I just got the SR: Shooting Script that I pre-ordered months ago, and it's brilliant (I'm not done with it...I just got it 20 minutes ago). It explains SO much, it has more heart and just runs SO smoothly.

They should have kept it this way, with people complaining about plot holes and such, even if it surpassed 3 hours. But Singer and CO. were forced to cut it down to 2 1/2 hours, to fit the summer box office formula. Sometimes the rules can be broken. They should have kept it the way it was!

It starts of with homage to the Donner movies by beginning with the kid and the comic [<<I don't care too much for this comic part...but it's OK]. It has an introduction of Krypton's doom, by using the vintage footage, but it's all black and white, except for "the child's blue, red, and yellow garments." It shows the dialogue between Jor-El and Lara about Kal-El - being stronger, quicker, but isolated and alone. Then it goes into Jor-El's famous "he'll never be alone" speech. Krypton explodes as the ship flies off into outer space and then the screen goes black. William's theme reigns in.

Then, "Majestic titles fill the screen...many by Lois Lane: METEOR SHOWER BAFFLES SCIENTISTS

CAPED WONDER STUNS CITY

I SPENT THE NIGHT WITH SUPERMAN, SUPERMAN STOPS CRIMINAL MASTERMIND, LEX LUTHER

LEX GETS LIFE THANKS TO MAN OF STEEL: SWEARS REVENGE

[Here’s the good stuff]
ASTRONOMERS FIND KRYPTON INTACT -- SIGNS OF LIFE

SUPERMAN DISAPPEARS.

Then they describe how the world is besieged with "all manners of trouble": war, crime, famine. And that soon these headlines push Superman to the back pages, and after years he's faded from the public consciousness. One final header:

WILL HE EVER RETURN? [But it could also be: WHY THE WORLD DOESN'T NEED SUPERMAN]

And then we have a WONDERFUL Krypton scene...it's breathtaking to read and imagine how this would have been on the big screen. To cut this down kal-El reaches Krypton, but it's in pieces, and many of them are fast moving asteroids. The ship is huge because he is sleeping in a pod chamber that open up, and the consol is a completely different space than the pod chamber and he's able to stand and walk. We see reminisce of a once great civilization, and Kal-El sees, for the first time his family legacy and realizes their fate. He is astonished but the Planet is killing him. Hand shakes, can barely stand, and starts to sweat. And then the asteroids begin bombarding the ship, chipping at it, but the ship heals itself, but the hits keep coming harder and faster, Superman falls and is barley able to stand up, he is able to muster enough energy to crawl into the pod chamber, but not before punching in a command in the consol and uttering one word: home.

After that it cuts to the Kent Farm at night, Martha and Ben are just finishing a game of scrabble, there’s dialogue, they start to clean up, and then the house begins to shake and rustle. BEN sees the spaceship crash, and is about to call the police, but Martha interferes, and tells him it was just a meteorite that didn't completely disintegrate on it's entry to earth. She tells him that she'll see him tomorrow, but he is insisting that he stay and contact the sheriff. She finally coaxes him to leave but he knows something’s up...he just plain figures out. And reluctantly gets in his truck, but not before stating: "Martha Kent, I knew you'd be trouble."

She drives to the scene, it's pretty much the same as the movie, but when Clark collapses in Martha's hands he utters one word: Mom.

Cut to: Venderworth Mansion...This is where I stopped!

Thanks Supes4ever. Where did you get that? Can anyone order it?

 PLEASE BE IN THE EXTENDED CUT! OH PLEASE!

It would be nice to see Supes adventure to Krypton. I'd wanna see it in the film.

As much as I love the film, I could tell just by reading the novel that it was suppose to be at an epic length. You can feel the cuts at the beginning of the film. Once Clark gets to Metropolis, the cuts to the rest of the film are harder to find...almost non-existent.

But, in those beginning 21 minutes, you can "feel" that there was more. 4ever's post pretty much confirms that.

Wait, but if Singer were to re-insert the "Return to Krypton" sequence, wouldn't that mean that he would have to tweak the opening credits considering it depicts (through the various planets) Superman's Return to Earth from Krypton?

Actually, the return sequence IS in the script so that's not too much of a tweak. The bigger problem is Ben Hubbard's reinsertion. It's so obvious that he knows...

Martha: It's just a meteorite...[see previous post]

He looks at her skeptically. She checks her watch.

Martha (cont'd) Listen it's late. I had a nice dinner and...

Ben: But--

Martha: I'll see you tomorrow night, Ben. For Bingo.

Ben: Martha--

Martha (firm) Tomorrow. Bingo.

She looks at him, stonefaced. He takes another look outside -- and at her, and realizes what's happening. He sighs and shakes his head.

Ben: A meteorite?

She nods.

Ben (cont'd) Martha Kent, I knew you'd be trouble.

It makes more sense then the theatrical version. He lives next door how could he not have heard or seen the ship upon entry?

I think they should have went with the longer film.I loved it,but you could tell some parts were missing,or to me it seemed like it.

Oh no no, i'm not talking about the opening sequence, i'm talking about the actual opening credits ala music, cast credits, etc. which depicts in the backgroud Clark making his return trip back to Earth from Krypton.

The part where the ship is zipping through space and flashing by planets and solar systems. Cause that's in the script as well. But it's a little different though! :)

Actually I very much agree, you could tell some of the parts were cut out...that something was missing. Some of the dialogue is better cut in the movie. So, with some minor tweaking it could have been Citizen Kane epic!

The flash back sequence is WONDERFUL! Pretty much the same thing 15 year-old Clark running through and over the corn stalk however the heart of the scene was taken out. After Clark crashes through the barn, he floats above the ground, his glasses fall off him, he squints, and he realizes that he doesn't need them...this is KEY; this is why he wears glasses, he HAD TOO! Just like Jason needed an inhaler. Then Clarks vision changes he's not looking AT the ground, but THROUGH it.

X-ray POV: beneath the floorboards he sees a small cellar, and inside a small egg-shaped size crib, covered by a tarp.

4ever,

Actually that part is in the film. When he looks at the glasses, he does squint...It took me three times at the theatre before I finally caught it and figured out that he actually needed the glasses before his powers evolved in that moment.

Now, the rest of the scene is out...the X-ray vision through the floor part.

Oh yeah are you kidding me? I pre-ordered this sucker in March! :D

BTW, in total the book is 271 pages with story boards. The script is 136 pages...it's great!

dammit, this site and slickdeals.net is gonna put me right into bankruptcy. oh well, at least i'll have some good reading material when i'm living in my cardboard box. yipee!

i can't wait to read this suckah. and i hope and pray that the deleted scenes are added back into the dvd. if you guys haven't checked it out already, head to kal-el.org and check out the link they have regarding the dvd. seems very promising.

this could be a grand money-making strategy for them to make 2 different DVD versions.

Here is another version of my DVD art:

SupermanReturn5 from supermancinema boards spotted this. Do you believe it?

It could be a disgruntled employee or someone who has it in for Singer.

Bald Steve

Movies - So I spoke to a guy who worked on Superman Returns RE: DVD details and production.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DISCLAIMER #1: This comes from a guy whose name appears within the first 30-50 listed in the opening credits so I would think this stuff is legit. It is all heresay, though, so take what you will and leave the rest.

1. Wait before buying the DVD unless you just want a bare-bones edition with only a few deleted scenes and such. There's a extended edition coming which will include a pretty long sequence where Supes is piloting a Kryptonian spaceship (just like the crystal one he took to Earth) and actually finds a pretty large chunk of the planet. Here is where several more Brando scenes occur as well as other scenes with the actress who played Kal-El's mother (digitally recreated, obviously). Singer demanded all effects be finished so this stuff is already in the can. It will NOT be on the initial DVD release, though, as it is already complete.

2. That scene where Clark throws the baseball out to the horizon and the dog looks him like, "Yeah, right"? In a deleted scene set later that night over dinner the dog actually returns with the ball. Clark picks it up, spins it on the table and the spinning ball morphs into the Daily Planet Globe and serves as a pretty cool transition to Metropolis. I don't believe this will appear on the initial DVD release either.

3. The entire process slowed to a crawl towards the end because *ALLEGEDLY* Singer's partying had gotten rather "extreme" to say the least. He would apparently show up in the editing room still wrecked from the night before and be unable to function. According to my source he had "completely lost interest" in the whole endeavor about two months out from release due to his excessive partying and studio demands re: the film's running time.

That's it for now, but I'm rapping with this guy again later in the week so I'll pry and post as much as I can.

Damn, Singer wasted alot of money..
I was baffled when i heard they had cut the Krypton scene. They could have saved a lot money by not shooting it in the first place.

If true, this should make for a great SE Un-Cut version DVD!

And i feel bad for the guys who had to do the pre-vis, the models and CGI for those scenes.

I feel like Singer didn't plan it out as he should of with the budget.
