Was gonna see John Wick last night but noticed this was playing at 8pm so I said **** it and saw this instead.
Overall, I wouldn't call this a bad movie, but it's weird. For the first chunk of the movie, it felt like watching an extended Funny or Die/SNL video where Daniels and Carrey are almost impersonating themselves and their old characters. Almost seems more cheaply made than the original. It was weird and awkward to watch at first, but once you settle into it and the story gets moving, things start to feel more natural and I let go of that notion.
The movie is funny throughout, with some truly uproarious moments and some real stinker jokes that totally bomb. The whole movie is hit or miss, but many more bits "miss" than they did in the original. Jim Carrey is still fantastic and completely steals the show. All of the best moments are from him. Just like in the original, it's the little things he does that kill.
Obviously, the original has become such a classic that this was never going to surpass or match it's greatness. Everyone knows that going into this sequel, I'm sure. This movie follows the exact same formula of the original to a T, although I'm not sure I can name that as a complaint because that's ultimately the "point" of the movie -- that these two guys will never change and will be trapped in their dimwitted limbo forever.
Either way, it was cool to revisit the characters but I can't recommend that anyone needs to run to theaters to see it. I'd classify it as a rental.
