I'll give the same thoughts I gave in the other thread:
Skyrim Remaster is just...meh. I played Skyrim last night. It still looks pretty damn good. It looks better than most current generation games, in fact. And while the idea of being able to mod out spiders so I don't have to fast travel everywhere and live in constant fear is intriguing, mods alone do not have me overly eager to slap down 60 bucks and invest another 100 + hours exploring this world. I've been there, I've done that. Mods + a minimal graphical upgrade isn't sufficient. Unless it is including an expansion, I'm not all that sold.
Personally, I wish they were redoing Oblivion. Oblivion kinda got lost in the mix. It is lost between the otherwordly, first of its kind, innovation of Morrowind and the juggernaut that was Skyrim. But for my money (and I know I am in the minority here), Oblivion is the superior game to Skyrim. The stakes of Oblivion seem much higher, even Tolkien-esque (with the forces of hell invading the Empire). With Skyrim, there never seems to be that sense of urgency. Yeah, there are dragons floating around and we are told of what a huge threat they are...but in the end, they become routine enemies that you encounter and can kill with little difficulty (or even just kick back and let the guards kill). It makes it feel very meh.
Further, I personally prefer the traditional medieval landscape of Cyrodiil to the Norse inspired, snow covered Skyrim.
And, IMO, every guild questline is better in Oblivion. In Oblivion's thieves guild questline you do heists...Skyrim's is dungeon diving. In Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood questline you assassinate a buttload of characters in fun, stealthy ways (or just go all in on slaughtering them)...in Skyrim's you dungeon dive. Fighter's Guild makes you feel like a mercenary. Skyrim's equivalent has you dungeon diving in some overly convoluted werewolf subplot. Mage's Guild in Oblivion is learning spells, mastering the craft, and then taking on an ancient evil necromancer. Skyrim's is...you guessed it...dungeon diving. In addition, it feels like Bethesda got so caught up in the idea of endless radiant quests, that they turned every quest (including main quests and major guild quests) into run and fetch quests.
While I appreciate the more customizable nature of Skyrim and several features, I feel like Oblivion is a much deeper game. I'd much rather see Oblivion re-done, to include some of those features of Skyrim, with a proper HD upgrade, rather than revisitng Skyrim, which really won't change all that much.
Remastering Skyrim, this soon after its release, without much of a technical jump so as to justify a remastering feels like a cash grab (especially since X-Box One is probably going to make it backwards compatible soon enough and if the PS4 Neo rumors are to be believed, that system will have full backwards compatibility). Re-doing Oblivion, a decade after its release, giving console gamers access to mods and incorporating some of Skyrim's features...that seems like the type of endeavor that is worthy of Bethesda's reputation.
So yeah...maybe I'm cynical but this feels a helluva lot like a cash grab to me.
im curious as to how they are going to handle mod support...
wait??!! there's a rumor that PS4 Neo will have full backward compatibility??!!
Same way they do for Fallout
Same way they do for Fallout
Same way they do for Fallout
That's the rumor. Could be false. Either way, I stand by my point.
