Sci-Fi Dune

Stellan Skarsgard is a fine actor and can definitely be sinister, and I also think he'd have more of a restrained menace than the cartoonishly over-the-top Baron in the 1980s movie. My only thing is the Baron's booming voice is a big thing in the book IIRC, so I was thinking of an actor with a big commanding voice, while Stellan is always pretty soft-spoken.

As for weight, Gary Oldman is a lot skinnier than Stellan, and the wonders of makeup and padding transformed him into Winston Churchill, so I'm not worried about it.

Happy to see the patriarch of the Skarsgard family in this
Maybe too old, Feyd is around Paul's age who is played by a younger actor than them.
I think Freddie Fox would make a good Feyd although his yet to really breakout outside of the UK. He is a part of the whole Fox family actors dynasty that stretches back to the nineteen thirties.

I think baby Skarsgard has one the faces that’s hard to place in terms of age. That said, if he was cast, it wouldn’t be neither here nor there.

They probably want an older and bigger (sizewise) actor for Feyd, to fit the whole David and Goliath expectation that audience has re: heroic battles.

Both Dave Bautista and Stellan Skarsgård as Rabban and the Baron respectively, are simply genius! I did consider Bautista a while back but after seeing him in Spectre, no doubt can he make the Baron's nephew as menacing as can be. Stellan and much like his fellow countrylady Rebecca Ferguson, I never even considered either. Genius casting indeed!

I'm still sticking with Harry Styles or Tye Sheridan for Feyd. As a member of the Dune Saga page on Facebook, I noticed a post there suggesting Marilyn Manson to play Piter. Others have suggested Count Fenring which could work in his favour too, I suppose. I do like the idea of David Dastmalchian playing Piter too, funnily enough. :)

It's nice to know I can finally get excited about this movie. For awhile there I was concerned it wouldn't be happening due to BR2049's poor box office. Can't wait.

Stellan Skarsgaard is a good actor but he can be hit/miss in these types of roles. Will depend in the interpretation/execution.

My interpretation of the Baron was that he's lugubrious. He's as ugly on the outside as he is on the inside. Just the absolute scum of he universe. But he's a cunning, conniving, ambitious and manipulative piece of scum. He's a very smart piece of scum.

I'm also somewhat mixed on the casting of Baron. I don't think that Stellan can't play a cunning and smart type. It's just I expected someone more showstopping in the role. Someone you'd love to hate. Someone with more screen presence.

Well the main reason I'm ambivalent is because of King Arthur when he played the main Saxon warlord villain. Just sort of grunted and stumbled through that one.

Decent actor but not necessarily my first choice.

Same. I saw Stellan Skarsgard in many films, but I don't recall a truly memorable performance from him.

That being said, I don't want to sound like it's a bad choice. I remain hopeful he will give the role everything he can and production team will give him a great look.

Stellan has played villains in

Ronin
Hunt for Red October
The Glass House
King Arthur
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I wouldn't use King Arthur (I take it we are talking the recent one) as a barometer of decent acting, for any of the cast in that, I am sure he can deliver the goods.

I'm loving the casting for this so far. The Batista one surprised me but I could see it work.

I get your ambivalence but keep in mind we have Villenueve to direct him. Most likely he's going to be effective.

I am so excited for this. This absolutely cannot go wrong, a Dune movie with a visionary auteur director, and a strong cast of some of the best character actors from all corners of the globe. Oh, wait ... :halo:

Yeah, hopefully he can get the best out of everyone.

Skarsgard can be a little bland sometimes but he was good in Good Will Hunting and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so I think it comes down to the role and direction.

The Baron from the Lynch movie was basically human Jabba the Hutt. Swing and a miss in terms of characterization. The Baron from the SyFy miniseries was better, but a little too close to being Rip Taylor for my tastes. I can visualize Stellan's portrayal as having a Shakespearian level of gravity, but in an understated way. Like an evil overweight Ian McKellan.

No Vile is talking about the 2004 Clive Own movie. Skarsgard played the Saxon leader.

I always think it’s funny when someone tries to denigrate someone’s acting ability by bringing up an obscure role they did ages ago. Like when elsewhere someone tried to say Rami Malek is a low quality actor because he was in Night in the Museum and the last Twilight.

I don't see anyone saying he's a bad actor or somewhat unqualified. He's an experienced actor, but I don't think a lot of people are enamored with his past performances - be it good or bad films.
