was used to take down Plastic Man in “Tower of Babel”. He shot her first to determine which skin she had taken on. The majority of her skins would have been effected by the flash freezing either way though. Using Husk’s shock at having her face frozen to his advantage, Zemo throws her off him and takes out his gun. Now straddling Husk, Zemo points the gun at her face, his other hand at her throat.

“I suggest you surrender and move as little as you can. You’ll find your face breaks quite easily when the proper force is applied to its brittle form. Will you surrender or will I be forced to end your long life here? Nod to surrender.”

Zemo relinquishes his hold on her throat and unable to speak, Husk nods slowly. Holstering the gun once more, Zemo stands up, telling Husk to find a safe place before he takes off to help his team. Husk is not one to be easily frightened, but her encounter with Zemo leaves her positively terrified as she slowly moves to the edge of the courtyard, making sure to avoid any further battle. She would cry if she could.

Meanwhile, another battle is taking place in the courtyard:
    Steel vs. Ghost Rider
After engaging in roundabout fisticuffs for a while the two engage hand-to-hand. Ghost Rider’s motorcycle has been thrown to the side and Steel’s hammer is similarly away from the fight. The two warriors’ hands are locked, the ground shaking around them. Ghost Rider goes in for the Penance Stare, but the stare meets shielded eyes.

The Rider feels himself weakening under Steel’s superior grip and calls upon his cycle, who rams into Steel, knocking him away. Ghost Rider moves towards Steel with his chain, when Steel utters the word “return”. At that command, Steel’s smart hammer returns from his trajectory around the world, hitting Ghost Rider square in the back, knocking him to the ground, before the hammer returns to Steel’s hand.

Ghost Rider gets up, but is faced again with Steel’s hammer, now hitting him directly in the face. Grabbing the chain, Steel pulls Ghost Rider towards him, delivering another blow to the Rider’s body with his hammer. The blow is so powerful that the Rider loses grip of the chain and flies away, skidding along the floor. As he sits slumped against the wall, the fiery skull makes place for the unconscious face of Daniel Ketch.

After their battles, Baron Zemo and Steel meet, discussing their next step. Thor and the Hulk are fighting somewhere in the prison compound and so are the Karate Kid and Wolverine. Neither would particularly appreciate interference and Zemo and Steel decide that it’d be best to aid Quasar, who is still fighting the General outside the prison.

Quasar, Baron Zemo and Steel vs. the General
By the time Zemo and Steel arrive, Quasar has been fighting the General for quite a while. Every forcefield Quasar creates, the General punches through. From every blast, the General’s body regenerates. The General is truly unstoppable, and Quasar is starting to feel the strain of the battle upon him. He won’t be able to last much longer.

Fortunately, Quasar gets a chance to breathe when Steel’s hammer hits the General straight in the face. Baron Zemo tries one of the flash freeze capsules on the General, but Eiling just laughs it off as he breaks the ice, his body already dealing with the damage. While Baron Zemo tries his best to distract the General, Steel talks strategy with Quasar. The only way the General has ever been beaten is by teleporting him away.

Fearlessly, Quasar knows what must be done and attacks the General head on. The General laughs as Quasar’s hands try to reach around the General’s neck. A fatal mistake, as Quasar is able to touch the General and in a blinding light, he and the General are gone. They’ve teleported away to the DC Universe’s version of the Quantum zone, from which it’s doubtful either can return. Quasar has valiantly sacrificed himself to make sure the General never finds his way back to reality.

Across the prison, Wolverine is facing off against the Karate Kid:
Karate Kid (and Steel) vs. Wolverine
“So you mastered every martial art known to man, eh kid?”
    “And a few more.”

Wolverine drops the brawler tactics and focuses on his martial arts training. However, for every technique Wolverine employs, the Karate Kid knows its counter. To every attack, the Kid has an answer. Even though he employs only a little of his knowledge, the Karate Kid amazes Wolverine at every turn. While Wolverine can’t get a good hit in, Karate Kid’s blows continually connect, hitting Wolverine’s on all his vulnerable spots: the ligaments between arm and hand, the neck and a variety of other places not protected by the adamantium that lines Wolverine’s skeleton.

The only thing keeping Wolverine on his feet is his healing factor, but even with it, Wolverine is feeling the strain of this battle. Eventually, the Karate Kid has just hit about every nerve in Wolverine’s body with blows that would fell an ordinary man. He won’t be taking down Wolverine with his standard techniques. Enhancing his strength and speed by channelling his ki, the Karate Kid puts all he has into a series of blows that end up doing the trick. Wolverine is down, but the Kid is spent.

There’s one match we haven’t discussed yet:
    Thor vs. Hulk
I find it hard to write how this battle would go down. These two have met a few times already over their long careers and writing a battle between them is always tough. Arguably, for the first time ever, these two are finally fighting each other when at their respective peaks. It makes deciding who the winner is extra tough.

By now the prison is pretty much destroyed, these two punching into each other with blows that shake the ground around them. In close combat, the hammer Mjolnir only gives Thor a small advantage. As the Hulk grows madder though, he’s getting an edge on Thor, and is slowly starting to bring him down.

The remaining members of Team Alpha Wolf Squadron arrive on the scene, urging Thor to really give it his all with Mjolnir. Of course, Thor refuses, unwilling to give into the Hulk. While Zemo is willing to honour that, Steel isn’t, and directly interferes, sending his smart hammer crashing into the Hulk. Although he’s angry at his comrade, Thor finally agrees to use Mjolnir effectively, considering the fight a loss now that there’s been interference.

A single concentrated lightning bolt has taken down the Hulk before, and now Thor unleashes again, calling down the rain, the thunder and the lightning. Although the Hulk’s anger gives him some added endurance, he can’t withstand the assault for long, and with the green behemoth down, Team Alpha Wolf Squadron wins.

    WINNERS=TEAM ALPHA WOLF SQUADRON

    Prep-time

    Location – Stryker’s Island

The 5 warriors land on Stryker’s Island in a large chamber. Gorilla Grodd’s instant reaction is to start attacking. He tries to mind blast Batman but it fails.

Gorilla Grodd – ‘What is wrong with my ability? Why are you begging for your life human?’

Batman – ‘Because we’re on Stryker’s Island. Every room negates the powers of the occupant.’

Brian grabs Grodd and slams him against the wall.

Brian – ‘You’re going to play by our rules Gorilla. Whether you like it or not.’

Grodd, after a few moments of psychological persuasion from Batman, agrees to co-operate. After having fought in a battle with them previously he knew he would have to work with them anyway. He just wanted to try and take down Batman.

Batman observes the constructs of the room and makes his way through to the main control room. He flicks switches to activate surveillance systems and to animate inactive cells. As he scans the monitors he notices there is still tech lying around the complex. He picks up what looks like a collar. Pulling a small toolkit from his belt he begins to work on fixing it.

They see who their opponents are and (after reading the descriptions earlier in the week on the DTL Discussion/Transaction pages) know what they are capable of.

They decide with this battle that pairing up is the best option to win their battle. They have a plan and they intend on using it.

Brian’s knowledge of mutants as well as Juggernauts means Josef Huber will be easy enough to deal with. Brian has also had dealings with Thor before as has Captain America so their knowledge will make fighting that battle somewhat easier. Captain America has battled along side the Fantastic Four and so will have extensive knowledge of their abilities which he can pass onto Batman and Grodd to take out Super Skrull. Batman has met the One Million version before but he will probably call on Grodd to help with this one. And as for Coronary, Juggernaut and Grodd can handle this one once Huber is down.

So as the facility is wired up and activated everyone is aware of who they have to battle and how they are going to handle such feats.

All that is left is to wait.

    To Be Continued…

    Battles

    Location – Stryker’s Island

    Two’s Company, Three’s A Crowd

Captain Britain and Juggernaut vs. Josef Huber

The battles begin as the opponents are brought into the Island complex. Juggernaut and Captain Britain are first to make their moves. They head straight for Josef Huber, who at this time is mind screening his entire team making any psychic attacks from Grodd at this time almost impossible.

The main plan for this battle is to get Huber into one of the depowering chambers. Initially this battle is not going to be easy as Huber will try long range attacks to keep Juggernaut and Brian at bay. Blast from his Crimson Eye will hardly affect Juggernaut; however it may take Brian out of the air if he is in flight.

Whilst Brian’s main aim is to get to Huber, Juggernaut will just keep coming until he is on top of Huber which is when his phasing will come into play. He will also try to manipulate the metal on Juggernauts helmet to be able to use telepathy on Cain. He will also phase his body to prevent Cain or Brian from getting a touch on him. This is folly though as the blade that Brian wields is able to affect phased beings (considering the blade is more mystical and powerful than the Ebony Blade which can affect phased beings).

Brian will take a swing at Huber if only to show him how vulnerable he is. The blade nicks his arm drawing blood, it heals itself instantly but he still doesn’t want to risk getting sliced up.

Huber opts for another plan and creates a vacuum of sand and tries to envelop both the non-mutants in it. Unfortunately the shields they both have protect them and they walk out of the twister unharmed.

Huber decides to use his metal body to take on Brian and Juggernaut but his strength levels aren’t even close to comparison to either and he soon falls to the blow of Juggernaut. Brian, moving at the speed of sound, grabs Huber and throws him into a containment chamber, which is sealed by Batman at the controls.

His powers instantly disappear and the Psychic block that was protecting his team falls, giving Grodd his opening.

Batman and Gorilla Grodd vs. Batman (One Million)

Although Batman 1M maybe a higher level of intellect than 21st Century Bruce, he still has his work cut out for him. At first Batman and Grodd will toy with him to see how far they can push him, Bruce will know he doesn’t want to hang around too long in this battle as 1M’s team mates could turn up and assist so its just a case of Batman wearing him down to a point where he’s still enough for Grodd to get his hands on him and really put some hurt on his mind. Rendering 1M unconscious makes this battle over.

Captain America and Captain Britain vs. Super Skrull

Skrull will initially use his invisibility to try and get the drop on Cap A and Cap B, but with Brian’s ability to see through invisibility and illusions he locates Skrull with ease. Dropping his cover he immediately throws an attack at Cap B. Brian is engulfed in flames, but to no gain.

Cap A launches his shield at Skrull but it just bounces of his rubber like form. He solidifies his fist and slams into Steve and pins him against a wall. Brian punches Skrull in the face lowering both his grip on Steve and his guard.

The impact sends him crashing to the floors of the corridor. Skrull erects a shield to protect him whilst he gathers his bearings; however Brian cuts through the shield and beings another assault on Skrull. Most of the blows are parried with his rubber complexion however he can’t keep switching from rubber to rock to attack back without being hit. Brian pummels Skrull whilst Steve launches his shield in the corridor. It ricochets off all the walls hitting Skrull in the head. The blow knocks him off balance and it’s just a matter of time before the beating that he receives from Steve and Brian take him out of the battle.

Captain America and Gorilla Grodd vs. Coronary

This battle is over pretty quickly now that Huber’s protective mind screen is dropped. Coronary will know Captain America through his teamings with Namorita and will know what he’s capable of. Knowing full well that his shield is indestructible and he is somewhat breakable he will go for Cap first. Using his psionic ability he will take out Caps muscles preventing him from throwing his shield. This will be Grodd’s opening and he will attack with a powerful mind blast, rendering him unconscious.

Juggernaut, Captain Britain, Captain America, Batman and Gorilla Grodd vs. Thor (Power Gem)

This battle will be of epic proportions. There is already a plan put in motion by Batman and Captain America. All they need is for the other 3 to control Thor long enough to execute it.

Gorilla Grodd will be the first to strike. He will launch himself at Thor only to be taken out by a mere blow to the head. Juggernaut will step up next. Thor will meet him in locked hands as the two will try to out power the other. Using the energy from the Power Gem he will force Juggernaut back. Brian will have ago next.

All the while Cap A and Batman will be in waiting for Thor to make his fateful error. And it is against Juggernaut that he does this. He launches Mjolnir at Juggernaut. The hammer throws Cain through four walls before hitting the floor.

This is when Cap will move. He runs and knowing that he is worthy to wield the hammer, he will pick it up, preventing the mystical weapon from returning to Thor. Juggernaut will charge towards Thor and knock him to the floor. Both will wrestle one another As Brian takes the collar repaired by Batman earlier and place it around Thor’s neck at great speed.

While still having the Power Gem Thor is still at a high level strength but he doesn’t have any control of the gems energy powers or any control over the skies. So now Thor, Batman and Cap B (Cap A is still holding onto the hammer and doesn’t want to risk it getting back to Thor) all attack a now weaker Thor. Brian having gone toe to toe with Thor before is the first to attack. He is able to give Thor a beating and whilst not having his shield the first time, he is able to take quite a beating too, but he doesn’t have to for long as Batman and Juggernaut come to help out. Batman gets a few well placed batarangs off but falls short in the strength department and soon finds himself the other side of the complex imbedded in a wall.

It’s up to Juggernaut and Cap B now to pile on the hurt until Thor eventually breaks under the pressure.

As a result the HOTNA win.

I think Ghost Rider would have held up better to Steel. But that's the only real problem I have with the good writeup.

I liked the idea of Cap taking Mjolnir. I don't know if it's actually possible, but it at least sounds reasonable. And it would take away one of Thor's big weapons.

Well i know he has been worthy of holding it and the weapon does only return if left abandoned and seen as it was being held i think its plausible
