Escape from New York (Remake)

If you "HAD" to recast Plisskin...do you like the choice of Gerard Butler???

  • Yes I like him...not sure if he's my top choice but...I like it! :)

  • No he's not right for the role at all. :(

  • Not bad but...I'm not sure yet...need to give it more time.

Remakes are the way of the World now or at least the way of Hollywood....At first I was against this, but what the heck Im all for it now and I still hope its Gerard Butler in the lead role.

*I hated Escape from L.A.

Watching some of the film, I think they should have changed the score. It just felt like one big retread. Russel pretty much looked the same though.

Do you mean score as in originally written score or soundtrack as in bands, because I meant soundtrack. I honestly can't remember much of a traditional score.

I'll watch it unless they get one of them twilight boys to play snake. Then I'll pass.

I was bored to sleepiness while watching the original, so I don't mind the remake given they give a more exciting take on the concept.

Are you people nuts?

How can you say the score was not good?

John Carpenter and Alan Howarth did a cracking job on the score. Those cowbells are legendary.

Even Harold Faltermeyer used the EFNY score as a template for his Beverly Hills Cop 2 score.

I expect this remake to have the same crappy tuneless soundtracks that today's movies have.

Only a genius like John Carpenter could write, direct, and create the soundtrack for an entire movie.

Today's directors are shambolic and need a lesson in how to make movies.

Seeing as John Carpenter seems to be seeing off the rights to EVERYTHING he has ever done you know Big Trouble in little china will be remade.... sadly :(

A greed for money is pissing over my favourite films

He doesn't own the rights to BTILC though. Universal was developing a sequel way back in 2005 and Carpenter was asked about this. He said he couldn't stop it even if he wanted to, "I don't own it". His attitude towards the remakes was like this "I don't care. I get money from them and people will always remember my version as the superior anyway".

New Escape From New York Moving Forward

Source:Vulture
February 10, 2010

Vulture has new details about New Line Cinema's upcoming reboot of Escape From New York, which the site says is moving forward thanks to a well-received rewrite by Allan Loeb.

"Loeb nailed the humor in Plissken without slipping into camp, and he changed Snake's rescue-mission target from a president to a female senator, thereby upping the banter quotient," they say, adding, "But just as big a factor was economic: They found a much cheaper way to turn Manhattan into a giant prison."

You can read more on what we can expect here.

Escape from NY is one of my fav films. But for some reason I don't mind a remake as long as they apparently signed a contract to keep Snake "bad-ass" throughout.

I hope they do it right.

Whoa, whoa, bored watching Escape From New York??? I can't... comprehend this...

I'll take it a step futher and say that I down right disliked the flick. The boredom was the biggest problem but I also found it to be the bad kinda cheesy.

Hell, I say remake every JC film expect for The Thing and Halloween. (I'm well aware that they already remade the latter and are working on the former. And to be fair The Thing was already a remake in itself.)

But Snake... the eye patch... freaking Lee Van Cleef... Adrienne Barbeau's cleavage... "You're the NUMBER ONE!"

It's all so awesome!

I love the original Escape From New York. At the same time, I can understand today's youth(relatively speaking) being bored with it. It is no Road Warrior, if you get my drift. Unlike the former, EFNY doesn't have that "frenetic" energy that has made The Road Warrior, and other 80's films like The Terminator, First Blood, Robocop, and Highlander very fun to watch to this day.

I think you have to watch EFNY with the same approach as watching a 1970's futuristic film like Soilent Green, Logan's Run, and also Charles Bronson actioneers like The Mechanic and Death Wish. EFNY has more of that type of slow pacing.

I don't dislike it because I am 25 years old.

The Thing has a slow ass pace too and I loved it. The original Pelham One Two Three had that slow 70's pacing and I really liked it. Just watched Taxi Driver and it had slow ass pacing too but guess what? I really dug it quite a bit.

Highlander is a movie that has a good idea and starts out interestingly enough but it quickly goes down hill. I'm all for a remake.

Robocop isn't great because of it's fairly breezy pace. I loved it because of it's ridiculously awesome script and great performances. It is one part witty social satire, one part Superhero movie and another part Tragedy. It's a masterpeice that works on all levels. Never seen First Blood but The Terminator is a good flick.

That all being said I probably do somewhat have ADD when it comes to movies because of what Hollywood has shoved down my throat but I know a good movie when I see one. It's insulting to me and others who dislike a movie to imply that we only disliked the film because it wasn't as fast paced/ADD as Transfomers. A movie is a failure if it is boring but I also found the acting in Escape from New York to be pretty f**king lackluster, the characters are too as a matter of fact. And although the story is interesting the plot sure isn't.

So who to cast as Snake?

Apart of me is interested. I'd love to see what they could do with a bigger budget and modern technology to bring update the visuals, which done in the right way, could be amazing, but another part is the if it ain't broke don't fix it thing. There is stuff that can be expanded upon though.

With Breck Eisner directing, I can see Timothy Olyphant as Snake.

I like Olyphant, but I don't know if I could buy him as Snake. Though I'd take him over Gerard Butler.

Dont mind Eisner as director, havent seen The Crazies yet but hear good things, am actually quite interested in this re-make.

I've only seen his Sahara. Thought it was kind of mixed. Don't like Olyphant. People tell me he was great in Deadwood, but that mustv'e been a one time acting deal. Everything else is pretty...bad.

I think Olyphant is only good when he's in certain roles. In Justified, he's pretty good. And wasn't he good in Deadwood?

But he sucked as Hitman and as the villain in Die Hard 4. He's not as versatile as some may think he is, not to say he's not a good actor. I just don't think he has a swagger for a character like Snake. Strangely enough, he can pull of as a cowboy/southerner. haha.

Exclusive: Breck Eisner on Escape From New York

Source: Ryan Turek
June 23, 2010

Breck Eisner's The Crazies hits Blu-ray and DVD next Tuesday and ComingSoon.net got a chance to talk to the director about his next project, New Line/Warner Bros.' update of Escape From New York.

"I'm a huge fan. As a kid, I absolutely loved that movie. And Snake is such a bad-ass," Eisner told us. "The interesting thing about 'Escape from New York' is that it was a comment on the urban decay and the suburban flight coming out of the '70s and early '80s. Conceptually, it's an idea that's not true today because of the world we live in. So, how the prison is created is going to be different than in Carpenter's version. The anxiety of the world and anxiety of our existence post-9/11 is there, especially the anxiety in Manhattan post-9/11. Plot-wise, they're different, emotionally they're very similar. That's why it'll be interesting to tackle this movie, to have a slightly different take but with the same results which is Manhattan is turned into a walled prison."

Eisner added that more work on the script will be done. "I would be surprised if I found a script that I was just ready to make. I'm bringing on another writer this week and we will do a pass on the latest draft by Allan Loeb. We'll be doing a significant pass on that."

John Carpenter's 1981 film starred Kurt Russell. A follow-up, Escape from L.A., was released in 1996.

Eisner also talked about exiting the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake which you can read here and look for the full interview soon at ShockTillYouDrop.com!

For me it all comes down to who they get to play Snake.
