The Penguin Episode 4: Cent'Anni (Spoiler Thread)

I have one question about this episode and it's more nitpicks than anything else... you mean to tell me Johnny Viti didn't realize his bedroom window was open when he went to sleep? :o
Don't you want to fall asleep with the beautiful air of Bristol?

Are we sure Sofia didn't come in and open it while he was already asleep?

Damn, you know a show must be good when the episode threads go beyond two pages on here. :o

She opened it when she walked into the bedroom where she was smoking before they all went to sleep.

Cristin Milioti is just electric. I need Sofia to be in the movies, I need her to get her own movies, I need her to get her own show. At this point, they can kill off the Penguin and just have her be the main character for all I care :o.

But my god that was a harrowing episode. **** you straight to hell Carmine Falcone :argh:.

Just read a great article on Indiewire about the inspiration for Sofia’s arc (Rosemary Kennedy). I had never heard that story before and what Joe Kennedy Sr. did to her is just as ****ed up as what Carmine did to Sofia (perhaps even more so). Big props to Lauren Lefranc for crafting such a compelling narrative. I like that Reeves kind of stepped out of the way and let her run this piece of his universe; she clearly had a great vision and I’m glad he recognized that.

Just amazing TV all around. This one might even top Daredevil as my favorite comic book-based TV series when all is said and done. I think it’s surpassed what was my #2 favorite, Sandman, (which is also amazing despite Neil Gaiman being scum).

i feel when this show is over, sofia and penguin are going to be the greatest live action batman villains we have so far.

that's the benefit of long form storytelling like this - you can flesh out their characters and motivations.

I love this show. Love them. But Heath's Joker was a damn movement.

Ohh, back in episode 2, Isabella Falcone's death was in 1994 - episode 4 reveals Sofia was 9 when this happened.

This makes Sofia then 27 when she got send to Arkham. 37 when released (and by the movie and the series timeline) and 39 now in 2024.

This means she is around 12-15 years older than her sister Selina, and around 7 older than Bruce.

Also The Waynes were killed on October 19, 2002, which means they probably watched one of the following movies :o

Roberto Benigni's Pinocchio
The VeggieTales Movie
Tuck Everlasting
Pokémon 4Ever
The Tuxedo
The Ring
Red Dragon

Also very weirdly, this basically puts Bruce's birthday as Late October-December as I believe Matt's already said Bruce was 10 years old when his parents were killed, when he was born in 1991.

This means absolutely nothing but shrug

Gotham is a fictional world, so why do people automatically assume that the Waynes were watching a real world movie? I prefer that they were watching a fictional live action Grey Ghost movie, based on a cartoon that Bruce loved to watch with his dad when he was a kid.

Thomas looks like a VeggieTales kind of guy.

Ledger's performance is not getting touched for a while.
I agree, but I am struck by one similarity between Ledger’s Joker and Farrell’s Penguin: it’s hard for me to fathom either of those guys performing those roles without the make-up on.

I can’t imagine Oz’s voice coming out of Farrell’s face and I can’t imagine Ledger doing his Joker mannerisms while looking anything like his regular self. There’s something really symbiotic that has/had happened between those two and their make-up that allowed the actor to disappear into character in a way that I don’t think you can say the same for any of the other actors to play Joker or the Penguin.

This is a really good point. It's also why the moment of the Joker without makeup at the parade hits like a shock to the system. Almost like a jumpscare.

I was hoping someone would shoot me after watching The Tuxedo.
