Elon Musk Buys X (formerly Twitter): Just Use Bluesky, Threads, or Mastodon Instead

Daily Kos - Musk puts false 'state-affiliated' label on NPR's Twitter account because he's a big pouting baby
As Forbes points out, NPR doesn't meet Twitter's standards for such a designation. Twitter's Help Center defines the tag as "outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution."

Russian media site RT would meet that designation, for example. An assortment of dictatorship-controlled "news" sites do, with the defining factor being the ability of the state to control what gets reported and what doesn't.

NPR, on the other hand, was used by Twitter's Help Center as an example of a media outlet that wouldn't meet that definition. "State-financed media organizations with editorial independence, like the BBC in the UK or NPR in the US for example, are not defined as state-affiliated media for the purposes of this policy."

The Guardian - Twitter labels National Public Radio account as ‘state-affiliated media’
[Elon Musk's] Twitter on Tuesday evening labeled the account of National Public Radio (NPR) as US state-affiliated media, drawing fierce criticism from the news organization’s leadership.

Other publications with the label include Russian propaganda network RT and China’s Xinhua News Agency.

The change to NPR’s designation appears to be in violation of Twitter’s own original policy on how the social media platform determines which companies receive this label. “State-affiliated media is defined as outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution,” the policy reads.

Up until a few hours ago, Twitter explicitly listed NPR along with the BBC as exceptions to this categorization. The policy noted that while both organizations receive state financing – NPR derives less than 1% of its annual operating budget from government programs – they have editorial independence, according to screenshots posted by NPR reporter David Gura.

With Musk replacing the bird with the dog, how long until he renamed Twitter as something else…

Reuters - Special Report: Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
  • Private camera recordings, captured by cars, were shared in chat rooms: ex-workers
  • Circulated clips included one of child being hit by car: ex-employees
  • Tesla says recordings made by vehicle cameras ‘remain anonymous’
  • One video showed submersible vehicle from James Bond film, owned by Elon Musk
"Two ex-employees said they weren’t bothered by the sharing of images, saying that customers had given their consent or that people long ago had given up any reasonable expectation of keeping personal data private."

You have to wonder how much longer the husk of Twitter will go on at this point. Everything that people liked about it has been taken away and at best put behind a paywall if it still exists.

Musk has also banned interacting with the independent journalism platform Substack from the platform.

Putin, Xi and Modi are his current best mates. Kim can’t be far behind (if he signs a big Tesla contract). Having Twitter for free State propaganda will be thrown in as one of the perks.

Fun thread about how obvious the brain drain is hurting twitter. No one knows how to do it.

Turns out, no one there knows how to remove all the legacy verified accounts, and has to do it manually. lol
