The Penguin Episode 7: Top Hat (Spoiler Thread)

Did kid Oz mean to do what he did at the beginning of episode 7 or was it a reaction like when he killed Carmine’s son in episode 1. I want a psychiatrist’s opinion….. :woozy: :devilish:
Oz has shown throughout the entire show that he's prone to snapping and unleashing whatever internalised impulses he's wanted to lash out with when he either is being belittled or feels like he is.

Make of that what you will, considering how Oz might've taken his brothers forcing him into a situation that he's at a disadvantage for due to his leg

It’s like some of you (not YOU) haven’t seen any crime drama from 1984 thru 2000.

To be clear, I don't have a problem with most of the accents on the show, just the Cobb family, who all talk like Butch from the original Little Rascals.

Oof that opening. Oz you demented little sociopath:omg: .

Wasn’t loving the stuff with Sofia in the past two episodes but LOVED her realisation in this one. Time for her to kick some ass. Very excited for the finale.

That, uhhh, was quite Oedipedal there in the beginning, huh.

God, what a show. If Farrel and Milotti don't get Emmy noms, there is no justice.

I think we can put to rest the theories that Dr Simp isn't real. Kind of curious what role he will play in the finale. Beyond the obvious of turning Francis against Oz.

Loved Sofia's stuff. Realizing she turned into her father. And then the broader decision, to further evolve Gotham's crime environment. No more mobster rules, we playing by Arkham rules now. And that beginning shows Oz is going to be very capable of playing by those rules.

Which I think can play with some interesting themes in Batman 2. Where the villains a response to Batman, or was Batman a response to the super villains. The answer, they are in response to the city itself. No more in evidence then when the crew literally repainted the Arkham set to make the orphanage set. I just love that ****ing decision.

Anyway, I'm hopeful Sofia makes it. Ruling a crime gang, maybe not. I suspect Oz has a fate worse than death for her.

CAN we though? I'm still not convinced. Something is just...off with Theo Rossi's scenes and we ONLY see Sofia react to him. Even when we saw him "talk" to Oz's mom, she doesn't acknowledge his presence. I think the show is playing an elaborate mind trick on us, i dont think he's real and any piece of "information" he's given Sofia is stuff she's learnt on her own.

Theo Rossi being in her mind would be some next level hack storytelling. I’ve been a little critical of the shows scripts but that would beyond significantly beneath the show thus far.

I don't think there's really anything to suggest he's in her head, anyway. When she first arrived at Arkham, Dr. Ventris introduced Sophia to him. And there was nothing in her backstory to suggest she was delusional prior to going to Arkham. I really don't know why this theory even became a thing.

We are clearly shown Sofia's henchmen letting Rossi into the room, and also being in the room on guard during their conversation about the girl. Is Sofia also imagining them too?

I mean come on.

A big ass explosion in the middle of Gotham in broad daylight and a mob war going on simultaneously.

Battinson should've got his ass up 3 episodes ago.

Yeah, next episode has to either have an overt mention or appearance from Battinson. Bombs blowing up underneath the very areas of the city that Batman's likely trying to attend to is officially the moment this would get on his radar

All seriousness, the "he's in bed recovering" theory doesn't make much sense to me seeing as we literally see him, in the movie, two scenes after the flooding aftermath driving to the signal. He's not recovering, he's somewhere doing something. We just don't know what. The only way it really works is if the signal Batman was responding to was literally a result of the bombing we saw this episode and there's a week timeskip we don't know about right at the end of The Batman. Which isn't impossible, but didn't really seem like the initial intention.

That episode was top 3 either way. Last two have felt a little bit of a step down but the buildup it was providing in hindsight makes all the sense of the world. While the writing very much feels on the wall for Sofia, good God do I hope she's in more stuff from here. The idea of her and Selina (let alone her and Bruce) in the same room is too goddamn good to pass up, to me
The marketing materials for the series make clear that Batman is absent in universe. He hasn't been seen for weeks and hasn't responded to the Bat-Signal. There is a cartoon in that Gotham Gazette issue they did setting up the status quo in the series.

@Snow Queen very shrewdly has suggested that Bruce is out of town lobbying for aid for Gotham, like he did in the comics after No Man's Land. This goes hand in hand with the lessons the character learned in the first film about Gotham needing more than vengeance and Bella Real asking Bruce to get involved and do more for Gotham.

In line with Reeves' Cobain/rock star ideas of Bruce, the second film could examine the stress on Bruce of being suddenly thrown into the limelight by adopting the public philanthropist persona.

I suspected Francis wasn't gonna play damsel (even said in last topic), a hardened by life woman tough on her own, but immediately reading Sofia and putting her thoroughly in her place was amazing.

"What are you gonna do next? Dye your hair pink? That'll show daddy"

Ngl that burn was sickkkk :tearsofjoy:

All fair points. The only thing that gives me pause to it honestly is the very last scene of The Batman, which to me indicated that Batman would still be responding to the signal when needed. It's literally what he does in the final shot of the movie. So it's odd that he suddenly drops off the face of the Earth a week later, to me. Ultimately this isn't exactly a show breaking complaint, but I honestly do hope there's some mention or indication of his return as a response to the Crown Point bombing. I'll live with it if there isn't, but I will be very interested to see the explanation for why

True, I hear you, but I also see that scene being about him doing everything he can for Gotham, which going to Washington and other cities as Bruce Wayne to get relief and reinvestment would be completely consistent with. I could see there being a scene in the finale where Oz or someone is watching the local news (just like at the start of the series) and it recaps the devastation and one of the people whom a reporter asks for comment is Bruce Wayne who is coming off his plane at the airport having just returned to the city from lobbying efforts to respond to the new attack.
