Mystery/Thriller Elementary - CBS's Modern Take on Sherlock

After seeing the premiere.....I'll give it more time. I'm an unabashed Sherlock Holmes fanboy, but I've never minded changes as long as the spirit is retained. I find Sherlock having sex a bit irksome, and when he said, "Sometimes I hate it when I'm right!" I actually screamed at my TV, "********!". Other than that, I like Miller and Liu(and really like Aidan Quinn as kind of a US version of Lestrade), but often I really felt like this was just another version of Castle or The Mentalist with Sherlock's name on it. This show might eventually find it's footing. Parks and Rec had a bad first season.

I could see cumberbatch's Sherlock saying " I love it when I'm right" in the middle of a gruesome discovery
 
It wasn't GREAT but it was decent. You obviously can't beat the Brits at their own game but as I kept watching I found it enjoyable. I think Miller and Liu make a good pair and I really liked the theme that played out during the episode. Will give this a chance.
 
No one's talking about the second episode? I thought it was better than the first. Loved the talk oh how his mind is like an attic, which a lot of people know is classic Sherlock. Looking forward to the return of the show in 2 weeks.

Also, THAT THEME.
 
I've loved the show so far. I'm liking Lucy Liu as Watson, and I really like Miller in this. Hard to believe this is the same guy who got his big break costarring with Angelina Jolie in Hackers, and then married her!

I'll also say, after watching this, I'd love to see him, Paul Bettany, and Jude Law in something together.
 
I thought the second episode was much better than the pilot, which is common. While I still don't think that Liu and Miller have much chemistry, I think they played off of each other a bit a better. I think as long as they keep Watson as someone who doesn't put up with Holmes B.S. , I think the show will continue to work.

My issue with the first episode was that they made Lucy Liu far to passive imo, and given that Liu is known for playing kick ass take no prisoners take characters in the past , it seemed lackluster to have her so passive to Holmes insults and attitude. I also liked that this Holmes doesn't always get it right , and that things sometimes turn out a bit differently then he expects.
 
Im LOVING this series.

I have a love of "*******" characters I guess. Loved House and now I love Sherlock
 
This show isn't great or anything but its fun cause of the two leads.

The actress who played Donna was f***ing terrible. Its like she was reading off cue cards in background.
 
Miller and Liu really do play off eachother nicely and while the show isn't great in some regards, I'm still watching and enjoying it.
 
I think the problem with this show is having it about Sherlock Holmes. If it were about characters with different names, it might be easier to accept. There's nothing terribly Sherlock Holmes about it that other shows haven't had. In fact, it's actually more like Monk with a slightly unbalanced yet brilliant detective who is cared for by a nurse-like female figure while working with the local police captain.

I thought Vincent D'Onofrio in Criminal Intent was more like Sherlock Holmes to be honest.

My problem is I that the audience can see whats coming. At the end of this most recent episode, I knew immediately that...
Watson was going to find Sherlock because of the text message, and that the Captain already knew about Sherlock's drug abuse.

These things are really easy to figure out. A show about Sherlock I think should be a little smarter than the general audience. Instead it feels like a run of the mill CBS procedural.
 
This show isn't living up to its lead-in. Person of Interest is by far CBS's smartest and best written show.
 
Just not feeling it. Looks like a generic CBS mystery show

The team on "Sherlock" spent a year crafting 3 clever episodes
 
I'm liking this show. I think the best metaphor is that "Elementary" is good junk food while "Sherlock" is a meal at a fine restaurant. "Elementary" isn't great, but it scratches an itch for Sherlock.

Yeah, I think that it needs to have a few elements of Leverage where it back tracks and shows how he figured out certain things which are not obvious to the audience, and also showing him outwitting opponents.

It's not bad, but it does seem like a standard procedural and could easily have been about any two other characters. I think there also needs to be more about Holmes teaching Watson the skill of deductive reasoning and other observation skills. She's a little too passive at the moment. Also would like to see Holmes having these face-offs with the opponents like Det Goren did at the end of most Law and Order: Criminal Intent episodes where he would trick the killer into confessing or giving up someone else.

Also, Vincent D'Onforio was more likeable than Jonny Lee Miller. He was also eccentric, and did often breach people's personal space, but Miller's Holmes is just socially awkward and a bit too abrasive.
 
I like the leads of this show and they keep me watching. I think the show is getting better I liked how they showed how Sherlock figured things out in the latest episode. I think what this show adds which is different from any other Sherlock incarnate is the drug rehab cause it's almost certain he will relapse at some point.
 
Almost every iteration of Sherlock has him addicted to something, House had vicodin and old school Sherlock was opium I believe.
 
I said drug rehab and not drug use which dates back to the original author of the Sherlock Holmes book. I am saying unlike many of the Sherlock Holmes incarnations who have highlighted his drug use, the drugs have never took away from his brilliance and he continued in work rarely making a mistake. The drugs in this show nearly destroyed him and his brilliant mind.
 
So, I watched two episodes last night. "One Way To Get Off" and "The Long Fuse".

I don't know. I like Miller, and I think he's doing as good a job in carrying this as is possible. I think the saving grace is Quinn and Miller, actually. Miller and Liu, atleast in the two episodes I've seen, have zero chemistry. There's nothing there. That's the thing that bugs me most, because even other shows that have gone for the Holmes and Watson style partnership have managed to make it work because of the chemistry between the characters and actors. House and Wilson had it, Castle and Beckett have it. I think I'll track down the previous episodes to see if there's any spark whatsoever, because there was just none in what I've seen.

There's potential, too. I mean, if they could tweak some things here and there. If Sherlock was maybe a bit more arrogant, and more unapproachable. I'll watch more though, just to see if it gets any better.
 
So, finally watched the Pilot...it's alright. It kept me mostly entertained...but I may have been spoiled by the BBC version so not sure if i'll keep watching this one...
 
They really need to step up on plots.The cases are those you wouldn't need a consulant
on.They make It seem like the NYPD needs holmes to Investigate every crime.The show could really use their version of Moriarity.The cases seem a little mundane for Homes who has been called the greatest Detective in Fiction.
