Or rather he said posthumously, and the person who wrote and transcribed the article misinterpreted the word as "preposterously" which means something different.

I'm not a fan of getting even more subscription services, but HBO Max being released here gave me a pretty good excuse to rewatch this movie again. Still absolutely love it. Still found small things I hadn't noticed on previous viewings.

The more IMAX footage the better, far as I’m concerned. I don’t think I’ve ever spent more time looking at a screen in awe than I did during those IMAX shots. Just magnificent.

I'd prefer the wider IMAX ratio though. The largest format of course makes for a special experience in a real IMAX theater but I don't think 1.43:1 is the nicest format when judged on it's own for composing a picture.

OTOH, you also lose real estate on top and bottom with many widescreen aspect ratios. And there seems to be less fuss about that. So what’s the actual math on these two formats? Does widescreen use significantly more of the 16X9 space?

No, you're not using less real estate with 1.44:1 than with 2.39:1 on a 16:9 TV but rather a bit more. Then there are less wide widescreen aspect ratios that instead use more but I don't think screen real estate is that much of a problem either way.

My only objection is the aesthetic of the more boxy format as I generally like wider (or longer, if it's a vertical painting) composition for art. Especially for epic scenery. To me it's a bit of a trade-off to get the biggest screens as IMAX chose that ratio.

The worst thing is of course when you don't get OAR on the home release since then you're stuck with a composition that's not what they originally made.

I grew up during the widescreen vs pan and scan days. Seeing 2.35 films lose 40% of thei picture on home video, because home tvs were 4:3 and not the same as theaters.

Its just frustrating as hell to see directors and DOPs that also lived and worked through those days when their films were cropped to hell on home video do this **** again with IMAX. Sure there is more care taken in the cropping and the DOP and director are involved in the process now, but its the same end result. Instead of the OAR we get only part of the picture because our tvs aren't a certain native format.

And the IMAX situation is worse than the pan and scan days. In the pan and scan days every theater could play films in OAR. I only needed to drive 30 minutes or less to see any film in OAR. With IMAX the number of venues is much smaller. I have to drive 2 hours to see a film in LieMax. Its 5.5 hours to the nearest true IMAX. It wouldn't be so bad if IMAX would at least loosen up and let Dolby cinemas play IMAX films but they won't.

Just to be clear, I love IMAX. I want films shot for IMAX. I just would love to be able to actually watch IMAX films in OAR.

Well deserved except for Best Editing IMO. They cut a lot of good material out and the movie didn't even have a proper ending. Not to mention, they set up Paul getting his name, but they didn't even include that scene.

The fact that there was even more good material to work with doesn't have much to do with how good the editing of the final product was imo. Either way, really happy to see all the wins, though I think the way the Academy treated this movie and Denis is pretty weird. This does, however, cement Dune even more as a prestige franchise. Good news for everyone involved and also likely means that box office results for the sequel will be somewhat less relevant.

Yeah the abruptness killed the momentum for me. I can’t wait for Part 2 to come out and then view both parts as one whole movie.

Chalamet’s outfit last night was… a choice.

It was wonderful. I love that him, Pattinson, K-Stew, Zendaya, Harry Styles, and Zoe and all doing these classy gender-bending sexy ass looks.

It's honestly stunning how open these folks are with twisting fashion, but keeping it more in-line with traditional than "runway" if that makes sense.
