It's NOT World of Warcraft. It IS Warcraft.
World of Warcraft would be a nice title for the sequel.

I was just taking the opportunity to make some jokes at WoW's expense.:p

Time will tell. It could turn out to be pretty cool.

I was actually thinking about starting up my subscription again today.
I think I may.:woot:

Warcraft Movie at BlizzCon 2007!

Today at BlizzCon 2007 we have heard our first solid and interesting information with regards to the Warcraft, or to some, the World of Warcraft Movie. This movie will be big, huge, EPIC even - in fact, Thomas Tull (producer of 300) stated a budget of over $100m would be committed, with a projected 2009 release date. Legendary Pictures are 100% committed to this project, it shall be a “tent-pole”, something to stand next to and say “we did that!” - whilst remaining true to the game and fan base.

The plot for the film will take place approximately a year before the start of World of Warcraft, including races you have played and lands you have wandered in, where lots of plot arcs are melded into a two and a half hour story. The film itself will revolve around a ‘badass’ new hero, with a theme towards conflict and culture - being a War Movie rather than a quest movie, from an Alliance’s perspective.

“It’s actually not like the great adventure. It’s not so much a quest movie. It’s more of a war movie. Well, okay, it’s absolutely a war movie. Cultures grinding up to a horrible moment where it just all spills over and gets out of control. Less of an adventure party quest-type situation. More of an armies building to an inevitable conclusion type situation.”

And w.r.t to the Alliance:

“While my heart lies with the Horde and Thrall’s an interesting character, from a movie making standpoint, a blockbuster movie its a little rough to try and tell it from the perspective of this green looking dude.”

No director or cast have yet been assigned to the project and Tull stated that recognizable actors to play main roles was not a necessity:

“We are starting those conversations. We’re going to be looking for someone of Zak Snyder (300) or Chris Nolan (The Dark Knight, Batman Beings) calibre,”

The not so good news - seems they are aiming for PG-13 content which claims to be a compromise. I personally miss the days of old when action heroes swore blindly.

“I can tell you that this is the one thing about running a studio and making these things that’s hard. You want to not compromise and have the right level of intensity. The story and the director’s vision is what’s ultimately going to dictate that. Personally one of my favorite movies of all time is Lord of the Rings, which has a PG-13 rating.”

The film is still in its scripting process, but Tull stated that they are currently working with something that they are very happy with.

And now for the first piece of concept art of the Teldrassil:

Other Q & A info:

Classes will be in the movie, but can’t give details since still in scripting process, not exactly clear and we don’t know yet, but we want many familiar elements in the movie as possible

What races will be represented? Not very easy to answer considering the timeline we’re talking about, so they are not sure about if the Forsaken have yet joined the Horde But not everyone can be in the spotlight in the first movie anyway

Warcraft has a lot of strong characters, would you consider going back to do another movie on Arthas? I would consider that, sure, but we haven’t talked about what other films might deal with. We have to get the first movie right first before you deal with franchises.

This is based on two or three major moments in the games, so it isn’t radically apart from the continuity, so it really holds together. We want it to taste like the World of Warcraft world. but it’s also really fresh. I understand the fear that you don’t want us to screw up the story, but we will be respectful of the continuity but will hold up as a killer 2 hour movie. It is a little modified.
There’s so much in this world to deal with, so you use that as a jumping off point to tell a kick ass story. They want the players to enjoy the movie experience, if they are too much a slave to the story that won’t be the case. They want to respect the world, but to translate it to the screeen and is great on film.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. Something about it seems just monumental.

Can someone please tell me if this movie will be CGI or live action.

Thanks in advance.

They confirmed that the movie will be live-action with a yet to be determined level of CG environments and effects.

No offense the game was good but i found it hard to get above lvl 30 you have to spend to much time. Also you have to pay to play where as Diablo 2 is free and a much better game just not as good graphics. I mean i would pick better game over better graphics any day.

This could be really awesome. Maybe if it's a big hit, I'll finally get my Diablo movie that I've been hoping for.

Yea this could be one of the best Fantasy films ever if it's done correctly, as long as Blizzard stand right next to Legendary and Warner and help them out with any failures the producers try and make then this could be the best one ever, I would love to See Illidan on screen battling Night elves and taurens and everything that the lore has!!

Imagine something like this:

Best fantasy film ever? Try best film ever. I suppose every film has that potential but not like this one. Just think of all the elements being involved:

1. video game movie adaptation - granted, most have not been good but Resident Evil has shown a glimpse of what is possible. If they put Milla Jovovich in it, at the least.

2. A GOOD Dungeons & Dragons/role playing game adaptation - I know it's not exactly D&D BUT it's close enough.

3. special effects - this movie should be loaded with them and if it is, well, Avatar and every other movie should look out.

4. Background story/foreshadowing - this story of Azeroth has slews of lore history. I'll go so far as to say that only the biblical/Gods and Goddesses stories have more.

5. Global appeal - it's already there. I don't want to get ahead of anything on this but if Transformers 2 can make $836 million this really should make at least $1 billion.

---------------------------------

Now, the bad part, what could ruin all that?

1. it ends up like most all the other video game adaptations.

2. it ends up like the Dungeons & Dragons movies.

3. not incorporating the special effects this movie can utilize so well in an effort to save money.

4. NOT using the great back stories and lore and simply using a band of new characters on a completely new quest.(see #2 on the bad list)

5. The 12 million subscribers is a bit overinflated and none of them have any money or friends to take anyways because they all live in their parents basements.

Best way to avoid these bad things - forget about everything else and just play with it, I'm sure the potential is there for greatness. Now all the filmmakers have to do is tap into that core and untangle it because I am sure it seems a bit confusing to anyone who hasn't followed it religiously since day1 of book 1, and that probably includes most everyone.

Charles Leavitt to Rewrite World of Warcraft
Source: Variety
August 2, 2012

Legendary Pictures is moving forward with their World of Warcraft feature film, bringing aboard screenwriter Charles Leavitt to provide a rewrite. Variety has the news, saying that a search will soon be on for a new director, replacing the formerly attached Sam Raimi.

Blizzard Entertainment's "Warcraft" universe is a rich fantasy setting that revolves around the epic conflict between the opposing forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Since its debut in 1994, "Warcraft" has developed a loyal following across the globe, with several bestselling, award-winning PC games and a range of popular licensed products including novels, action figures, apparel, comic books, board games, and more. "World of Warcraft," Blizzard Entertainment's subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Warcraft universe, is the most popular game of its kind in the world.

Leavitt is best known for films like K-Pax, Blood Diamond and the upcoming The Seventh Son.

There's no announced timeframe for the World of Warcraft film, but the trade notes that a 2014 release is possible if things get moving quickly.

I was just speaking recently in the "next big geeky franchise" thread about how Jones would be one of a small handful of directors ideal to take on adapting video game material.

If Jones can make a good movie with all that studio bureaucracy and interference, then he could do something with World of Warcraft.

If it makes it to filming, he should get the composers who scored the video game on for the live-action film. 'Wrath of the Lich King' has a terrific theme, for example.
