Sci-Fi Dune

Yeah, I think this is breaking Dune into 2 movies on its own. Honestly, it's the best way to do it.

Then Dune Messiah after :o

If it was me, just skip Messiah and Children and go straight to God Emperor but that is a wild dream :)

God Emperor was good. But that was the start of the decline of the series overall. The latter 3 books I never liked as much as the first 3. Then of course, the hundred million spin-offs by his son are all just meh.

At this point we aren't even sure if we will get the second half of the first book. Garbage like Aquaman can earn billions, but something deep and intelligent and made by a capable director...

The only thing I like about splitting the story into two parts - more screen time to flesh out characters and plot.

I liked very much the 4000 years later of God Emperor, it was the conclusion of the Golden Path. I also like Chapterhouse house.

Aren't they filmed back to back ? I could not fathom the first part ending with Paul and Jessica getting to the Fremen and then nothing....

I think I read something that the studio is hesitating to make two movies right away and that at first they will adapt only the first half of the book. I didn't see any updates on that.

This is what several fear will happen, me included. If the movie isn't successful financially we won't get the second half of the story. I wish they'd film them back to back and if the first failed at least they could move the second to HBO or Netflix or something.

It's a valid concern. Dune isn't a mainstream-friendly story. At least in terms of big budget blockbusters. If it were a TV-MA series, that would be another matter.

Yea, Dune isn't Star Wars or Star Trek. It doesn't have as much mainstream appeal.

Oh yeah, we need a solution like that if they really are planning to tell only the first half of the story in the first film.

I think Peter Jackson said if Fellowship of the Ring had failed, the studio would've cut the post-production on Two Towers and release it direct-to-video at the time.

I wonder what they will do art-wise... Judging by production team, those people aren't fans of overblown (in a good sense) or fetishistic. Villeneuve loves clean, simple and clear shapes, it seems. Empty, desolate feel to everything. But he never made anything so removed from our present day.

What's also interesting, if internet info is correct, Villeneuve won't be working with his BR49 crew. Production and costume designers come from his previous works - Arrival, Sicario and Prisoners.

With a rock soundtrack and on-screen captions? Hell yeah!

@OutOfBoose
I trust costumes and sets designers, their craft requires to be able to create anything from any material, given them being good at what they do of course.

Perhaps not the question of trust for me, I'm just REALLY curious where Villeneuve will go with the presentation. Jodorowski's attempt was so bat**** and ultra-violent, that it barely resembled the source. Lynch revels in strange and ghastly stuff. TV series had your typical "sci-fi for TV" design.

I almost can imagine him taking inspiration from brutalist architecture. Giant, angular, heavy constructions set against naval emptiness of Caladan or deserts of Arrakis. Echoing halls.

Maybe set against some renaissance-inspired fashion...

I see. In terms of sets I would like somethings like in the Lynch's movie but bigger in scope. In Dune everything is huge.
Same for the Stillsuit, the design was good even if it laked the cloak.

I disagree. If you want to see over the top, watch Jodorowsky's Dune documentary. THAT was over the top.
In Lynch's movie, the sets were not OTT, the stillsuit were not, the sandworm were not, the reverend mother's dress were not.

Is there even the slightest shred of hope that this won't be a technocolored CGI acid trip?

I really loved Marc Simonetti's concept art. It's has a vividness and scope that's really wonderful. I hope Villeneuve doesn't ground the movie too much.

Simonetti certainly captures the scope, but designs are a bit too Guardians of the Galaxy for my tastes. I hope Villeneuve strives for gritty. But gritty as rooted in realism as much as possible. Not gritty as bland or unimaginative.
