Escape from New York (Remake)

If you "HAD" to recast Plisskin...do you like the choice of Gerard Butler???

  • Yes I like him...not sure if he's my top choice but...I like it! :)

  • No he's not right for the role at all. :(

  • Not bad but...I'm not sure yet...need to give it more time.

That's an interesting take, as long as they don't Anakin Snake Plissken if you know what I mean. But with Gerald Butler wearing the eye-patch, I'm sure they're going to keep Plissken the badass he needs to be. I guess now we'll find out why everybody keeps thinking Snake is dead...

here's an interesting take on why everyone thinks he's dead from wikipedia...

Some time later, he turned to a life of crime, probably due to the perceived betrayal of the United States government during the "Leningrad Ruse". Snake took up with partners Harold Hellman (later known as "Brain") and Fresno Bob. In Kansas City around 1993, Hellman apparently let Plissken and Fresno Bob get cornered by police, at which time Fresno Bob was brutally tortured and killed by fascistic sadists within the United States Police Force.

Possibly as a result of the Kansas City incident, it was widely believed in the criminal community that Plissken was dead. This is a running gag in Escape from New York: "I heard you were dead."

and here's another interesting tidbit from wikipedia...

"Snake was arrested in 1997 after breaking into the U.S. Federal Reserve in Denver, Colorado. Following the heist, the story of his capture was filmed, although the footage was cut from the beginning of the movie. It can be seen on supplementary materials on the VHS and DVD editions of Escape from New York."

maybe they'll film this for the remake? i think it'd be cool to see how Snake gets captured...

Didn't see this part of the interview posted

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK more of a prequel than a remake? So says Carpenter to Suicide Girls!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Daniel Robert Epstein over at Suicidegirls.com has a fantastic interview with John Carpenter, going over much of his work. They talk a little about the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake and Carpenter drops this nugget:

I missed that part. However it is a remake. They're just going to expand the storyline and tell alot more of the backstory talked about in Wikpedia which to me is a good thing. A few of you talked about how that should be a mystery but clearly it's not...they just never filmed it. It was talked about throughout the films.

This'll be cool to see and all but still...remakes are stupid.

Why not just create something original and borrow elements you liked from past movies if you like one so much.

It's all just cashing in on brand name and nostalgia.

GG, FGTS, GG.

No. They're restarting the franchise not just one movie.

What's the point of ever making a movie anymore? SOmeone is just going to 'restart' it again later and basically rip it off, without doing something new.

Does it not bug you that people are remaking movies that really do not need it in any way?

Dawn of the Dead, Manchurian Candidate, Longest Yard, Flight of the Pheonix....all good remakes that didn't NEED to be remade...

...i asked this question before, if you are opposed to things that don't NEED to be done then shouldn't you be opposed to all movies since movies don't NEED to be made in the first place?

^ You see Dorky? LOL It's gets tiring after awhile. Why would it bug "anyone" that a movie is being made. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy a ticket.

Remakes are stupid? That's selfishly thinking. The population grows, new fans are born every day. Sure you can watch the old movie whenever you want but why not restart it if there's enough people that want to watch it. If you think remakes are stupid then you probably won't watch them. I enjoy them quite a bit when done right. Most of the time they aren't great because there was no potential from the start. This one has loads of potential. I'm done arguing with people about it.

Ughhhh.

The Longest Yard remake was a joke. It honestly to me was a slap in the face to the original. Dawn of the Dead was decent. Haven't seen the others though and probably never will.

Some films did need to be made however.....

But i agree that most films don't need to be, but surely the 'creative industry' should try to be just that? Longest yard??? Dawn of the dead? How are these improvements? Flight of the phoenix was very bland, it's just a aste of time and resources, and being exposed to all the crapy marketing and suchlike affects al movie goers.

But people saying "well just don't bother going to see it." But if people don't make a stand against the horrible situation it grows, like nazi germany, people are happy to be spoonfed crap, like GR, yeah, it was a popcorn flick, and they are fine with that, the movie going audience should demand more, because otherwise the overall quality descreses, which is what is happening at a ferocious rate, because the goldfish-esque members of the public don't care about movies, which stops decent things from being made, look at Terry Gilliam, due to hollywood etc, he is sometimes straped to make films, fair enough he is ecentric, but due to the swathe of crap that people go and see, it nearly stopped tideland from being made. Not to mention some of his projects that actually failed.

People selling themself short basically screws things up for everyone, so if you are a serious movie goer, then DEMAND MORE, or just don't bother and stick to TV.

and than look what happens when he does get films made...The Brothers Grimm :o

I'm actually a big fan of Gilliam, but that film was awful

That's what i mean, he made that movie so he could get funding for Tideland. That's what i mean about restricting the creativity to crap. Gilliam actually walked away from Brothers Grim for a while because it was basically being made by the producers.

But yeah, he was forced to make that piece of crap in order to make his tideland, fair trade, but it's disgusting that people can let this happen.

No. I'm simply opposed to remaking a movie because the movie going audience is too ****ing stupid and lazy to rent the movie from Blockbuster, Netflix, or actually buy a copy for themselves from places that sell movies.

Not counting last year where I saw 4 movies, the most I see in theaters is 2 movies. Instead, I go to Best Buy, Circuit City or other stores that sell movies and look for movies that I want to see that either came out before I was born, or was too young to appreciate.

If that makes me not part of the movie-going audience, then I'm proud of that.

^ You see Dorky? LOL It's gets tiring after awhile. Why would it bug "anyone" that a movie is being made. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy a ticket.

it DOES get tiring after a while but i never tell anyone to go away. i just don't get the mindset that just because a movie doesn't NEED to be made it shouldn't be made.

But i agree that most films don't need to be, but surely the 'creative industry' should try to be just that?

by no means am i saying that the film industry should create JUST remakes. besides, there are still plenty of original movies coming out. it's not as if remakes are the only kinds of films that are getting made now-a-days. i totally agree that there are films out there that shouldn't be f***ed with, but i don't think Escape from NY is one of them. it's not as if Escape from NY is that great of a movie right now. go back and watch it and there are so many things in that movie that are downright laughable because the standards for film making were much lower in 81. out of all the remakes that've been made or are about to be remade...i think this one is one of the most justified because there's a big fan base that loves the character of Plissken and the concept of him being thrown into an island prison, forced to save someone against his own will...yet the original is hard to watch because of the primitive effects, acting, and action along with the fact that we got a cheesy sequel.

so...no, this film doesn't NEED to be remade, but us Snake Plissken/island prison fans that aren't satisfied with what we have are aching to see more of Snake. it might not be new material but as i said....i'd rather see an EfNY remake than 'Escape from Earth' or 'Escape from (insert random city here)". like all remakes, the fans come out as winners either way......if it rocks then we get to see more of Snake, if it sucks we still have the original Escape.

People selling themself short basically screws things up for everyone, so if you are a serious movie goer, then DEMAND MORE, or just don't bother and stick to TV.
i dunno who you're directing that towards, but as far as i'm concerned...AD will tell ya, i don't go lightly on the Ghost Rider forums. i may want this movie to be made but only if it's good movie. i don't DEMAND, but i make it well known whether i like a movie or not.

TV has always been the producers medium, however more and more so it's becoming film, which is what movie fans need to stand against!

there haven't been any remakes for a good few years that i think were a good use of time, money or resources, we, as movie fans have the power to make a difference, and indifference to crap movie is ruining the business, so take a stand, make a difference!

"Movie fans: The Last Stand"

i'll agree with you that MOST remakes that have been made or are about to be remade shouldn't be but i really wanna see this one happen because i love Snake and the premise behind Escape from New York but it's hard for me to fully enjoy the original because of the lower standards of film making at the time.

as far as standing up to these tv producers trying to make big money by making movies instead...i wish i could, but i don't think they care about what the forums at superherohype.com have to say. even if they did, i wouldn't petition or stand against them making this remake.

Just to clear one thing up. I don't demand that anyone leaves here. It's more of a strong suggestion. I'm not going to get into that anymore anyways because I said I wouldn't. I'll just stick to my own advice and I won't go to threads on subjects I don't care about and moan, nor will I squat in threads about films I'm not looking forward to and counter attack every poster who IS looking forward to it. Once I make my point (on the negative side) I'll move on.

I would accept Mr Butler as an imperfect clone of Snake Plissken...that way they could play about with the character as they did Ripley in Alien R.

Just to clear one thing up.

Cyrus was talking about demand as in....we should DEMAND what we want out of movies. i wasn't talking about you suggesting people to leave....it's all good.

I would accept Mr Butler as an imperfect clone of Snake Plissken...that way they could play about with the character as they did Ripley in Alien R.
i guess that's a good way to look at it. if this movie's made, i'll watch it with the mindset that i'm watching the CHARACTER of Snake Plissken....not the Gerard Butler in Kurt Russell's role.

Well it is possible, just spread the word to people, help them boycott crap films basically, it does work, but the more people on board, the better, we need to stop things like date movie, and promote things like Brick!

Nice post.
My deal with the remakes is that they should only be made if they can truly benefit today. Movies like Masters of The Universe and Clash of the Titans are movies that can seriously benefit today. Escape from NY, IMO, is unnecessary as a remake. Remakes are good, sometimes, but make remakes of movies that need to remade by today's standards.

No. I'm simply opposed to remaking a movie because the movie going audience is too ****ing stupid and lazy to rent the movie from Blockbuster, Netflix, or actually buy a copy for themselves from places that sell movies.

No. Remakes should only be made if there's an audience for them and they're of the same quality or better than the original on one level or another. I don't expect Butler is going to be a better Snake but the story around him will surely be much better given they'll have the budget to make it right. The original couldn't film everything due to the budget that they wanted to so. So hopefully the fuller story, the bigger budget, today's film technology, etc...will give us an overall better picture than the original. Kurt will always be the original. He's not God though. If there's an audience then I'm all for them making a film. If it's not the kind of film I'm into...I'm not going to cry about it. I won't watch it. It's my choice. I'm happy for those who enjoyed it. You don't see me going to the Tremors or Leprechaun boards (if they exist LOL) saying they should stop making these movies. Why should they stop if there's a big enough audience to support it. Making a remake does NOT change the original film. It's still intact. Somebody making a remake or a film that's of no interest to you...does not effect you.
