Bethesda Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster

I think Oblivion was a much bigger commercial success and that's why they went with it.
Ding, Ding Ding! Oblivion was on more consoles and hence was played more than Morrorwind. There are more gamers with nostalgia for it whom will be potential purchasers of this remaster today

Oh wow that trailer looked way better than the leaks. Just goes to show, sometimes you just have to be patient

It’s on Gamepass so I downloaded it yesterday and played through the dungeon escape, sought out Jauffre and explored an Ayleid ruin. All in all I’m really enjoying it. It’s not perfect but given that no other games have really held my interest after beating BG3 (which, to be fair is a very high bar), the fact that I’m already hooked on Oblivion says something. My early thoughts…

The graphics are obviously a HUGE step up from the original. The landscapes in particular look great. Some of the characters’ faces look a little creepy but it’s okay. Uriel in particular looks like a melting wax figure but he’s supposed to be 87 so I guess that’s why lol.

Obviously you have some great voice acting that was present in the original (Patrick Stewart, Sean Bean, Lynda Carter, Terrance Stamp). But apparently they also recorded new voice actors for a lot of the minor characters so you get less of that “one guy doing every other voice” thing you had before. I wish the dialogue choices were a bit better though; one or the things I like about Skyrim is how you can basically just be a wiseass with a lot of your responses. However, perhaps implementing that here would have been a ton more work so I can’t fault them too much.

The combat is… well, it’s a Bethesda game. Whoever said that it was going to feature Soulslike combat was full of ****. But whatever. It’s about the same as Skyrim except that blocking is better in Skyrim because you can shield bash. If you can do that here I haven’t figured out how yet.

Anyway, when it comes to Elder Scrolls, I’m generally not here for the combat; I’m here for the lore and the immersive world and so far it delivers on that. I guess that the easy part in a sense because that was what the original game did. At least I think so since I only played a little bit of it. But given that some of the story threads carried on into Skyrim (and even that crappy Blades mobile game, which I also played for a while for some reason), I feel like those aspects are pretty strong here. Looking forward to playing more.

LOL that is amazing. I’ve encountered a couple bugs so far (classic Bethesda!). One is where you join the legion to retake Kvatch. We cleared the courtyard but the commander and the other soldiers just stood there and kept saying we still had to clear it of enemies. Luckily I was able to just go inside the keep and kill all the rest of the enemies myself so the quest could continue.

Another funny one was when I took Martin back to meet Jauffre and he was casting a spell as my dialogue with Jauffre started, so while we’re were talking, you could see Martin off to the side freezeframed with his arms in the air. Never change, Bethesda!

It’s a lot of fun though. Finally got my Blade armor, which looks much cooler than a lot of the other sets I’ve come across. But why does a Dremora mace weigh 43 pounds?! LOL you better be doing some serious kettlebell work if you want to wield that ONE-HANDED weapon.

ok this remaster is so cool! Just hearing that theme again is so epic.

You know it’s funny but the time is so right for a game about a massive status quo change and how things will suck for a bit before they get better. Thank you bethesda

This gives me a reason to finally get back to this game. I played it in 2008 but never got around to finishing it for whatever reason. I think I only made it to the first gate.

I really hope the overwhelmingly positive response to this prompts Bethesda to remake Morrowind. Every Elder Scrolls diehard I know who has been a fan of the game pre-Skyrim swears by that game and says it’s the best. I’ve never actually played it (well, I tried once like a year ago but much like OG Oblvion, it looked way too dated to get into) but I would love to experience a modernized version of it. Especially after playing the Morrowind expansion in ESO, which was awesome. Naryu is my bae.

Yeah, if you like Elder Scrolls for the lore as you mentioned above, Morrowind is the peak. So much cool metaphysical stuff and neat ways that the religions and mythologies of the different cultures contradicted each other.

Oblivion started to get a little more vanilla, but the main quest still had a bunch of interesting stuff to it, Skyrim sadly jumped the shark when it comes to mythology. The Skyrim main question just ruined it.

Alduin is supposed to be the Norse version of Akatosh and the fans had a bunch of interesting ideas that the Amulet of Kings turned the malevolent Alduin into the benevolent Akatosh and its destruction is what unleashed him. The fact that Alduin just became a big dragon was extremely lame.

Calm down Morrowind fan. :o

I can see the criticisms and Alduin is a pretty weak villain overall but I still think a lot of the lore in Skyrim is pretty cool, especially the stuff with Miraak, the Dragon Priests, the Falmer and the Dwemer. Skyrim is one of those games where the best parts are the side quests and the DLC. Alduin’s story is pretty meh in comparison, though I do really love everything with Parthanaax and the Greybeards. I also really love the foreshadowing with the Thalmor, which hopefully will carry on into ES6, because they seem to have set them up to be the major villains in the next go around. Especially if you buy into that tower theory that some of the lore nerds have (potentially) uncovered.

Sorry, I should clarify that there was lot of good stuff in Skyrim, especially in the side quests, but what I was driving at is a lot of that lore no longer connects together consistently the way it used to. A lot of the best stuff about the Dwemer, the Greybeards, the Thalmor, etc. comes from Morrowind. And my issue is that the new lore from Skyrim diluted it.

Some careless lore issues in Skyrim, in particular, the main quest, undermines some of the better connective tissue in the lore that gave rise to things like the Tower theory. Like I said there was similarly some great theories from the lore nerds before Skyrim, but sadly none of them paid off. I hope that Bethesda pays more attention to having a satisfying main quest and making sure its lore has good depth.

Never played Oblivion before but having played Skyrim for countless hours, this felt very familiar in the beginning, like an old pair of comfy slippers with similar UI and symbols and such. It seems like a really nice update to an obviously older game but seems like they wanted to keep the charm of the original intact as well. Only just got out the sewers and have too many other games now to play but cant wait to dig into this world again at some point, will play like a Skyrim prequel for me.

Can’t post here because of language but check out the Oblivion bug compilations on YouTube. They will crack you the hell up. :funny:

Had some really funny bugs and jank at times but its only adding to the charm, really digging it so far and it looks amazing with really good atmosphere from the water and light effects. We stealth archers are so back....
