Sci-Fi Dune

I definitely don’t see “CGI acid trip” coming from Villenueve That doesn’t seem his taste at all.
I wonder how melange trip will look...

I disagree. If you want to see over the top, watch Jodorowsky's Dune documentary. THAT was over the top.
In Lynch's movie, the sets were not OTT, the stillsuit were not, the sandworm were not, the reverend mother's dress were not.

Jodorowsky's film, if made, would have made the Lynch film look like a masterpiece. The Jodo film would have just been an surrealistic ego-driven wankfest by an auteur director who isn't widely known for very good reasons.

Exactly. Thank you. Edit : and it was even less faithful than the Lynch's movie by an extremely large margin.

Note : I like Jodorowsky work on the graphic novels, La Caste Des Meta-Barons ( he was one of the scenarists ). His other work is out of reach for my taste.

Lynch's movie is not a good adaptation for sure but it is also not a joke of an adaption.

Jodorowski didn't intend to create a film for mass consumption. As a good auteur, just like Lynch, he's great at indulging his own instincts. I doubt it's a good idea to fault them for that, tbh. Jodor's Dune had potential to become something truly exceptional, but fans of Dune books definitely shouldn't regret the film never happened. Going by the documentary, it was going to be inspired by at best.

Criticizing artists for being rank egoists disappearing up their own buttholes is perfectly valid. Especially in this case. If you've seen the Jodorowsky Dune documentary, it's hilarious that Jodo talks about how terrible the Lynch movie was, and then outlines something which would have been clearly much worse without even a hint of irony or self awareness.

Agree to disagree.

If we're talking about what could have been we cant forget Ridley Scott's Dune which fell apart and resulted in him directing Alien.

Close, but he was offered it after Alien. It was Blade Runner he ultimately directed after his Dune fell apart.

Interesting that David Lean apparently was once interested in making Dune.

Interesting, that it was Dune which brought Ridley Scott to direct Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 which brought Denis Villeneuve to direct Dune

A real Scorsese/Spielberg/Neeson/Day-Lewis shenanigan.

I wonder what they will do art-wise... Judging by production team, those people aren't fans of overblown (in a good sense) or fetishistic. Villeneuve loves clean, simple and clear shapes, it seems. Empty, desolate feel to everything. But he never made anything so removed from our present day.

What's also interesting, if internet info is correct, Villeneuve won't be working with his BR49 crew. Production and costume designers come from his previous works - Arrival, Sicario and Prisoners.

Yeah I was looking through the IMDB page and if correct it's actually rather interesting.
Production Design is credited to Patrice Vermette who, like you say, has worked on Villeneuves previous movies minus BR49. His work is all mostly real world stuff.
But...his set decorator Richard Roberts has done two Star Wars movies, Avengers:AOU and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Likewise there is listed two people as co-costume design.
Jaqueline West, who it doesn't look like he's ever worked with but her work has mostly been based in real world design.
Then we get to her co designer Bob Morgan who typically isn't listed as a designer but costume supervisor. The man has worked on Man Of Steel, X-Men DOFP and BvS, he definitely knows his way around rubber and latex.
My guess is Kaitain is going to be a bit futuristic.
Caladan, old world and regal.
Arrakis, what we expect.
Giedi Prime, ?.

I guess my main desire is Villeneuve doesn't try into sci-fi in a sense of typical sci-fi art. Meaningless weird shapes, hexagon patterns, nanomachines Tony-Stark-style, Star Wars designs, Mech Warrior designs, Jetsons cityscapes and so on...

I want practical and gritty as much as possible. I think Dune would benefit from it, because it feels scientific, even though it's not hard sci-fi most of the time. It would balance extraordinary setting and creatures.

As for Giedi Prime... I don't think they need to invent the wheel. It's an industrial wasteland.

Practical and gritty seems to be Villeneuve’s style based on everything we’ve seen from him so far, so....

The Space Guild will play some role in the adaptation. What kind of starships do you people want to see? Streamlined, greebly, scientific/industrial, organic-looking, something more abstract or incomprehensible?

Per Dune Encyclopedia, the heighliners were globe shaped, not much detail was given as for the aspect of the hull but I would say nothing fancy or otherworldly.

There was nothing gritty about any of the designs around the character of Wallce in BR49.
Minimalist, yes. Brutalist, yes. Gritty, no.

I just don't want to forget that this is 17,000 years in the future and following 100 years of humankind being enslaved by machines. I absolutely agree with the idea of some old world references and designs but I also will be pretty disappointed if we don't get some level of sci-fi fantasy, which no matter how grounded the story of Dune is there are elements that aren't.

No worries, you will get plenty of scifi fantasy, the shield, the orni, the harvesters, the wind trap and so on :)

Villeneuve is no stranger to giant spherical floating objects, so maybe ships will be crafted in similar fashion.

I'm also dying to see Shai-Hulud. With help of modern technology it can look astonishing.

I expect the new Dune to be really minimalistic and grounded, just like Villeneuve's past work. Lots of practical sets with CGI backdrops like the scrapyard and desert scenes in BR2049. I imagine the indoor sets will be quite practical as well. I expect this to look significantly less sci fi than some of you might be hoping for.

Minimalistic and grounded ? Have you read the books ? We have human computers, women who can control you by voice, technology than can fold space and ship steered by people than can predict the safer course by the use of prescience. We have flying ships with wings like insects, The Fremen are brutal and unforgiving people, even their children are killers. The best fighters are as skilled as Neo in the Matrix but for "real".

This is an adaptation though, I wouldn't be surprised if Denis did away with anything he felt wouldn't work to his vision. He hasn't ever done sci fi that has stuff as outlandish as Dune. He's making whatever it was he had in his head when he read the books. We don't know what that is yet cause he hasn't talked much about it. His movies all have his own style. Even BR2049 which could have been very dirty and grimy was remarkably clean and sparse at times. Whether it was the spartan blankness of K's apartment, or the halls of the wallace buildings, even the LAPD building was kind of minimalist in it's design. Not to mention the alien ships in arrival. Now this could be the first movie where Denis just goes nuts and has the designers under his wing go crazy with sci fi design. I expect this to very much feel like a Villeneuve film above all else.

Thing is with this project, i'm hoping they don't have to be as secretive as they were with BR2049. If they teased concept art/costumes/set photos i'd be thrilled. We already know the story so it's not like they have to be super secretive with the production of this movie. The level of secrecy over BR2049 was really something else.

One doesn't exclude another. The stuff you describe doesn't demand overblown visuals. Even Harvesters or flying vessels still can have a very rational approach.
