STAR WARS EPISODE VII PRODUCTION UPDATE
July 6, 2014

At the end of last year Lucasfilm and Disney invited all young aspiring actors to attend an open casting call for roles in J.J Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII. The casting calls spanned 11 cities across the US and UK and over 37,000 hopefuls attended, with a further 30,000 submitting applications online.

Having hunted high and low for young and undiscovered talent, the filmmakers are delighted to announce that two actors from the open call call have been cast.

Crystal Clarke is an American actress studying in Glasgow, UK, who has both stage and screen acting experience and is soon to be seen in her first feature, The Moon and the Sun (to be released in 2015). British actor Pip Andersen is a skilled practitioner of parkour, a discipline that involves propelling oneself through any given environment with incredible grace and agility. Pip recently demonstrated this remarkable skill in a Spider-Man ad for Sony.

“The Star Wars universe has always been about discovering and nurturing young talent and in casting Episode VII we wanted to remain absolutely faithful to this tradition. We are delighted that so many travelled to see us at the open casting calls and that we have been able to make Crystal and Pip a part of the film,” said producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Meanwhile, principal photography continues at Pinewood Studios in London after wrapping on location in Abu Dhabi in May.

In August, the team will take a brief two-week hiatus while adjustments to the current production schedule are made as actor Harrison Ford recovers from a leg injury. Harrison is doing well and is looking forward to returning to the set soon. Shooting remains on track to wrap in the fall with the film scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

The Hollywood Reporter - How 'Star Wars' Director J.J. Abrams Kept the Cast Secret

eKceHMS.jpg

It took nine months of meet-and-greets, script readings and screen tests, all conducted with more secrecy than a raid on the Death Star, for director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm and Disney to assemble the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII: John Boyega, 22; Adam Driver, 30; Domhnall Gleeson, 30; Oscar Isaac, 35; Daisy Ridley, 21; Andy Serkis, 50; and Max von Sydow, 85, who were unveiled April 29, will join original stars Mark Hamill, 62, Carrie Fisher, 57, and Harrison Ford, 71. Abrams cast a wide net, with actors asked to read material that was not from the top secret script. They couldn't tell anyone for which parts they were reading, and their agents and publicists had to sign strict nondisclosure agreements.

Although Abrams began meetings as early as August, sources say he didn't cast the British newcomer Ridley -- one of the first leads to be chosen -- until February. Securing Driver, who likely will play a villain, was more complicated. The actor also was sought for a role in Warner Bros.' Batman-Superman movie and had to work around his schedule on HBO's Girls. But by late February, he was on board.

What a great cast! Some I wasn't expecting at all, like Gleeson and Von Sydow, but I'm really happy with what we got. This is the start of some very exciting times.

Nevermind...taking it to the discussion thread.

Quick! Someone pinch me!! Did we just get official news? :shock

I'll be the first to admit i had to goggle some of those names, because i havent heard of them before, so i cant judge those cases since i havent seen any of their work. I look forward to seeing them in action :woot:

I'm extremely curious about Andy and Max's roles.

Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker are officially in! This is awesome! :)

Just as exciting to me is the fact John Williams is back!!!

I better not die before this is released...

Ming The Merciless, Moses and Bill Weasley ;)

I always thought Domhnall Gleeson like his father Brendan was underrated. Domhnall was good in Never Let Me Go, True Grit and Black Mirror.

John Boyega is like a young British Denzel.

Andy Serkis?! My god he is in everything.

Max von Sydow in the house! This is fantastic!

Andy Serkis?! My god he is in everything.

And virtually unrecognizable in every major role. I'm sure he'll be playing some CGI construct, but it'd be great if he actually got his mug in a high profile role.

Either way, he's an awesome addition. And the whole cast is filled with potential. I'm especially excited to see what they do with Oscar Isaac and John Boyega.

Anyone think we'll get cast roles during May the 4th? Or is that something you hold for a Comic-Con level event?

Loving that they got Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis and Max von Sydow. Still having trouble picturing Adam Driver in a Star Wars movie, but hoping for the best.

I'm just happy to see the original cast returning. I wish they had made this new trilogy instead of Prequels so we could've gotten them 10 years younger, but better late than never.

Anyone else think only 1 out 7 new cast members being female is eye-brow raising.

This is very far from the first version of Ardnt's script which supposedly had a female character as the lead. Now we have just one female character amongst 7 new cast members and it hardly seems like she will be the lead character.

Personal & family drama == Main main trilogy character

Looking Back at How Lucasfilm Revealed the Star Wars Episode I Cast

Jake Lloyd (Episode I) - not a Jedi yet, went on (Hayden Christensen) to become trilogy main character
Mark Hamill (Episode IV)- not a Jedi yet, went on to become trilogy main character
Daisy Ridley (Episode VII)- not a Jedi yet, will go on to become trilogy main character

Guessing.

We don't know she's not. Also, there was never any hard evidence that Ardnt's first script was female focused. Mostly all we ever got was a whole lotta internet rumors.

Bless us and splash us, precious Andy Serkis is in this?
