Elder Scrolls V - Part 2

Do you guys have any advice for a first time player to the Elder Scrolls franchise? I've only had time to play for a few hours and absolutely love the game, but I feel a little lost about what I should be doing aside from the main quest. There's so much to gather and I never know what's worthwhile to "harvest," etc. I'm assuming the plants and such can be used to make potions? I don't even know where to make them

Man, one thing that really bugs me is having to choose between a set of armour that has a high armour rating and is practical, over something that just looks freaking awesome.

I'm there with you about being lost on the alchemy thing. It used to be slightly more complicated in the last game, an now they have stations all over, mostly indoors though. You will recognize them by the little strangely shaped glass tubes and beakers on a pedestal (As seen in this article). As for mixing items, I've only guessed my way into making one potion while failing the rest. So, when you make a potion successfully the ingredients will be recorded in the alchemy menu so you can see what you need again to make it. When you fail at mixing it takes the items away from ur inventory, little harsh I know. I need to research ingedient combination off the web or find a book in the game if I'm every going to make something stronger than weak health potions.

But I'm really looking for a full on cheat sheet so I don't have to guess or eat my ingredients just to know their effects.

For making potions you just combine whatever ingredients you want to find what they make lol, there's a station for it in the Dragonreach castle, in Whiterun. From the entrance run up the stairs and take a right at the dining hall. There's a table for enchanting there too.

Anyways the best thing about these games is you can do whatever you want. I've been playing for like 25 hours and I haven't even talked to the greybeards. It can get a little overwhelming because quests start other quests, but it's all good coz the game waits for you. You can pretty much set a random waypoint on the map and start a journey there on foot, chances are you'll find a quest to do along the way hahah.

The whole point of The Elder Scrolls series is that you're able to go wherever you want, do what you want, and be who you want. So being a little bit lost is part of the fun! As for what you should be doing, there's really no right or wrong way to play the game. There's so much substantial side stuff for you to do, that you could completely ignore the main quest and not feel like you were missing out on anything. My advice would be not to stress over what you "should" be doing, and just do whatever you want or whatever you find most fun about the game.

Yes, you can use plants, as well as many other ingredients to create potions (and poisons). There are alchemy labs all over the place you can use to create them with. I know for certain there's one in the potion shop in Whiterun, and if you buy the house there, you can buy a lab of your own.

There are other crafting things you can get into as well like cooking, blacksmithing, and enchanting.

What sort of character are you playing, by the way?

alchemy perks allow you to learn what ingredients for potions are by eating them (learn 2) and picking them up (learn two). The max perk tells you all the ingredients. It actually isn't that complicated, it basically boils down to 4-5 types. It's primarily for a Rogue class though, although it can be helpful for mage builds.

Im not addicted to anything. Iv just recently moved to this place called Skyrim tho. I live there now. I fight dragons and trolls and what not, but I'm not addicted to anything.

I don't see a way to go wrong with either set of Dragon Armor... if you're a warrior anyway.

Eh, visually the dragon armour doesn't really do anything for me. Nightingale armour is way cooler. If I could have that armour as strong as dragon armour, then we're in business.

well.....in that case........DON'T DO IT!! This game is really addictive. Once you get sucked into the world, it's hard to break away......lol

Interesting, this (and everyone else's responses, too!) is a big help!

My character race is Breton (I usually gravitate towards elves so I thought I'd switch it up and only choose a race that was half-elf ) and I chose mage as my "sign blessing." I always lean towards magic in every other type of fantasy game I've played...the magic in Skyrim seems pretty cool so far.

SO I ran into a bit of a problem in my playthrough. Here's what happened (spoiler ahead)

I had just attended Kodlaks funeral and my next objective was to mee with the Circle in the Underforge to discuss the whole being a werwolf vs not being a werewolf and I accidentally exited the Underforge mid conversation. Now when I go back all the characters are standing there doing nothing. They won't talk, I can't talk to them and I can't proceed with my quest. They're just frozen. I'm pretty pissed. I'm almost done with the Companions quests and now it's frozen

Just a few more weeks and I'll be home and I can buy this game, and it will be the first Elder Scrolls game I've ever bought. I've been reading wiki pages to read up on the classes and figure out who I wanna be.

Redguards seem to have a nice balance of abilities that would suit my style.
