Episode 16 - "Unexpected" - Discussion Thread 2/19/07

Seriously, why is Sylar killing all of these people with powers anyway. Have we found out his motives yet or is he just a sicko?

I think he may have an inferiority complex and he kills these people because having their powers makes him feel special.

I believe his motive was established in the "Six Months Ago" episode. Remember, Sylar explains to Mohinder's father that he felt inferior being the son of a watchmaker and always hoped that one day, someone would tell him he's adopted. When Dr. Suresh came to Sylar, he became happy because finally he felt important. After the tests were run, Suresh thought he was wrong and declared Sylar to be normal. This pissed Sylar off because his chance at being someone special was snatched away. So he killed his first victim to attain power and importance. Nowadays, he just wants more power.

Pretty much, an inferiority complex as Asgard says.

Great episode. Peter starting to gain control of his abilities, then eventually flying with Claude over his shoulders...Definitely awesome. I'm wondering just how long it's going to take Mohinder to figure out that he's been working with the man who killed his father...Nice to see Hana make her debut. And Stan Lee's guest appearance was a really good moment. Simone was one of the characters to be speculated of dying, but overall, it was indeed a surprise. Loeb needs to write more episodes. Next week may be even better. Looking forward to it.

I would assume Mohinder would pick up on things after the next person they visit dies.

since Peter now learned how to use his powers one after another. do u think he would eventually able to learn to use his powers at the same time?

like slow time and fly while throwing objects with telekinesis as he heals.

cause that would be awesome to see. esp in a versus fight against Sylar

Here's something unexpected.
I'm Matt Parkman's long lost brother.

wow u do look like him. just grow your facial hair a lil more and find a friend that looks like the FBI lady lol

I wonder if the writers wanna give him a relative...maybe if he goes to jail after this whole "Kidnap the Bennets" business...

I am guessing there's some form of psychosis involved. His whole motivation is to be "special". He's always wanted to be special that's why he was desperate to have a power when Papa Suresh approached him and he wigged out when they couldn't find anything special about him.

Now he probably can learn how to obtain a power without killing someone, but then he would just be one of 2 people who have those abilities. In his mind that's not good enough, he wants to be "special" so he eliminates the person whose power he just acquired.

Nice theory, but there's only one problem. Nothing so far has indicated that sylar knows peter's abilities. As far as sylar is concerned he IS unique in his ability to take other's powers. The killing thing is probably simply a plot device to make him more EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEvil

or it could be that he actually has to consume that portion of the brain to get the genetic code...

True, the did say his powers are based around understanding how things work and suresh has stated that the powers stem from the heroes brains so this would make sense

Suresh is going to know that Zane is actually Sylar, and might even end up finding away to supress his abilities, I think.

Sylar is getting really greedy though, he's gonna come up against somebody that is going to hand him his ass.

This is what I was thinking, that it was something beyond mere ritual. :)

What the **** does Peter's ability to absorb powers have to do with Sylar killing his victims to make his powers unique?

Well if you read the post quoted in mine you might understand what I was talking about :o

And the unique thing is bull**** anyway, I was simply disproving it..

nothing. i think HF thought "then he would just be one of 2 people who have those abilities" that the other person referred to Peter rather than the person who Sylar killed.

it's not complicated. Sylar is evil. he kills people to get to their abilities.

I dont know if anyone else is watching the episodes with commentary at NBC but they are usually pretty fun. If you watch the scene with Peter and Isaac having the confrontation, the dinosaur painting Hiro has is in the background...it was just a mistake. oops.:woot:

Also the actor who plays Sylar mentions he just visited the doctor who fits Isaac with his contacts. Make of that what you will.

I think that Sylar started with an inferiority complex, but then realized that many people weren't worthy of having those powers because they didn't know how to control them... He punish the unworthy, and that includes everyone
